LANGUAGE RESOURCES - TO EASE CULTURE SHOCK

06:14
Though English is widely spoken across Europe as a second or third language it is still a good idea to learn the basics of other languages. Especially if you will be traveling there in the future. Not only will it help you make friends abroad, but the locals will appreciate the effort to learn their native tongue. There are many more resources out there. These are just a few I have found. The Tipping Point - Language Learning for a Changed World

03:34
Presented by Carl Blyth, Noah Geisel, Felix Kronenberg, and Kevin Gaugler From 2013 ACTFL Convention & World Languages Expo This presentation will provide attendees with the knowledge and resources needed to create theme-based instructional units that are constructed around the Integrated Performance Assessment. The IPA is a prototype developed by ACTFL that places the Standards of Foreign Language Learning at the forefront of instructional planning and promotes a seamless interface between instruction and assessment. Thematic units are ideal for establishing a meaningful context, interweaving culture into the curriculum, and relating instruction to students' lives outside the classroom. The presenter will demonstrate how the IPA and the thematic unit can be combined to enrich language instruction. The presenter will share outlines of IPA-based thematic units and provide a template for attendees to use in their own instructional planning. It is commonplace to say that schools are broken. But according to Sugata Mitra, educational visionary, schools aren't broken. Rather, they are obsolete. This plenary begins with a radical assertion: our schools have reached the tipping point—they no longer meet the needs of the present generation who prefers to learn new kinds of content in new ways. In this plenary, four language educators share their stories of re-imagining their classrooms, their practices and their professional values in an age of profound social and technological change. Despite their differences, all four educators agree that a new design for language learning includes the following features: open educational resources (OER); adaptive, personalized curricula; collaborative learning communities; participatory culture; and integrative learning spaces.

Selection and use of resources

07:27
Consulting reference resources to help in lesson preparation How do we consult reference resources? Reference resources are all the sources of information about language and about teaching that we can refer to for help in lesson preparation. They include reference materials, such as dictionaries and grammar books, books and articles in teachers' magazines about language, supplementary materials in a coursebook such as phonemic charts or lists of irregular verbs, and websites on the internet. Reference resources may also include people, for example, the head of department or colleagues who teach foreign languages or other subjects. We consult reference resources by knowing where we can find the information we need and how to find it. There is a lot of information available to teachers and it is important, therefore, to develop the ability to compare reference resources and decide on their quality and usefulness . the info is taken from the book "The TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) Course Modules 1 2 and 3" by Mary Spratt , Alan Pulverness , Melanie Williams Let me remind you that every Monday and Thursday at 9:00 am (GMT +2) I upload here new videos! Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/teachingisfun2016/ Email - [email protected] My name is Tetyana Skrypkina. I am self-employed. I've been teaching for 12 years, 8 of them online. I have built my own business and I am proud of it! I believe that continuous professional development is very important, especially for teachers of foreign languages. Also, I teach English, German, Spanish, Ukrainian as foreign languages and survival Hungarian as well as survival Turkish. I have experience of learning German in Hamburg (Germany), Hungarian in Budapest (Hungary), and Turkish in the south of Turkey. I've got an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and Foreign Literature. Moreover, I did numerous courses in professional development and I am not going to stop! The ones I'm proud of are CELTA, TKT (Teaching Knowledge Test) Modules 1, 2, 3, “Action Research” (International House World Organization), “Research and Writing” (126 hours) – Arizona State University, Dyslexia and foreign language teaching, How to teach and learn a foreign language ( Instituto Cervantes de Varsovia)and others. Furthermore, I provide on-line and face-to-face courses, webinars, goup/tet-a-tet sessions for teacher of foreign languages. For more details, please, contact me at   [email protected]

2 Resources for Finding Cheap Foreign Language Books

02:06
Some people love learning languages through textbooks. I was both surprised and happy when I stumbled upon these two resources for finding language books and textbooks for cheaper prices. I wanted to share this with you all and I hope it helps! After speaking with my boyfriend, he told me that the Goodwill store in his area does not have a language section. I am not sure if this is specific to the Goodwill where I am currently at, or if his was an exception. Hopefully you all have a book section too! Investigating the role of digital language resources........

