Why Some Countries Are Poor and Others Rich

08:48
The reason why some countries are rich and others poor depends on many things, including the quality of their institutions, the culture they have, the natural resources they find and what latitude they're on. Why Isn't Congo as Rich as Saudi Arabia? Massive Tax Evasion

04:38
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is rich in natural resources, yet the average citizen lives on only 72 cents a day. The foreign mining companies are getting rich while the general population is living in poverty. Many Congolese citizens are diging through the dirt on their hands and knees in search their fair share of the countries natural minerals. While there are taxes on the mining companies who benefit from the countries resources it is proving difficult to actually collect the money that is owed. Vocativ spoke to one tax inspector who explained that tax evasion and government fraud is rampant throughout the mining industry. So it seems that until those benefiting from the countries natural wealth start paying their fare share, many average citizens will have to continue digging through the mud to get by. How to Make a Country Rich

If you were setting out to make a country rich, what kind of mindsets and ideas would be most likely to achieve your goals? Rather than ask this of any specific country, let’s imagine designing a country from scratch. How could you make it as rich as possible? Suppose the brief was to design ‘Richland’: an ideal wealth-creating society. What would be the chief characteristics you’d need to build into this society? Congo, My Precious. The Curse of the coltan mines in Congo

52:01
Watch more https://rtd.rt.com/tags/illegal-mining/ The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa is one of the world’s most resource-rich countries. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty. Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations. For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse. By mid-century there will likely be 9 billion people on the planet, consuming ever more resources and leading ever more technologically complex lives. What will our cities be like? How will we eat in the future of Earth? Will global warming trigger catastrophic changes, or will we be able to engineer our way out of the world climate crisis? In the future world demographic changes will certainly be dramatic. Top 10 Countries With The LARGEST Gold Reserves!

10:12
Check out these 10 countries with the largest gold reserves in the world! This top 10 list features some of the richest and wealthiest countries on earth that have tons of gold bars stacked up somewhere! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "SURPRISING And Interesting Facts About Money!" video here: https://youtu.be/ONpChSPqVc4 Watch our "Most AMAZING Discoveries With A Metal Detector!" video here: https://youtu.be/45JveYKafVo Watch our "Most EXPENSIVE Diamonds In The World!" video here: https://youtu.be/RcZATf3Lmb0 10.) India According to the World Gold Council, the Bank of India currently holds 557.7 tons of gold. It is one of the largest stores of gold in the world! This makes up 9.9 % of the country’s total foreign reserve. Foreign exchange reserves is money or other assets held by a nation’s central bank so they can back the national currency. India, home to 1.25 billion people, is the number one largest consumer of the precious metal. Furthermore, India is one of the most reliable drivers of global demand. For example, India’s festival and wedding season, which runs from October to December, has historically been a major market for gold. And probably, one of the most interesting facts about India and gold is that India rarely invests much in gold. This is because as a country, India operates under the belief that buying gold leads to a deficit. And their belief must be proving right as things also seem to be improving for India. For instance, if you look at the last few years, India has increased its gold reserves from 557.74 to 557.77. While this might not seem like a lot, India is also at its highest point in history! In addition to what the country holds, Indian households which are considered the world’s largest hoarders of gold, hold a record 23,000-24,000 tons, which is worth about $800 billion. 9.) Netherlands In the past few years, the Netherlands has held 52% of its foreign reserve in gold. The Netherlands has a reported 612.45 tons. In 2016 it was reported that the bank was looking for a place to store all its gold because they were going to renovate the vaults and needed to moving it. The Dutch central bank is planning to move the country’s gold reserves from the center of Amsterdam to a new complex called the Cash Center. Like most countries, Dutch gold is also held in banks around the world to reduce risk. Security measures to guard the gold 24/7 have become a problem in Amsterdam. 189,000 kilos of gold will be moved at the beginning of 2022. Maybe this is one reason that over the last decade and a half, the Netherlands was selling off tons of gold in order to reduce its reserve. However, there weren’t that many buyers out there and they sold less than the country wanted. More recently the country has had less ambition to sell gold. Currently, the country holds the same amount of tons, 612.45 that they have over the last few years. However, the country has increased its percentage of foreign reserves to 61.2 %. 8.) Japan Japan is another country which had been increasing its gold reserves since the 1960’s. Their official gold holdings were reported at 765.2 tons. About 2.4% of Japan’s gold today is in foreign reserve. Historically, Japan has always held a bit more gold than other countries. This was true until 2011, when they began to sell some of their reserve in order to pump money into the economy after the tsunami and the following Fukushima nuclear disaster. But even with selling, Japan’s central bank has been one of the most aggressive practitioners of quantitative easing. For example, in January of 2016, it lowered interest rates below zero, which has helped fuel demand in gold around the world. 7.) Switzerland Prior to 1997, Switzerland was steadily building its gold reserves. In 1997, the decision was made to sell some of those reserves to bolster the Swiss currency and diversify the foreign reserves. The percent of foreign reserves in Switzerland is currently 6.7 %. Switzerland actually has the world’s largest reserves of gold per capita and currently has reported 1,040 tons. Over time, many citizens in the country started to feel like the bank was getting rid of too much gold. They then banded together with the “Save the Swiss” movement. However, once everyone was able to vote in 2014, the vote came to a no, and gold continued to be sold. During World War II, Switzerland became the center of the gold trade in Europe, making transactions with both the Allies and Axis powers. Today, much of its gold trading is done with Hong Kong and China. Around last year, the Swiss National Bank made a $5.9 billion profit, reportedly from its gold holdings. America's Sources of Immigration (1850-Today)

