North Korea's economic failures

04:34
Both Koreas started out or more or less equal grounds. Both the countries were devastated, the South had a larger workforce but the North had more natural resources and industries. And for the first couple decades the North Korean economy actually performed better than the South Korean economy. So what changed all this? And why did North Korea become such a poor country? Most people will tell you that North Korea is poor because the sanctions are working. Or that it has to do with the fact that the country is communist. In this report we take a closer look at the history of North Korea's economy. ---- Follow us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/CaspianReport Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/caspianreport

South Korea's miraculous economic development

10:00
South Korea's miraculous economic development "one of the biggest mysteries of the modern world." It was no mystery to the Koreans. "Park Chung Hee" The miracle worker of the Korea. South Koreans refer to this growth as the Miracle on the Han River. Korea's infrastructure was destroyed by the Korean War (1950-53) and millions lived in poverty at the time, with thousands of unemployed people struggling to fulfill basic needs. When General Park Chung-hee seized power in 1961, South Korea had per capita income of less than $100 per year. During that time, South Korea was mostly dependent on foreign aid. President Park Chung-hee's "Saemaeul (New village) movement" focused on developing rural Korea. It is considered by many Koreans as a symbol of national pride and "can-do" spirit. Besides the Saemaeul movement, the Korean government carried out another effective economic development plan called the Five-Year Plan. There were more than 5 plans created, and they were designed to revive the economy. Each of the plans contributed tremendously in industrialization and enlarging the marketplaces of South Korea. The strong leadership of the Park government and the effective use of cheap labor started a spark in the South Korean economy. Having almost no natural resources and always suffering from overpopulation in its small territory, which deterred continued population growth and the formation of a large internal consumer market, South Korea adapted an export-oriented economic strategy to fuel its economy. In less than four decades, this "hopeless" city was completely transformed into a world leading global city, a centre of business and commerce in Asia and a highly developed world city and economic hub, having among the most advanced technological infrastructure in the world. In 2010,GDP per capita of $30,000 and South Korea seventh largest exporter and tenth largest importer in the world. Now days South Korea is a high-income developed country and has a market economy which ranks 15th in the world.

What Does North Korea Trade With The World?

03:01
The US slapped North Korea with new sanctions on September 26th. These sanctions follow an executive order and two United Nations sanctions packages. The sanctions attempt to put economic pressure on Kim Jong Un to end his regime's nuclear ambitions. So who is North Korea trading with? Well, mainly China. $2.3 billion of $2.83 billion total exports were shipped to China in 2015, according to the Observatory of Economic Complexity. That's 83% of all of North Korea's exports. Besides China, export partners include Pakistan, India and Burkina Faso. Coal briquettes were North Korea's largest export in 2015 (a briquette is a compressed brick of coal dust). They were followed by knit and non-knit clothing. North Korea also exported silver, wood products, and processed fish. Following the UN sanctions, China agreed to halt some trade. Imports of textiles from North Korea were banned, and exports of petroleum products were limited. Other import partners include India, Russia, Mexico, and Thailand. The UN and US sanctions follow multiple nuclear tests in North Korea. President Trump has said that military options are also on the table. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI Video on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1oS68Zs Follow BI on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1W9Lk0n Read more: http://www.businessinsider.com/ -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider is the fastest growing business news site in the US. Developing countries look to South Korea as a role model

