Slope stability analysis is performed to assess the safe design of a human-made or natural slopes (e.g. embankments, road cuts, open-pit mining, excavations, landfills etc.) and the equilibrium conditions. Slope stability is the resistance of inclined surface to failure by sliding or collapsing. The main objectives of slope stability analysis are finding endangered areas, investigation of potential failure mechanisms, determination of the slope sensitivity to different triggering mechanisms, designing of optimal slopes with regard to safety, reliability and economics, designing possible remedial measures, e.g. barriers and stabilization. Successful design of the slope requires geological information and site characteristics, e.g. properties of soil/rock mass, slope geometry, groundwater conditions, alternation of materials by faulting, joint or discontinuity systems, movements and tension in joints, earthquake activity etc. The presence of water has a detrimental effect on slope stability. Water pressure acting in the pore spaces, fractures or other discontinuities in the materials that make up the pit slope will reduce the strength of those materials. Choice of correct analysis technique depends on both site conditions and the potential mode of failure, with careful consideration being given to the varying strengths, weaknesses and limitations inherent in each methodology. Before the computer age stability analysis was performed graphically or by using a hand-held calculator. Today engineers have a lot of possibilities to use analysis software, ranges from simple limit equilibrium techniques through to computational limit analysis approaches (e.g. Finite element limit analysis, Discontinuity layout optimization) to complex and sophisticated numerical solutions (finite-/distinct-element codes). The engineer must fully understand limitations of each technique. For example, limit equilibrium is most commonly used and simple solution method, but it can become inadequate if the slope fails by complex mechanisms (e.g. internal deformation and brittle fracture, progressive creep, liquefaction of weaker soil layers, etc.). In these cases more sophisticated numerical modelling techniques should be utilised. Also, even for very simple slopes, the results obtained with typical limit equilibrium methods currently in use (Bishop, Spencer, etc.) may differ considerably. In addition, the use of the risk assessment concept is increasing today. Risk assessment is concerned with both the consequence of slope failure and the probability of failure (both require an understanding of the failure mechanism). Within the last decade (2003) Slope Stability Radar has been developed to remotely scan a rock slope to monitor the spatial deformation of the face. Small movements of a rough wall can be detected with sub-millimeter accuracy by using interferometry techniques.

When you perform a linear regression, what you're implicitly assuming is that there is some reason that the data are linearly related. The goal of a regression analysis is to identify the true slope and the true intercept (which you never get to know in real life). If you performed an experiment 100 times and collected 100 different data sets, and then calculated the 95% confidence intervals for the slope and the intercept, on average 95 of your confidence intervals would have contained the true values of the slope and the intercept. However, you never get to know which of your 5 confidence intervals did not contain the true values. This screencast presents some simulations to show how that might play out in real life. The slope is concrete lined about 900 feet. All mines in the region become flooded at some depth. This mine was in operation from the early 1900's to the late 1950's before ceasing operations. Multiple headers branch off every sixty feet from the main slope. A parallel slope was converted for pumping water out of the lower portions of the mine when it was in operation. This mine operated for around ten years before closing down. The mine site resides on private property and access is tightly controlled by property owners.

When this mine was in full operation it went to depths of over 2500 feet and over 7000 feet in distance. A virtual city existed underground with hundreds of miners employed in this mine. This particular mine was in operation for over 70 years before being closed permanently.

The twin slopes were concrete lined for hundreds of feet going deep underground with connecting passage ways to traverse each slope. The remaining sections of the mine are flooded after about 900 feet down. An incredible engineering feat of that time period. Both slopes have different type gauge rails. Not sure why. A rare find to see this type of mine. The dates of when the mine was modernized with concrete lining most likely was from 1910-1920.

Exploring the Dixon-Slope Mine Ruins in Dayton, Tennessee

The Laurel-Snow Pocket Wilderness Area, a gorgeous yet lonely state park on the outside of Dayton, Tennessee, is a location rife with ruins from an old coal mine which are peppered throughout the wilderness like old and dank catacombs. In 1882, the Dayton Coal and Iron Company opened up a mine in this area, which covers a few hundred acres which surrounded the Richland and Morgan Creek gorges on the Walden Ridge side of the mountain. Within this area are the Richard, Nelson, and Dixon-Slope mines, which were all owned by the Dayton Coal and Iron Company. The mines were essential in mining coal to help create a fuel called coke, which was the key ingredient in making iron. The mountainside is covered in coal dust and even chunks of rock, making the trail appear black and charred at times--a testament to how plentiful that coal was in the area. The mine was mostly used during the late 1880s and 90s and as many as 450 men had worked there. The Richland Creek and Morgan Creek gorges were connected by the railroad with trains that hauled coal from the mines to the coke ovens. The finished product would be sent away to town to an old foundry that would create pig iron, which is the base for many iron products. The mines in this wilderness would not last too long, however. Accidents such as the 1895 explosion at the Nelson Mine, strikes, and low market prices were the catalyst for the Dayton Coal and Iron Company's downfall, which finally came in the 1920s. The mines were shut down for good and the foundry used in creating pig iron was demolished. The mines were then abandoned, leaving behind the haunting and eerie ruins of the Dayton Coal and Iron Company amidst a gorgeous backdrop.

Exploring the underground remains of an early 1900's red ore slope mine with the ore cart rails still in place. The lower portions of the mine lay under water while the original entrance was sealed long ago. More than several branches/headers lead off of the slope and stretch for hundreds of feet in either direction. Very well preserved after over 100 years.

The Laurel-Snow Pocket Wilderness Area, a gorgeous yet lonely state park on the outside of Dayton, Tennessee, is a location rife with ruins from an old coal mine which are peppered throughout the wilderness like old and dank catacombs. In 1882, the Dayton Coal and Iron Company opened up a mine in this area, which covers a few hundred acres which surrounded the Richland and Morgan Creek gorges on the Walden Ridge side of the mountain. Within this area are the Richard, Nelson, and Dixon-Slope mines, which were all owned by the Dayton Coal and Iron Company. The mines were essential in mining coal to help create a fuel called coke, which was the key ingredient in making iron. The mountainside is covered in coal dust and even chunks of rock, making the trail appear black and charred at times--a testament to how plentiful that coal was in the area. The mine was mostly used during the late 1880s and 90s and as many as 450 men had worked there. The Richland Creek and Morgan Creek gorges were connected by the railroad with trains that hauled coal from the mines to the coke ovens. The finished product would be sent away to town to an old foundry that would create pig iron, which is the base for many iron products. The mines in this wilderness would not last too long, however. Accidents such as the 1895 explosion at the Nelson Mine, strikes, and low market prices were the catalyst for the Dayton Coal and Iron Company's downfall, which finally came in the 1920s. The mines were shut down for good and the foundry used in creating pig iron was demolished. The mines were then abandoned, leaving behind the haunting and eerie ruins of the Dayton Coal and Iron Company amidst a gorgeous backdrop.