In 1850, the vast majority of newcomers were from Ireland and Germany. In the 1860’s the labor shortages during the Civil War created strong demand for immigrant labor, nearly doubling the foreign born population in a decade. 1870 saw Mexico become the top country of origin in much of the Southwest, while British immigrants preferred the rocky mountain territories. The 1880 census showed that the Chinese were coming in large numbers. Many took dangerous jobs in the mines or on railroad building crews. For the next century immigrants from Canada crossing the southern border would be the largest group settling in many of the northernmost American states. In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act blocked the arrival of large numbers of Asian immigrants for much of the next century. Unfortunately the overall microdata for the 1890 census were destroyed in a 1921 fire at the Department of Commerce. So fast-forward to 1900, the turn of the century, when the territorial boundaries of the continental United States were settled. For the first time Norwegians, Swedes, and Italians were the largest groups coming to South Dakota, Minnesota and Louisiana, respectively. 1910 shows us how quickly things can change, with large numbers of Russians and Italians arriving, the only state where Ireland was the top country of origin was tiny Delaware. With the American population exceeded 100 million in the 1920 census, there were equal numbers of German, Italian, and Russian born immigrants. Many had fled Europe to escape the horrors of World War I. By 1930 the industrial revolution was in full swing, and the country was growing rapidly from within, so the percent of foreign born fell. And, for the first time since 1850, Mexico was the dominant country of origin for new arrivals to California. By 1940, the quotas and other congressional measures passed in the previous decade to restrict immigration sharply cut the foreign born population to below 9%. 1950 saw the effects of the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act, as Chinese immigrants were finally welcomed back. Greeks were the largest group arriving in South Carolina. When Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959, the year before the 1960 census, Canadians simply crossed the border to immigrate to The Last Frontier, but Filipinos crossed an entire ocean to become The Aloha State’s largest group. By 1970, the percentage of foreign born reached an all-time low. And with immigrants arriving from a wider range of countries, Italy was the only nation that had sent more than a million people. In 1980, after Congress began granting more visas to people from the Western Hemisphere, the number of states where Mexico was the top country of origin doubled in a decade, becoming the dominant foreign born population in the entire country. And in 1990 America began to look like the diverse country we live in today. Mexico was tops in 18 states, Dominicans were the largest group coming to New York, and South Korea and Southeast Asian nations were the leading countries of origin in seven states. In the year 2000 census the number of Mexican-born immigrants surpassed nine million. It’s also notable that India was the top country of origin in three states. And the 2010 census reveals exactly why America is quickly becoming so diverse: only five states - all of them bordering Canada - received the most immigrants from a majority white country. Labor Markets and Minimum Wage: Crash Course Economics #28

10:38
How much should you get paid for your job? Well, that depends on a lot of factors. Your skill set, the demand for the skills you have, and what other people are getting paid around you all factor in. In a lot of ways, labor markets work on supply and demand, just like many of the markets we talk about in Crash Course Econ. But, again, there aren't a lot of pure, true markets in the world. There are all kinds of oddities and regulations that change the way labor markets work. One common (and kind of controversial one) is the minimum wage. The minimum wage has potential upsides and downsides, and we'll take a look at the various arguments for an against it. Crash Course is on Patreon! Countries That Might Not Survive The Next 30 Years