02:16
산림 관리의 모범 대한민국, 개발도상국에게 지속 가능한 산림 관리 기술을 전수하다 The natural beauty of South Korea's forest-coated mountains are the result of decades of careful management and reforestation programs. Experts from developing nations are in Korea to learn how the country looks after its forest resources. Kim Da-mi reports. South Korea is one of only four countries with a successful history of forest rehabilitation following World War II. In order to learn from Korea's successful reforestation, foreign experts and researchers have gathered in Seoul for workshops and field trips. Korea's reforestation efforts date back to 1950s, when the government introduced the National Forest Plans and fast-growing trees were planted to prevent floods and erosion. In the early 1960s, about 56% of the country was covered by forest, today 64% is covered -- an increase of 840,000 hectares. Nowadays, the focus has shifted from tree-planting to sustainability. Korea's current Sustainable Forest Management policy focuses on balance between forest utilization and preservation, and aims at increasing the amount of natural recreational parks and forests. Not only are forests and recreational parks places for citizens to relax and enjoy nature, but they also create green job opportunities such as forest guides, tree surgeons, and researchers specializing in tree care. "The kind of experience Korea has in terms of forestry and overall development, just to give you a simple example, the first time I'm seeing a forest hospital. I haven't even heard about it. All the advancements that happened scientifically and technically has a lot to offer to developing countries...", "The kind of challenges you had in the 70s and 80s we have some of those now... It's useful thing to come here, coming to somebody who's been there before. I'm particularly interested in how your fire management techniques can be applied back at home, especially wild fire management." Korea's extensive experience in reforestation and sustainable forest management will now help developing countries restore, protect and utilize their own forests. KIM Da-mi, Arirang News. How South Korea is getting even with Japan

47:04
South Korea is getting even with Japan on the business table. South Korea will pass Japan in per capital income within next 5 years (in both PPP & nominal rate) and its GDP economy has potential to become greater than Japan once unification happen between North and South Korea due to $5 trillion natural resources and millions young work force in North Korea. Also there will be increase in business traffic between China and Russia by roads and rails which will reduce shipping cost & delivery time over Japanese products. Currently South Koreans have 60 days visa free in Russia and limited visa free in China with Free trade agreement which Japan has none of these due to historical aggression against their neighbors. Oil and gas can be purchased cheaper from Russia due to new pipeline over North Korea. While Korean products can be transported to China and Europe over rails thru Russia, Japan will still have to transport their products over ships and airplanes which will lose competitiveness in delivery cost and time over Korean products. There are more economic and military reasons why Japan need Korea than Korea need Japan in the future.

Countries That Might Not Survive The Next 30 Years

11:54
At risk countries that might not survive the next 30 years! These are the world's most endangered nations facing potential economic, social, political, and environmental disasters! From the diminishing of Belgian domestic relations to the toxic environmental hazards in China, today we look at Countries That Might Not Survive The Next 30 Years. #9 North Korea Though they continue to claim successful self-reliance, experts believe the resources of North Korea will be depleted over the course of the next two decades. But fluctuating tensions between North and South Korea, as well as between North Korea and the United States, over the past 2 years have teased hints of their entering the modern world and leaving their self-imposed isolation. Talks between the Koreas began earlier this year with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un making many agreements to strengthen relations with their southern neighbors. Among them is their recent pledge to denuclearize, but many believe these statements to simply be progressive on the surface with North Korea adding the requirements of a vague contingency regarding partial denuclearization by the United States. Thus the future of the Koreas, while somewhat hopeful publicly, remains to be seen. #8 Belgium Though united by borders, the people of Belgium are inherently split between the northern region of Flanders and the southern region known as Wallonia. Mostly inhabited by French-speaking peoples, the residents of Wallonia differ greatly from the Flemish people of Flanders. At the center of the two is a region characterized by the countries capital, Brussels, and serves as a multicultural center of the nation. It was established through the Belgian government in the 1980s, following mass divisions over linguistic and class differences, that the Dutch-speaking community, the French-speaking community, and region-specific bodies would all have individual governments within Belgium. As time went on, the responsibilities and jurisdiction of these individual governments grew, and the regions of the nation continued to drift further apart. And with that distance grew the differences between Wallonia and Flanders as cultural and political hostility became a focal point of debate rather than linguistics. Some experts say it is only a matter of time until the two regions seek total independence from each other.

