The way we think about charity is dead wrong | Dan Pallotta

18:55
Activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standard that drives our broken relationship to charities. Too many nonprofits, he says, are rewarded for how little they spend -- not for what they get done. Instead of equating frugality with morality, he asks us to start rewarding charities for their big goals and big accomplishments (even if that comes with big expenses). In this bold talk, he says: Let's change the way we think about changing the world. Private Sector vs. Public Sector

02:11
If you were mailing an extremely important package, you'd probably trust FedEx more than the U.S. Postal Service. But why? Is it because FedEx is a private company, while the post office is run by the government? What are the differences between the "private sector" and the government sector? Why does it matter? Find out in this animated two-minute video. Donate today to PragerU! http://l.prageru.com/2ylo1Yt This video is part of a collaborative business and economics project with Job Creators Network. Politicians in the media often talk about the private and public sectors of our economy but what's the difference? And which one is more effective? The private sector is made up of businesses or corporations owned by people. The private sector includes malls, grocery stores, and your local diner. To make a profit in the private sector, businesses must earn our money by offering us products and services that we want or need. When businesses have to compete for the same dollars, prices go down because no one wants to pay twice as much for shoes at one store if you can get the same pair cheaper at another place. On the other hand, the public sector is not supported by profits. It doesn't have to compete for our dollars. Instead, the public sector uses our tax dollars to fund its services. So we pay for these programs no matter how much or how little we use them. The government decides how our tax dollars should be spent in the public sector. This makes sense for some things. For example, you probably wouldn't want firefighters or police officers competing with one another for your business. In other cases though, this means things cost more or service is worse. The U.S. Post Office has $100 billion in debt and is regularly bailed out with taxpayer money. And the Department of Motor Vehicles isn't usually known for fast, friendly service. In contrast, private companies know that if they offer poor customer service and don't make money, they'll go out of business. When comparing the private sector with the public sector, it's clear that the market-driven private sector is more efficient. When you don't have to be profitable or accountable, things tend to be more expensive and the service is worse. So when there's a choice between a private sector or a government service, think about that package you really need delivered.

[Robert Kiyosaki] 4 Assets that make people Rich

02:53
Subscribe for more great videos, or check out: www.SRPL.net ========================== My poor dad always told me to me go to school and get a high-paying job. That’s not creating wealth. That's a job. My rich dad on the other hand always says work for assets. There are basically 4 asset classes that makes a person rich. Number 1 is Business. The richest young guys today start companies. Some great examples of this are Facebook, Google, Apple, etc. Number 2 is real estate. What my rich dad taught me is the combination of being an entrepreneur in business and an entrepreneur in real estate. Now due to this combination, I pay no tax and I make a lot more money. The 3rd asset is Paper. Savings in gold, papers like stocks bonds mutual funds are liquid. You make a mistake, you can get in and out real quick. The last asset is Commodities and this is why I own oil because in the U.S. if you deal in oil, you get tax breaks. So oil is very profitable. ========================== Subscribe for more great videos, or check out: www.SRPL.net

Fundraising 101: Rueben Mayes at TEDxWSU 2014

16:34
Everyone at some point in their lives are asked to raise money for things whether a high school baseball tournament trip or part of a campaign. There are some fundamental elements to successfully raise money for all types of causes. My seven keys to successful fundraising will help all those who want to effectively put a plan in place and meet the fundraising goal. I will use some of my NFL and fundraising experiences as examples of how to successfully fund raise. Bio- Rueben Mayes leverages his passion for people and philanthropy to deliver the necessary resources in support of the Pullman Regional Hospital Mission. His success as a college two-time consensus All-American, National College Hall of Fame Inductee, NFL Rookie of the Year and multi-year Pro Bowl selectee opens many doors and builds rapport beyond his 20 year fundraising career. He went on to earn an MBA in 2000 and recently the re-designation of Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credentials. As Chief Development Officer, Rueben works closely with Department Medical Directors, physicians, hospital executive staff, foundation boards and committees to grow system-wide philanthropic/investment support for key priorities Rueben has been married for over 26 years to Marie Mayes (both WSU Alumnus) and they have two sons, Logan and Kellen. Volunteer community involvement activities include non profit fundraising consulting. His hobbies are fishing, reading, cooking, and is also an avid, golfer, skier and swimmer. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Top 4 Examples of Effective Social Media Strategies for Nonprofit Organizations