11:54
At risk countries that might not survive the next 30 years! These are the world's most endangered nations facing potential economic, social, political, and environmental disasters! From the diminishing of Belgian domestic relations to the toxic environmental hazards in China, today we look at Countries That Might Not Survive The Next 30 Years. #9 North Korea Though they continue to claim successful self-reliance, experts believe the resources of North Korea will be depleted over the course of the next two decades. But fluctuating tensions between North and South Korea, as well as between North Korea and the United States, over the past 2 years have teased hints of their entering the modern world and leaving their self-imposed isolation. Talks between the Koreas began earlier this year with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un making many agreements to strengthen relations with their southern neighbors. Among them is their recent pledge to denuclearize, but many believe these statements to simply be progressive on the surface with North Korea adding the requirements of a vague contingency regarding partial denuclearization by the United States. Thus the future of the Koreas, while somewhat hopeful publicly, remains to be seen. #8 Belgium Though united by borders, the people of Belgium are inherently split between the northern region of Flanders and the southern region known as Wallonia. Mostly inhabited by French-speaking peoples, the residents of Wallonia differ greatly from the Flemish people of Flanders. At the center of the two is a region characterized by the countries capital, Brussels, and serves as a multicultural center of the nation. It was established through the Belgian government in the 1980s, following mass divisions over linguistic and class differences, that the Dutch-speaking community, the French-speaking community, and region-specific bodies would all have individual governments within Belgium. As time went on, the responsibilities and jurisdiction of these individual governments grew, and the regions of the nation continued to drift further apart. And with that distance grew the differences between Wallonia and Flanders as cultural and political hostility became a focal point of debate rather than linguistics. Some experts say it is only a matter of time until the two regions seek total independence from each other.

Check out our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/teded View full lesson: https://ed.ted.com/lessons/can-100-renewable-energy-power-the-world-federico-rosei-and-renzo-rosei Every year, the world uses 35 billion barrels of oil. This massive scale of fossil fuel dependence pollutes the earth, and it won’t last forever. On the other hand, we have abundant sun, water and wind, which are all renewable energy sources. So why don’t we exchange our fossil fuel dependence for an existence based only on renewables? Federico Rosei and Renzo Rosei describe the challenges. AMERICA, Why are some COUNTRIES RICH and others POOR? - VisualPolitik EN

12:33
Why are some countries rich and others poor? It sounds like an easy question but... nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the origin of wealth is one of the key issues, if not the most important issue, in political debates. Are there poor countries because there are rich countries? Do the richest countries have any special geographical characteristics that determine their success? Are natural resources the source of their wealth? Are their inhabitants smarter? In this video we’ll try to answer these questions, and we’ll do so by taking a look at the history of the American continent. US invaded Afghanistan to exploit its vast mineral resources: Scholar

09:18
The 2001 invasion of Afghanistan and following occupation by the United States was largely to protect the country’s opium cultivation and exploit its vast mineral resources, particularly the deposits of lithium, according to James Henry Fetzer, an American academic who has been studying the events of 9/11 since late 2001. Fetzer, who is also a journalist with Veterans Truth Network and a retired professor in Madison, Wisconsin, told Press TV on Sunday that “Afghanistan had nothing to do with 9/11.” Watch Live: http://www.presstv.com/live.html YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/videosptv/ Twitter: http://twitter.com/PressTV LiveLeak: http://www.liveleak.com/c/PressTV Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/PRESSTV Google+: http://plus.google.com/+VideosPTV Instagram: http://instagram.com/presstvchannel

Is Economic GROWTH Compatible with the ENVIRONMENT?- VisualPolitik EN

12:05
For the first time in the history of humanity, most of the population doesn’t live in poverty. This is a milestone but at the same time a challenge. More middle-class people with more purchasing power translates into more production and more consumption, something that has led many people to ask themselves, can our planet handle it? What are the implications for the environment? Are we walking towards the destruction of our natural environment and condemning ourselves to live on a polluted planet with exhausted resources? In this video, we’ll tell you how our vision of the world is changing and, also, what we can expect in the next decades. 'We have the best technical team in the country', says AIS Resources chairman