37:56
Investigating the role of digital language resources in the ecology of Australian Indigenous Languages LINK TO PRESENTATION SLIDES: cdu.edu.au/northern-institute/events/ppp-seminars Cathy Bow Research Associate & PhD Candidate Northern Institute Abstract There are many digital language resources available for the documentation, preservation and promotion of Australian Indigenous languages. Large amounts of money are spent on developing digital technologies for supporting endangered language work, yet little is done on evaluating these tools to identify if they deliver on the promise for which they were funded. The affordances of such resources will vary for different users, so it is important to elicit a range of perspectives, particularly those of the Indigenous owners of the languages. In this research Cathy aims to investigate the role of digital language resources in the ecology of Australian Indigenous languages, with a focus on two resources in which she has been involved in developing. The Living Archive of Aboriginal Languages is a digital collection of endangered literature in Indigenous languages of the Northern Territory, and the Digital Language Shell project is an online learning management system designed to enable Indigenous authorities to teach their language and culture to interested learners using digital tools. This research will explore the use and usefulness of these resources as they come to life in pedagogical and other contexts. The evaluation of these resources will identify some of the implicit assumptions of the different users about language and technologies, and how these can work more productively together. About Cathy Bow Cathy Bow is a linguist with research experience in both descriptive and applied linguistics. She has described the sound system of an African language, investigated language development in children with impaired hearing, explored endangered language documentation, and researched the language and communication needs of international medical graduates. Cathy has worked as a teacher of English as an Additional Language, and as a trainer and coach for language learners. She currently works as project manager for the Living Archive of Aboriginal Languages, and is currently completing her PhD in digital technologies and Aboriginal languages. Japanese Learning Resources #1: The Genki Books I & II!!

09:08
First up in the series of non-sponsored, genuine looks at the most popular ways of studying Japanese right now are the Genki books! These plus the Minna no Nihongo books (video out soon) make up a massive market share of the beginner side of studying Japanese. I've personally used these, heard the criticisms, the praises: but where do they really sit with a real world language learner? Here's my $0.02! Any questions on these books or any other methods of studying? Let me know what you want my thoughts on next! The Center for Open Educational Resources & Language Learning (COERLL) is one of 15 national foreign language resource centers funded by the US Department of Education (see map below). The overall mission of these federally-funded centers is to improve the teaching and learning of foreign languages by producing resources (materials and best practices) that can be profitably employed in a variety of settings. In more precise terms, COERLL's mission is to produce and disseminate Open Educational Resources (OERs) for the Internet public (e.g., online language courses, reference grammars, assessment tools, corpora, etc.). The term OER refers to any educational material offered freely for anyone to use, typically involving some permission to re-mix, improve, and redistribute. Thus, COERLL seeks to promote a culture of collaboration that lies at the heart of the Open Education movement. In addition, COERLL aims to reframe foreign language education in terms of bilingualism and/or multilingualism. As such, all COERLL resources strive to represent more accurately language development and performance along dialectal and proficiency continuua.

Salut! Welcome to my channel~ Should I watch this week's French film with subtitles or nah? Vote in the poll on Monday, February 11th, over on my Instagram page! (https://www.instagram.com/allisonmemmler/) Resources mentioned in this video: Coffee Break French podcast: https://radiolingua.com/coffeebreakfrench/ Drops App: https://languagedrops.com/ Language Hacking French book: https://www.amazon.com/Language-Hacking-French-Conversation-Beginners/dp/1473633095/ French For Dummies: https://www.amazon.com/French-All-One-Dummies-CD/dp/1118228154/ Pimsleur French: https://www.pimsleur.com/learn-french/ I've loved languages since I can remember. My childhood was filled with books about people around the world and I was fascinated by countries and cultures different from my own. I eagerly tried my hand at any language that crossed my path, and took various language courses as I got into highschool and university. My childhood dream has always remained the same: to become a polyglot with the ability to speak to people all across the globe. I'm taking the plunge and attempting to learn languages as intentionally as possible, with the goal of being (at the very least) able to hold a basic conversation with a native speaker of my target language. For this project, I'm going to start with French, a language I don't have a ton of experience with (as in one semester in middle school lolz) so I believe this is going to be an excellent opportunity for growth in my language-learning skills. Feel free to subscribe and stay updated on my weekly progress over on Instagram... better yet, why don't you join me in this language learning experiment?? Let's do this together! Water Resources

11:38
005 - Water Resources In this video Paul Andersen explains how water is unequally distributed around the globe through the hydrologic cycles. Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. Freshwater is divided between surface water and groundwater but must me stored and moved for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Subsidized low cost water has created a problem with water conservation but economic changes could help solve the problem. Do you speak another language?