01:27
Top 4 Examples of Effective Social Media Strategies for Nonprofit Organizations Are you currently responsible for managing and growing social media presence for a non-profit organization? If so, you see how these guys have done it. 1. WATERisLIFE--Capturing a trending hashtag The hashtag "firstworldproblems" is popular and trends on a regular basis. According to data from Keyhole.co, this hashtag has a potential reach of 1.2 million. WATERisLIFE used this hashtag and the idea behind it to spread their viral video, the First World Problems Anthem. The video features people in situations of serious need repeating common #firstworldproblems, for example, "I hate it when my phone charger won't reach my bed." The video highlights the irony of our own problems, placing them into stark relief against the deeper needs of those who lack clean water. The strategy proved remarkably effective as the video went viral on Facebook and Twitter, expanding WATERisLIFE's reach. One WATERisLIFE spokesperson explained, We call it hashtag killer. Not just an attempt to end a hashtag, but to use social media to affect a real change in our world. Takeaway: Hashtags are an important source of marketing virality and should be used whenever possible. 2. Animal Foundation--Adding convenience to donations Nonprofits need donations. Engagement on social media is great, but what about the more pressing need of funds? There are technologies that have risen to the challenge. Charitweet is one tool that allows people to give to a cause directly through Twitter. Similar tools include Goodworld and SnapDonate. The ease and convenience of Charitweet is what has allowed organizations like Animal Foundation to raise money. An active presence on Twitter combined with regular donation calls to action allows these nonprofits to gain more from their social media efforts. Takeaway: Provide a convenient way to capture your followers' most valuable form of engagement. 3. Make-A-Wish--Encouraging donations on the most popular platform Most nonprofits--98% of them--are on Facebook. Facebook represents one of the easiest and most effective ways to take the leap into social media and gain a following. But facebook is also a challenging platform. Due to the decline in organic reach, many nonprofits have found their engagement rates drop to 2% or less. Regardless of the decline in reach, nonprofits would do well to optimize their Facebook pages for maximum results. One way to do this is to follow the example of Make-A-Wish. Make-A-Wish's Facebook page includes three buttons on their cover photo: "Donate Now," "Like," and "Message." The prominence of the "Donate Now" button makes it easy for users to give to the organization. Donations are how nonprofits survive. Asking for donations on the most popular platform is a smart move. Takeaway: Identify where users are most likely to engage with your organization, and add a call to action. 4. Human Rights Campaign--Creating a movement through Facebook profile pictures In the wake of the Paris attack tragedies, millions of Facebook users added a filter overlay of the French flag to their profile pictures. The act of solidarity and support spread rapidly across the social media platform, creating awareness and showcasing concern.

9 WORST Company Failures!

11:04
Dumbest ways companies have failed to predict the future or made decisions that bankrupted them! Whatever happened to Blockbuster and Borders? Find out on this countdown of epic business blunders! #9. “Kodak”- The Eastman Kodak Company was founded in 1888 and was the most successful company in the photography industry during the 20th Century. They were the leaders in bringing the cutting edge of photographic technology and easy to use cameras to the hands of consumers throughout the world. But Kodak almost met its demise at the hands of a product that it actually invented: digital photography. Kodak invented this technology in 1975, but failed to jump on the innovation, believing that common applications for it were well into the future. Early on, the company thought that the high cost and complexity that would be needed to make a push into the digital front weren’t in Kodak’s best interests. So, Kodak put digital photography to the side to be picked back up when the time was financially advantageous, but they waited too long. By the time they switched gears, they faced competitors who had been perfecting their business models with digital photography at the center, whereas Kodak’s model was still dependent on printed photos. While other companies made deals with websites, phone companies and focused on online based imaging, Kodak floundered and in 2012 filed for Bankruptcy. They have since come back from bankruptcy and started specializing in producing smartphones and tablets. #8. “Pan American”- From 1927 until 1991, Pan Am was the largest airline company in the United States, but due to bad foresight, callous labor practices and an uncontrollable disaster this global giant quickly met its end. The company basically had a monopoly on overseas travel until World War II but was dealt its first major blow when other strong airline companies began to up their game. Pan Am fought off the competitors with its innovations such as jumbo jets and an advanced system for making reservations but these innovations couldn’t match the corporate aptitude and human relations that the other airlines dealt with more astutely. One of the main reasons for Pan Am’s failure was ironically due to its early successes. Because of the sheer size of its fleet, it was the company hit the hardest by the 1973 oil crisis. Just before the crisis, Pan Am had just purchased a number of brand new gas-guzzling Boeing 747s and was forced to dramatically raise ticket prices to recuperate. As it was trying to recover from this setback it had also become a target of terrorism in the Middle East. To the terrorists Pan Am was a symbol of the United States overseas because it was the largest U.S. airline servicing the area. During the Gulf War, in the midst of financial hardships and battles with labor unions, Pan American 103 on a transatlantic flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Detroit was blown up by Libyan nationals above the Scottish town of Lockerbie. The incident scared even more customers away from flying Pan Am and many travel agents would no longer book flights on their planes. All of these events and poor managing of them led Pan American International Airways to declare bankruptcy and completely fold in 1991. #7. “Borders”- Tom and Louis Borders opened their first bookstore in 1971. Their vast selection of books and innovative inventory system turned them into the second biggest chain of book megastores. Due to years of miscalculating the future of book consumption, the bookstore all but vanished in 2011. It all started in the mid 90s when Amazon and other online stores hit the scene. Instead of developing their own website and focusing on online sales, the company decided to further their storefront endeavors and expanded into Europe and Asia opening hundreds of stores. Their competitor Barnes and Noble, did the opposite by preparing for the digital age, perfecting their online sales system and focusing on their storefront operations in the United States. When Borders did start to catch on to the online market they were already far behind and decided to use Amazon as a host for such sales. Because of this, as more and more sales were made online, instead of receiving 100% of the profit they had to share with Amazon. Borders also was caught in the past by devoting lots of money and inventory towards DVDs and CDs at a time when digital music and video was on the rise. While Barnes and Noble developed it’s own e-reader to grab paperless book market by the horns, Borders was extremely slow to adapt to the change. All of these factors came to a boiling point in 2006 when, after several years of losing millions of dollars Borders filed for bankruptcy. By 2011, Borders realized there was no way out and closed most of its remaining stores. The only stores remaining are in southeast asia where it remain Borders in name only, as they were sold to a company named Popular Holdings.