09:20
AIS Resources is listed on the TSX Venture Exchange and has been around since 1967. They have a lithium brine project in Argentina. Chairman Martyn Element and COO Phil Thomas spoke to Proactive at Mines and Money 2016 in London. Element says: ''AIS Resources is actually an investment issuer … which is a micro merchant bank. It just means that we have the breadth and width to be able to do any deal in any sector and there's not many of them - it's quite an unusual vehicle. We have another asset in the company but our main one is the lithium project that we are currently involved with''. ''It was done very purposefully. We got into the lithium project about 5 or 6 months ago and it became evident very quickly that to mean something in this space you have to be in Argentina … but if you're going to be in Argentina you need to have people around you that are very, very technically minded. On the TSXV there might be 95 lithium or lithium-related companies and in my professional opinion only about 5 or 6 are going to make their mark. The fall down we believe is on the technical side and we believe as a company we have the best technical team, even though we're still a very low cap, in the country.'' Thomas adds: ''This is my third project, so it's not like I haven't done it before. The production process follows an extensive exploration process so at the moment, this week actually, we're trenching, we'll be taking samples of brine, we'll create lithium isobars so we know on the surface where the lithium is occurring. Then we'll go down and start drilling and doing some seismic''. ''We're looking at the end of 2018, early 2019 to ship our first load of lithium carbonate and hopefully lithium hydroxide.''

MONEY & RESOURCES THAT EXIST FOR TARGETED INDIVIDUALS WHO WISH TO LEAVE AMERICA DUE HARASSMENT, ETC.

07:10
This information is for emergency purposes and will be most useful for someone with no criminal record or minor stuff on their record that need a new start and need to flee the states due to persistent harassment in every county they move to http://www.publiccounsel.org I share tips for people interested in leaving America to escape community mobbing and organized harassment. If you are a victim of community engagement , community policing etc this information may be beneficial to you. A TEFL can be bought on Groupon $19 bucks at times and I have known people with degrees that have gone this route and secured employment in other countries some had no in a degree in Education but in Business Administration etc. Some people can gain jobs in China with a no degree but you may not receive a sustainable amount of money to survive on. So a degree is recommended. TEFL certifications and Degree can normally be legalized or authenticated by your Secretary of State office in your state also send to the nearest embassy to get legalized for work visa. Many countries require a police certificate that is athenticate and notarized please do research on this .  UN Refugee Offices for those declaring political asylum: http://www.refugeelegalaidinformation.org Background check requirements and information to work in Asia. Council Of International Schools  https://www.cois.org United Nation Human RIghts Complaint Procedure http://www.ohchr.org https://www.lexology.com/library/deta... Global requirements for background checks etc. https://www.mayerbrown.com Some people use degrees from Concordia College and University http://www.concordia-college.net/some people state it is a diplomia mill but it appears it is not since they are in good standing with United Nations and with the state of Tennessee Real Estate Board. So these degrees may be used in other countries . Please do research before buying. Note that even remote jobs exist for teaching English . I knew one guy that simply learned from a few used English books and spent a few months practicing and downloading zip files of lessons to share with students along with studying free TEFL teaching methods and he did just fine. Note some schools pay for your flight to there country and room and board and a salary.  This information is provided for targets that need to leave immediately due to life threatening situations , and due to cyber attacks which prevent you from working in occupations that provide upward mobility. Please note that communication with foreign intelligence agencies may be helpful upon arrival and also communicating with the city officials and local police so they are aware of past issues so they can help protect the community the community from health and public safety threats. Always be honest with your employers about your past also note that many countries require a Police Certificate before arrival because you could be unable to work in a certain field for a few months or weeks without it. FBI background checks are required in some countries and some countries require none and in South America some schools do not care about your past as long as your a good person that will work hard and provide quality training. Many countries just require a local or national background check conducted and then they require they documents be notorized at your local police dept. and send the the Dept of State -secretary for your state and notoraized again and then you normally have to get them legalized or notoraized again at a Embassy and have them tranlated for a small fee at times.  Note these gang stalking movements are also operating in all cities across America and in the 5 eye countries.  Misc References : Secret Policing University of Chicago Legal Forum Volume 2016 Article 4  http://chicagounbound.uchicago.edu/cg... We live in a time of unprecedented population growth. People born 60 years ago have seen the population of the world triple. In the UK, in the past 100 years, the population has grown by over 20 million. But why is our population growing? What are the consequences if it doesn't stop? And is population growth necessarily a bad thing? Our reporter Benjamin Zand has been finding out. A World Without Water (Environmental Catastrophe Documentary)