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea is very rich in natural resources - which the imperialists always wanted to get a hand on, but in the socialist North Korea the minerals belongs to the people. In this video we can see coal mining. In North Korea there is a coal reserve worth US$9.7 trillion (info by Wikipedia). Video, courtesy: uriminzokkiri.

North Korea 70th Anniversary Military Parade 2018 (FULL)

02:14:04
NORTH Korea has staged a huge military parade WITHOUT ballistic missiles - as the regime marks its 70th anniversary today. Kim Jong-un seemingly decided to tone down the display after his professed commitment to denuclearisation following his summit with Donald Trump. Instead nearly half of the parade was devoted to civilian efforts to build the domestic economy, emphasising the leader's new strategy of putting economic development front and centre. Kim attended the morning parade but did not address the assembled crowd, which included the head of the Chinese parliament and high-level delegations from countries that have friendly ties with the North. Senior statesman Kim Yong Nam, the head of North Korea's parliament, set the relatively softer tone for the event with an opening speech that emphasised the economic goals of the regime, not its nuclear might. After a truncated parade featuring tanks, fewer than the usual number of missiles and lots of goose-stepping units from all branches of the military, along with some students and others, the focus switched to civilian groups, ranging from nurses to construction workers, many with colourful floats beside them. Although North Korea stages military parades almost every year, and held one just before the Olympics began in South Korea in February this year, Sunday's parade came at a particularly sensitive time. Kim's effort to ease tensions with President Trump have stalled since their June summit in Singapore. Both sides are now insisting on a different starting point - Washington wants Kim to commit to denuclearisation first, but Pyongyang wants its security guaranteed and a peace agreement formally ending the Korean War. With tensions once again on the rise, a parade featuring the very missiles that so unnerved Trump last year, and led to a dangerous volley of insults from both leaders, could be seen as a deliberate provocation. The North displayed its latest missilery in the February parade, however, and Washington hardly batted an eye. Soon after the Sunday celebrations end, Kim will once again meet in Pyongyang with South Korean President Moon Jae-in to discuss ways to break the impasse over his nuclear weapons. The "new line" of putting economic development first has been Kim's top priority this year. He claims to have perfected his nuclear arsenal enough to deter US aggression and devote his resources to raising the nation's standard of living. South Korea's Seismic Observatories Will Be First to Detect N. Korean Nuclear Test [Arirang News]