What are the Most Profitable Franchises?

07:20
What are the Most Profitable Franchises? Let's start off with the single highest grossing franchise I have ever encountered in my career. It was a sign franchise, so a franchise that designs, creates and installs signs for businesses. This single unit franchise was generating 30 million dollars a year from a single location. That number is far and away the highest I had ever heard of. But is the sign industry so great? We'll yes, sign franchises and specifically B2B or business to business focused franchises are quite good and they are a sector that most people aren't even aware of. But why are these franchises potentially so profitable? Well it comes down to the business model and the ability of the owner to directly influence his or her business. For sake of comparison look at a McDonalds franchise and their operational model. You set up a location, send out some flyers and coupons and hope for the best. There is really not a whole lot an owner can do to increase the profits of their franchise. Sure they can network the community, meet people and most good local franchise owners do, but that doesnt really impact the revenue in any big way. But when you own a franchise that provides services to businesses, you have a huge impact on the revenues of your store. And here is where once again we see that not all franchises are great for everyone. But someone with a sales, marketing or B2B networking background can really do well by coordinating a sales crew, or in a smaller franchise going out themselves and generating business locally. And that function is not something most people like to do. But the reality is the most profitable franchises are very often tied to businesses where the owner or their employees work quite diligently on new business generation. Now for some potential owners they just want to earn as much money as possible and sell the franchise in a few years for a million dollars. Others wan't a more laid back situation and just stand behind the counter - again - no best franchise. But in cases of where money is the priority there are a lot of these business to business franchises available that allow for direct influence over the amount of money that comes in and the harder and smarter one works the higher the revenues. So let's look at some real world examples. Sign shops are great and will always be in huge demand. Printing, is another business and some of these shops get into the specialty field like car wraps which is a great niche market. We work with several franchises in printing and signs investments start at about $200K give us a call to see which are available in your area or visit our franchise directory to browse them all. Staffing and employment franchises are also potential big money makers. And these are also often lower overhead businesses where you are not buying or selling any products so margins are good. Express Employment, the 4th largest employment franchise in the world has average owners that are open 1 year doing over a million, and their average mature office does 6.2 million in sales. Again we work with several employment franchises call to check territory availability your investment will range from aboutv $80,000 to $200,000 If you have a business background business consulting or coaching can be very profitable and great from an ROI perspective. many of these franchises have low start up costs under $50,000, can be operated from home, have low overhead and very high margins, 6 figures are expected and some top producers earn over a million. Within that group as well are speciality consulting franchises, such a cost reduction consulting where you help companies save money on telecom or billing costs, or energy consulting where you help companies save money on their energy costs. These are all cash businesses no inventory and low margins so can be very profitable. If you have access to a lot of cash there are franchises that actually help you become a short term lender to businesses and will match your loans to six times. With these franchises you earn revenue just like a bank with short term business loans. This is a mostly passive business and can be quite lucrative once your business has a few regular clients. So there you have it, some highly profitable franchise ideas and industries that allow the owner to directly influence their amount of earnings by proactively targeting business to business clients. If money is important and you have the skills, business to business franchises can be the most profitable choice. Don't forget to like and subscribe and come visit our new franchise directory where you can browse hundreds of franchises I'll put the link up here. Thanks for watching. http://www.franchise.city/franchises/