01:14:04
This film investigates the future of the world's water, and paints a disturbing picture of a world running out of the most basic of life's essentials. 8 year old Vanessa and her parents have to walk almost a mile down the cliffs of El Alto in Bolivia to collect water from an unreliable well every day. Yet, they live just a few hundred metres from their city's main water treatment plant and can see millions of gallons just beyond the barbed wire fence. They are victims of waters increasing commodification. The struggle for this precious resource and the battle for its ownership is explored through compelling stories of families living in Bolivia, Detroit, Dar Es Salaam and Rajestan. As the background to these stories we explore the conflicts over the future of water and see how even those living in the relatively water-rich UK hold the survival of the planet in our hands. Trump Wasted $210 Million On His Midterm Border Stunt

03:34
According to numbers from the Pentagon, the total amount of money that the President cost the United States to send both the military and the National Guard to the border to protect us from the “migrant caravan” before the midterms comes to $210 million. That money was spent to drum up fear about immigrants ahead of the midterms, but it didn’t stop Republicans from losing 40 seats in the House. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins discusses this.   Link – https://www.newstatesman.com/world/north-america/2018/12/trump-s-election-stunt-border-cost-us-taxpayers-210m Become a member today!: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYWIEbibRcZav6xMLo9qWWw/join Support us by becoming a monthly patron on Patreon, and help keep progressive media alive!: https://www.patreon.com/TheRingofFire Spread the word! Well, according to filings from the Pentagon this week, the numbers are in and Donald Trump's little military at the border stunt to stop the caravan ahead of the midterms has cost American taxpayers $210,000,000 in the days following the 2018 midterm election. Donald Trump did not say a word about the alleged migrant caravan headed towards our border. In fact, I think it was close to two weeks after the midterms when he finally started talking about it again. It's almost as if he forgot that it was a problem, and before the election, that was the most pressing problem ever that the United States has faced because according to the president and his administration, this was a caravan that was filled with criminals, was killed, filled with MS-13 gang members, possibly even members of Isis. They suggested we didn't know it was just this caravan of criminals headed towards the border. Military had to go there and national guard had to go there. Everybody had to be ready to stop this caravan and then nothing, no word, no talking about it. Everybody realized it was 100 percent a political stunt and it's a political stunt that actually likely save Ted Cruz his job in the Senate because it did what it was supposed to do. Donald Trump did energize the Republican base. There were voters in Minnesota that were interviewed that said they were worried about the caravan making its way to Minnesota and buying up the lake front property so that minnesotans couldn't buy it anymore. That is literally what one woman said, trust me. There is nobody coming from any part of the planet that says, you know what? Let's walk a thousand miles and go to Minnesota. No offense, Minnesota, but there's better places. If you're going to walk 8,000 miles, 500 miles, you could probably pick a place a little bit warmer and nicer. Nonetheless. We know this was a political stunt by the president. It's a political stunt that paid off for him with the Senate votes, but it didn't stop him from losing 40 seats in the House of Representatives, but more importantly, it wasted our money. It wasted our time. It wasted our resources. It wasted our military and our national guard because at the end of the day, few hundred people showed up at the border, women children and we tear gas them and that's what happened. That's the end of that story so far. We are abusing human rights and as I pointed out at the time, which is still true and people wanted to argue, but look up the Geneva protocols and you'll see firing tear gas at people, especially from our border into another country is 100 percent a war crime by the way. That is by definition, that's a war crime tear gas not allowing a warfare yet we used it to shoot from our border over into another country and that is a war crime. So $210,000,000, couple of war crimes committed by US soldiers and fearful Republicans taking back more seats in the US Senate. Was it worth it? The average American would say, absolutely hell no, but to Donald Trump, $210,000,000 to energize his base was well, well worth it.

Life Is Good : Sustainable Living (National Geographic Documentary)

40:09
Life Is Good : Sustainable Living (National Geographic Documentary) Sustainable living is a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual's or society's use of the Earth's natural resources and personal resources. Practitioners of sustainable living often attempt to reduce their carbon footprint by altering methods of transportation, energy consumption, and diet. Proponents of sustainable living aim to conduct their lives in ways that are consistent with sustainability, in natural balance and respectful of humanity's symbiotic relationship with the Earth's natural ecology and cycles. The practice and general philosophy of ecological living is highly interrelated with the overall principles of sustainable development. Lester R. Brown, a prominent environmentalist and founder of the Worldwatch Institute and Earth Policy Institute, describes sustainable living in the twenty-first century as "shifting to a renewable energy–based, reuse/recycle economy with a diversified transport system." In addition to this philosophy, practical eco-village builders like Living Villages maintain that the shift to renewable technologies will only be successful if the resultant built environment is attractive to a local culture and can be maintained and adapted as necessary over the generations.