02:08
Click "CC" for Scripts Subscribe to arirang! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=arirangnews There has been growing speculation over the past few weeks that North Korea is considering a third nuclear test. If Pyongyang does go ahead with the test, how will the rest of us be able to tell? Our Kim Han-ul explains. On May 25th 2009, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, a South Korean public research institution, detected a tremor from an earthquake in North Korea measuring 5-point-4 on the Richter scale. As it turned out, it was an artificial earthquake caused by North Korea's second nuclear test in Pungye-ri. But scientists weren't surprised that the test was detected in this way. In 2006, a collaborative effort between seismological observatories from South Korea, China and Russia helped detect Pyongyang's first nuclear test. Now, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources is currently operating in emergency mode on the heels of reports that a third nuclear test by North Korea is imminent."When unusual movements are detected from the North, we are the first to detect them and we pass the information on to the relevant organizations." The underground explosion caused by a nuclear test can be detected through seismic arrays, sonic rays and even through tiny amounts of nuclear material caught in the air. But nuclear experts say the fastest and the most accurate way to tell whether a nuclear test has been conducted... is by measuring seismic activity. And South Korea has a web of domestic and international observatories that can come up with the most accurate analysis of this kind of activity. "We have seven seismic and sonic ray observatories near the 38th parallel and we also analyze data collected from China and Russia. So we are able to conclude that an underground explosion in North Korea was from a nuclear test." A nuclear test can be detected by a seismic array just minutes after it is finished,.... while detection through sonic rays can take up to an hour. We visit Florence, home of the Renaissance, where dealers have found a lucrative market for North Korean artworks made in a government-run studio and see how calculated cultivations of goodwill have afforded the regime crafty avenues to generate cash. 06:57
INTRODUCTION: The United Nations Security Council has produced dozens of resolutions, including imposing trade and economic sanctions, but North Korea hasn’t budged even an inch. As United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un hurl threats at each other, it is not impossible to expect that the prolonged crisis on the Korean Peninsula will trigger a military conflict or war. This scenario brings in focus the state and competencies of the North Korean army and the overall capacity of the country to wage a war. North Korean military on paper seem an impressive force but is the reality so? In this video, Defense Updates analyzes the capabilities of North Korean military and provides 5 reasons why it wont last even few weeks in a war with U.S? Lets get started. OBSOLETE NAVAL FLEET North Korean navy has about 810 vessels, which in theory could seem a threat but in practice is no more than nuisance. While their quantity is great, their quality isn't as they represent decades old engineering and design concepts. North Korean navy is considered a brown water navy and operates mainly within the 50 km exclusion zone. It has no aircraft carrier or destroyer and has only 3 frigates, which are no match to the advanced U.S surface combatants. Large percent of fleet is made up of small patrol vessels. North Korean military is in possession of a fleet of about 70 submarines, comprised of approximately 20 Romeo class submarines (1,800 tons), 40 Sang-O class submarines (300 tons) and 10 Yono class submarines (130 tons). All of these submarines uses diesel-electric propulsion and were designed in the 50's or 60's. LIMPING AIRFORCE On paper the North Korean Airforce possesses more than 500 combat capable aircrafts, but almost all of them are 3rd generation and 4th generation once. The MiG-29 is the K P A F's most modern fighter and North Korea operates approximately only 40 of these. The whole air fleet also has loads of maintenance issues as they are at the last leg of their service life and are grounded lot of the times. Combat availability of the airforce may be less than 50%. The air-to-air missiles equipping fighters are also far older in technology compared to what U.S possesses. F 22 & F 35 are a generation ahead of Mig 29, and are stealthy. In this scenario, the North Korean pilots will find it very difficult to detect and target them. U.S with far sophisticated fighters, coupled with way better pilot training and strategy, is expected to quickly get air superiority over North Korean skies. ILL EQUIPPED ARMY North Korea has more than 1.2 million active soldiers, and a further 7.7 million in reserve, making its ground force one of the largest in the world. Its troops are bolstered by 200,000 special ops soldiers. But the troops are mostly ill equipped with outdated weapons of Soviet era. The country’s conventional forces, facing a long slide after the end of the Cold War, have faced equipment obsolescence and supply shortages. LIMITED RESOURCES Sustaining a war effort requires massive reserves not only in men, but also in material. Napoleon is known to have said “an army marches on its stomach”. Not only will the relatively poor inventory of ammunition will dwindle down in few weeks but also will the food supply. With these two basic items in short supply, the North Korean forces will not be able to continue fighting for long periods. It is also foreseen by many experts that as the war turns against North Korea, many will start deserting the repressive regime, hastening the process of capitulation. ALLIES North Korea is cut off from the world and basically has almost no allies. China has traditionally been North Korea’s closest ally, but has condemned the latest ICBM test as "unacceptable”. North Korea has historically enjoyed strong links with China, its neighbor to the north and the west. But since Kim took power in 2011, the relationship has cooled. Beijing has repeatedly asked Pyongyang to cease its nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches in vain. Russia has also played it safe in the Korean front. CONCLUSION North Korea invests a huge proportion of its meager economy into its military, and its ambitious missile, nuclear and cyber programs have caused widespread international alarm. Pyongyang spent nearly a quarter of its GDP on the military over the past decade, according to US government estimates. Being isolated from rest of the world, it has failed to acquire modern technologies and as discussed in the video, its armed forces remain technologically handicapped. Strategically, North Korea doesn’t have the required technology, resources or allies to wage a war for more than few days, especially against the most powerful nation in the worlds
