Mongolia's Mining Boom (2012)
The Big Dig: Mongolia is the new frontier in a massive, break-neck speed resources rush. But as it races to take advantage of Chinese demand, helped along by Rio Tinto, what is it getting from digging up the steppes? Australian miner Rio Tinto is about to open one of the biggest copper mines on the planet in Mongolia, which will soon account for more than 30% of the country's entire GDP. "Some of the optimistic geologists we have say that this business could run for up to 100 years", Cameron McRae from Rio Tinto explains. But the company only cedes the Mongolian government a 34% stake, provoking worries about where the benefits of Mongolia's resource wealth will go. There's concerns the government is ill-equipped to strike complex mining deals in the national interest. "The deal is a financial transaction and whether it's really beneficial to Mongolia, I have many doubts about that", argues Dorjdari from the Responsible Mining Initiative. Environmentalists also worry that the mining push has come so fast and so aggressively that proper checks and balances are not in place. "Most tourists come to Mongolia because they want to see that pristine open space blue sky, but what if we couldn't offer it anymore?" Rio Tinto, Spain (Red River)
The Río Tinto (red river) is a river in southwestern Spain that originates in the Sierra Morena mountains of Andalusia. It flows generally south-southwest, reaching the Gulf of Cádiz at Huelva. This unearthly, reddish river in southwestern Spain is unlike any you've ever seen before. The water gets its coloration from iron dissolved in the water, and is notable for being extremely acidic. This may not sound like a suitable place to find life, but living in the bizarre waters of Rio Tinto are extremophile aerobic microorganisms that feed on the iron and sulphide minerals plentiful in the river. Since ancient times, a site along the river has been mined for copper, silver, gold, and other minerals. In approximately 3,000 BC, Iberians and Tartessians began mining the site, followed by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Visigoths, and Moors. After a period of abandonment, the mines were rediscovered in 1556 and the Spanish government began operating them once again in 1724. As a possible result of the mining, Río Tinto is notable for being very acidic (pH 2) and its deep reddish hue is due to iron dissolved in the water. Acid mine drainage from the mines leads to severe environmental problems due to the heavy metal concentrations in the river. In 1873, Rio Tinto Company was formed to operate the mines; by the end of the 20th century it had become one of the world's largest multinational mining companies, although it no longer controls the Rio Tinto mines; these are now owned by EMED Mining plc. Scientists now believe that these conditions could be the perfect analogue to what happens when liquid water flows on other planets or moons, such as on Mars or perhaps on Jupiter's moon, Europa. If life can survive under these conditions here on Earth, then it's possible that it also has survived elsewhere, making Rio Tinto an important case study into astrobiology. In fact, data retrieved from NASA's Opportunity rover has shown that similar conditions to those at Rio Tinto have existed on Mars in the past. Australian mining matters because it's part of modern life. Gulkula Mining Company Pty Ltd - owned by the Gumatj - mines bauxite from the Dhupuma Plateau Bauxite Mine on the Gove Peninsula, 30km south of Nhulunbuy in the Northern Territory. The bauxite - used for aluminium production - is sold to Rio Tinto’s Gove operation where it is processed and shipped to customers.

Vote Rio Tinto for Greenwash Gold 2012
Vote Rio Tinto for Greenwash Gold: http://www.greenwashgold.org/index.php/rio-tinto The metal for the 2012 Olympics medals is being provided by Rio Tinto, a massive British mining company. Metal for the medals will come from the company's Kennecott Bingham Canyon mine in Utah, USA, and its Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia. Groups in Utah are protesting about air pollution from Rio Tinto's Bingham Canyon operations, which contributes to hundreds of premature deaths each year in the Salt Lake City area. Planned expansion would make the situation worse. The Oyu Tolgoi mine will use enormous quantities of water in a desert region, and campaigners there accuse the company of poor planning and failure to share information with the public. But these are not the only concerns about Rio Tinto. The company's Ranger Uranium Mine in Australia is routinely spilling radioactive water into the surrounding area and is opposed by Aboriginal communities. Rio Tinto has been accused of association with human rights abuses around its now-closed Kelian Gold Mine in Indonesia and the Grasberg copper and gold mine in West Papua. In Bougainville, in the Pacific, the company hopes to reopen a copper mine which caused such catastrophic pollution that local people closed it down. Vicious repression of anti-mine protesters by the Government of Papua New Guinea sparked a war. In the USA, Rio Tinto is accused of violation of Indigenous treaty rights in Michigan, a legacy of pollution in Wisconsin, and planning destructive projects in Alaska and Arizona. And it has a history of appalling labour relations. Rio Tinto is bad news for many communities around the world. Its operations have failed to provide adequate protection of public health, the environment, workers and human rights. It is a scandal that it should be providing the metal for the London Olympic medals. Vote Rio Tinto for Greenwash Gold 2012! Rio Tinto shelves iron ore project in Guinea
Global mining giant Rio Tinto has reportedly shelved a 20 billion dollar iron ore project in Guinea, following a sustained slump in the price of the metal. The miner had been seeking financing for the Simandou project, even after a one-point-one billion-dollar write-down in February. Last month Rio Tinto submitted a feasibility study to the Guinean government. But global oversupply of iron ore that has depressed prices has made the project not viable. Simandou would have comprised an iron ore mine in central Guinea, a railway and a deep-water port on the West African country's Atlantic Coast. At full production, the project would have generated about 7-point-5 billion dollars in revenue.

15,300 abandoned mines in QLD - Tax payers problem
big mining companies, like Rio Tinto, are cutting corners when it comes to the closing down of their hazardous mines. As a result of this, Queensland now has some 15,300 registered abandoned mines, sitting there. Which will now be the Queensland taxpayers responsibility to clean up, due to coal and mining companies finding ways to avoid and delay their land rehabilitation responsibilities.
