HTL Capital: Making Big Data and AI work in investment management
Already 20 years ago Thanh-Long Huynh, CEO of HTL Capital, set up quantitative investment strategies for SocGen. Created in 2011, HTL Capital was specialized in traditional quantitative investment strategies before turning into an innovative asset manager based on Big Data Analytics. For this purpose, Thanh-Long created QuantCube Technology in 2013, an AI FinTech start-up specialized in macroeconomic and financial predictions based on alternative data. QuantCube recently closed a Series A funding round from Moody’s Corporation, Five Capital, the investment fund sponsored by CDC International Capital (Caisse des Dépôts Group) and Kingdom Holding Company from Saudi Arabia. Through Big Data analytics, QuantCube Technology can make highly accurate predictions of numerous future events in real-time, including the outcome of political elections, economic growth figures, price variation of commodities and fluctuation of stock markets. For instance, QuantCube accurately predicted the outcome of the Brexit vote and also (on November 3rd, 2016) a Trump win analyzing data from social networks. Clients include Central Bank of France and European Space Agency. For most cash equity applications, QuantCube has an exclusive relationship with HTL Capital whose AlphaNow Long Short Equity Fund is based on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data analytics. In this Opalesque.TV BACKSTAGE video, Thanh-Long Huynh and his team discuss: - HTL Capital's AlphaNow Long Short Equity Fund: Does it make money? - What are the new data sources and what are their advantages? - How is HTL Capital different from a traditional quantitative trading firm? - Investment philosophy: How to turn Big Data into an Alpha Portfolio of investment strategies? - What is Artificial Intelligence? - Applications and challenges in Natural Language Processing - Big Data and Compliance in investment management. Thanh-Long Huynh started his career in implementing quantitative investment strategies at Société Générale in New York in 1998. Thanh-Long graduated with MS Statistics from National School of Statistics in France, MS Financial Mathematics from the University of Chicago as a Fulbright scholar, MS Wealth Management from ESCP-Europe, CFA charterholder. He was a special lecturer at Sorbonne University in Risk Management from 2007 to 2013.

13. Investment Banking - Front Office vs Middle Office vs Back Office
In this video, we discuss Investment Banking Front office vs Middle Office vs Back Office. Investment Banking Front Office In investment banking, front office essentially means those roles that interact directly with the clients. For example, sales and trading analysts have to interact with their clients on a daily basis. Investment bankers are in touch with their clients for pitching ideas. Likewise, equity analyst interacts with the client and advise them on BUY/SELL on stocks. Investment Banking Middle Office Investment Banking middle office roles include their interaction with the front office staff and ensures they comply with the rules and risks set by the team. Roles in risk management, process, and controls, strategy all come under Investment Banking Middle office. Investment Banking Back Office Investment Banking back office does all kind of reconciliation work after the trading. Also, the technology team also comes under the back office. Leda Braga: Data science and its role in investment strategy
The CEO of Systematica Investments discusses how her company employs technology to achieve returns. As the first financial services industry speaker at the Women in Data Science (WiDS) conference, keynote presenter Leda Braga, CEO of Systematica Investments, introduced attendees to the role of data science applied to investment. Braga’s company manages large pools of assets from pension funds to insurance company premiums, to sovereign wealth funds of various countries. As a hedge fund manager, the company focuses on two areas of investment management – signal generation and portfolio construction. Signal generation is the process of trying to predict what assets should be bought or sold. Portfolio construction is the process of organizing investments strategically to meet investment objectives and achieve returns. Portfolio construction is essentially a constrained optimization problem, Braga notes, and as a result, it is an area where data science can help illuminate the best solutions. At Systematica Investments, the company uses data and algorithms to determine how to maximize financial returns given a number of variables with specific constraints within financial markets and environments. At the end of the day, she says, the business of investment management is the business of information management. Braga believes a passion for data science coupled with an interest in making a difference matters in the field of strategic investing. Worldwide, professionally managed assets are valued at $80 trillion. “If you want to change the world,” she says, “bank your money in the right places. And if you think about investment management as this activity whereby the pools of capital of the world get directed, that is so powerful. And if that is going to become completely data driven over time, you can’t miss that opportunity. You’ve got to join in and have a say.”

