Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. Freshwater is divided between surface water and groundwater but must me stored and moved for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. When harmful toxins are present in water they are transferred to higher level organisms through the food chain. Heavy metals like lead, mercury, iron, cadmium, aluminum, and magnesium are present in water sources. If these metals are present in the sediment, these reach the food chain through plants and aquatic animals. This causes heavy metal poisoning in the water. Polluted water is a hot bed for diseases. Microbial water pollution can spread infectious diseases such as typhoid and cholera from drinking contaminated water. Water pollutants alter the overall chemistry of the water, causing changes in acidity, conductivity and temperature. These in turn have an effect on the marine life . Heavy rain carries up dirt and silt and deposit them into the water. If the dirt and silt settle in the water body, then these sediments prevent sunlight from reaching aquatic plants. If the sunlight can’t reach the plants, they perish. These sediments also clog up fish gills and suffocate organisms that live on the bottom of the body of the water. If oil is spilled on the water due to accidents, the effects on the ecosystem and the components are harmful. Many animals can get destroyed in case they swallow oil. Things we can do to reduce water pollution DO NOT pour fat from cooking or any other type of fat, oil, or grease down the sink. Keep a “fat jar” under the sink to collect the fat and discard in the solid waste when full. DO NOT dispose of household chemicals or cleaning agents down the sink or toilet. Avoid using the toilet as a wastebasket. Most tissues, wrappers, dust cloths, and other paper goods should be properly discarded in a wastebasket. DO NOT flush pills, liquid or powder medications or drugs down the toilet. Install a water efficient toilet. Run the dishwasher or clothes washer only when you have a full load. This conserves electricity and water. Use the minimum amount of detergent and/or bleach when you are washing clothes or dishes. Use only phosphate-free soaps and detergents. If you do your part to prevent pollution in your area, then you'll be helping to protect water for both yourself and everything else that relies upon this precious resource. Minimize the use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers. DO NOT dispose of these chemicals, motor oil, or other automotive fluids into the sanitary sewer or storm sewer systems. Towards Integrated Water Management: Data Strategies
Integrated Watershed Management September 15, 2011 This webinar will present the key requirements and data management issues for integrated-management of water resources and quality, a practical technology that can implement it, and what makes this new approach cost effective and more efficient than conventional strategies. The California Water Quality Monitoring Council has brought together state water quality control boards, municipal MS4 permittees, county health agencies, non-profit conservation organizations and others to improve the coordination and cost-effectiveness of water quality and ecosystem monitoring and assessment, enhance the integration of monitoring data across departments and agencies, and increase public accessibility to monitoring data and assessment information. While progress has been made towards these goals, there remain inherent hurdles in the integration of information and policies that stem from the conventional management approach applied to an integrated resource, water. Case studies to be explored include: 1) San Diego Regional Water Quality Portal-- San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board www.swrcb.ca.gov/rwqcb9/water_issues/programs/swamp/index.shtml 2) The Watershed Monitoring Programs- Los Angeles and San Gabriel Rivers Watershed Council 3) San Diego River Watershed Data Portal RiverWatch Data-- San Diego River Parkway Foundation, SDRWQCB, and San Diego River Conservancy http://www.ecolayers.biz/sdrpf-riverwatch/ Clay Clifton- Mr. Clifton has 15 years experience in environmental health and water qualty gained from working with the County of San Diego, Department of Environmental Health (DEH) and San Diego Coastkeeper. At the Department of Environmental Health, Clay led the Ocean Water Monitoring Program for a decade, and raised the program efficiency and effectiveness by managing data and integrating monitoring strategies with five dischargers, and coordinating reporting, investigation and notification with various stakeholders. Clay currently works with EcoLayers, Incorporated. Joe Purohit- Developing innovative solutions for complex industry problems has been the hallmark of Joe's career. In the eighties, at General Electric he pioneered the use of first-generation microprocessors, sensors and wireless communications for "smart grid" power utility applications. At AT&T he worked on digital voice/video applications and technologies, which evolved into the modern internet. In the early nineties, at Amoco he helped develop markets for fiber optic and next-generation solar power technologies (thin film). From 1994 to 1999, based in Moscow and London, Joe was country manager for BP-Amoco's electric power business in Russia, Eastern Europe and India. In Russia, he won Amoco's participation in the largest ($900 million) private sector power project. It became an exemplar for the restructuring of Russia's national electric power sector. Joe Purohit is the Founder & CEO of EcoLayers, Inc.