PIP18 - Breakout 5C: Social responsibility in the technology sector: what is the role of investors?
The emergence of new business models in the tech sector has brought about new challenges to the rights of both workers and end-users. The lack of pre-existing rules and legal frameworks regulating the operations of these companies has also meant that they have had to self-define the breadth and depth of their corporate social responsibility mandate. Often, these companies envision their main mission as serving society either by connecting people or by offering life-changing services but they have often proven to be lacking the necessary oversight to anticipate the adverse impact that their activities might have on the medium to long-term. Given the lack of regulations around tech companies’ activities, how can investors step in to promote more socially responsible behaviour from the tech sector? Pooja Daftary, Investment Officer, MFS Investment Management Will Lana, Partner and Investment Manager, Trillium Asset Management Melanie Nakagawa, Head of Climate Initiative, Princeville Global Mariela Vargova, Senior VP, Senior Sustainability Analyst, Rockerfeller Asset Management Moderated by Michael Connor, Executive Director, Open Mic

How FinTech is Shaping the Future of Banking | Henri Arslanian | TEDxWanChai
While FinTech is revolutionizing the banking industry and giving millions of people access to financial services for the first time, new banking models are emerging with FinTech start-ups and tech firms potentially disrupting the status quo. But business schools and universities are not preparing future bankers for these changes, says FinTech thought leader Henri Arslanian. How can designers, programmers and creative thinkers help? Henri Arslanian started his career as a financial markets and funds lawyer in Canada and Hong Kong, after which he spent many years with UBS Investment Bank in Hong Kong. In recent years, he has been teaching graduate courses on Entrepreneurship in Finance at Hong Kong University as an Adjunct Associate Professor, and currently leads the first FinTech course in Asia. His latest book on Entrepreneurship in Finance will be published in late 2016 by Palgrave Macmillan. A member of the Milken Institute’s Young Leaders Circle, Henri is a regular keynote speaker globally on the topic of FinTech and hedge funds and currently sits on a number of finance, academic, civil society and FinTech related boards and advisory boards. Henri is fluent in English, French, Armenian, Spanish and conversational in Mandarin Chinese and has been awarded many academic and industry awards over the years, including the Governor General of Canada Gold Medal for Academic Excellence. PANEL - The Disruptors in Investment Management - Alternative Data and AI
BERYL ELITES KNOWLEDGE CENTER The Disruptors in Investment Management: technology solution providers and emerging AI/Alt data centric hedge funds discuss current trends. ❖ Evan Schnidman Ph.D. - Prattle Analytics ❖ David Itzkovits - Sanlam Global Investment Solutions ❖ Thársis Souza - Yewno ❖ Barry Star - Wall Street Horizon - David Itzkovits "The truth is AI only has value if it can improve the investment outcomes for clients. Whether that's on predictive side or on the risk management side or hopefully a combination of both. AI can enhance significantly the analytical power, research capability, it amplifies it by magnitudes. But the real AI is the one that is continuously learning and adaptive. The challenge is that a lot of algos today are fixed rule-based algorithms. AI is not the silver bullet, far from it. All it can do is maybe give you a little bit of a predictive edge. Any AI capability that you see out there that says we get things right seventy, eighty, ninety percent of the time it is hogwash, it doesn't happen. One of the biggest mistakes that I have seen in other AI capabilities is that they focus on one piece of value chain which is getting the prediction correct but they do not focus on the risk management side. So when markets are going down and if you get that piece right with the AI that could be a big winner." - Thársis Souza "You can extract an infinite amount of dimensions of knowledge from earnings calls by analyzing data in a solid form as well as by analyzing data in conjunction with other data sets. Then you can extract knowledge and this knowledge is what I think is alternative data today. From technology provider perspective we observe two key pain points. The first one is information overload as large firms have access to more information channels. And second, since most data are structured, how can we transform structures data into actionable scores so you can build them into your models. The AI systems should be able to learn by themselves and then evolve with time as opposed to have a rule-based system. We work a lot in the index space for instance and if you look at desired characteristics of a given product in that space it is a rule-based strategy. So how can you develop the AI driven strategy that is really evolving over time without having rules but at the same time have a rule-based system. So that's the tradeoff and that's the paradox. The point is how to deploy AI systems with transparency is one of the big challenges that we face today." - Barry Star "In my business we do incremental edge on data. Big box terminals distribute really good data and our clients make money arbitrating the difference between pretty good data and really good data. And the same is true, if you have an AI based model that can give you a couple of points, that's all you need. We do not use technology to replace people, we use technology to augment people. We have a whole bunch of analysts to collect data and we still also have a half million lines of proprietary code. The code is there not to replace data analysts but to make their jobs better."