The Way to Easy Profit Measurement_2 EXAMPLES (fully elaborated)

03:41
Give help, this video must go viral, in the interest of students business economics world-wide. The Profit Formula® can be introduced and immediately applied in all schools, institutes and universities all over the world. Inform fellow students and teachers. Profit Calculus - Theory & Exemplary Problems http://www.shaker.de/de/content/catalogue/index.asp?lang=de&ID=8&ISBN=978-90-423-0445-1&search=yes By Jan Jacobs You can access my papers on SSRN at: https://ssrn.com/author=333079 The Profit Formula® Basic equation of profit measurement Integration of nominalism and substantialism, both general and specific, and with the exact calculation of the burden of taxation. This equation includes each and every capital maintenance concept and does not exclude a single concept of value. Anybody can measure profit over a randomly chosen period, of any length. The Profit Formula® is exceptionally user-friendly. Working with this profit-meter is relatively simple. 'Profit = Total Sales -/- Total Costs' is not good enough. Depreciation and amortisation, interest costs and tax burden are exogenous variables within the old formula – these cost items happen to be outcomes of separate calculations with several arbitrary choices – whereas they all are endogenous variables within the new formula, ipso facto separate calculations are not needed anymore. A tremendous amount of money can be saved, including for cases of historical cost accounting (measuring fiscal profit). The budgets of many accounts departments can be cut drastically. Up until now managers have run their companies from the back seat. From sheer necessity, lacking a decent financial standard. At long last The Profit Formula® puts them, and you, in the driver's seat.

Zero Based Budgeting: Definition & Process |Advantages or disadvantages/ Examples👍

05:56
What is Zero-Based Budgeting: Definition & Process |Advantages or disadvantages/ Examples #Zero Based #Budgeting, also called #ZBB, is the process of creating a budget from nothing without using the prior year’s budget or spending numbers. No activities are assumed to be untouchable. All expenses are judged and must be justified in order to remain in the budget. Zero-Based Budgeting Definition In another way to explain this concept, under Zero Based @Budget, managers are required to justify all budgeted expenditures, not just changes in the budget from the previous year. The baseline is zero rather than last year’s budget. To like us on Facebook, visit https://www.facebook.com/accountingPlusS/ Subscribe us: https://www.youtube.com/accountingplus Zero-based budgeting process There are a few different steps in zero-based budgeting to keep in mind. The process of zero-based budgeting follows the same basic steps: 1. Identify business goals 2. Develop and analyze new ways to achieve goals 3. Discover new ways to fund business processes 4. Prioritize funds Zero Based Budgeting advantages Resulting budget is well justified and aligned to strategy • Catalyzes broader collaboration across the organization • Supports cost reduction by avoiding automatic budget increases, often resulting in savings • Improves operational efficiency by rigorous challenging of assumptions Zero Based Budgeting Disadvantages There are also disadvantages to the application of Zero Based Budgeting: Time-consuming Sometimes the necessary expenditures are hard to define for managers as a result of which it becomes too time-consuming and exhaustive a process to arrive at a solid foundation with respect to the decision-making about the investment. Requires manpower This approach forces staff (especially managers) to justify every detail related to the expenditures. For instance, because the R&D department cannot completely underpin their intended innovation, this could have advantages for the budgeting of another department because they are able to justify their expenditures in great detail. Zero Based Budgeting requirements This financial management approach requires much documentation and justification. In addition to the total budget, the manager responsible must identify all expected expenditures and rank all of the activities according to their relevant importance and costs. The persons ultimately responsible (high-level managers) can make decisions about investments and budget cuts that can be justified at all times based on their supporting information and no immediate pre-financing as is the case in the traditional manner of budgeting. Zero Based Budgeting Application This type of budgeting usually occurs in the government and non-profit sectors. The philosophy behind Zero Based Budgeting is good. However, it should be noted that zero based budgeting requires frequent reviews. In Zero Based Budgeting reviews are carried every year on account of the fact that it is a time-consuming and costly process. Interim reviews can be carried out but that is the organization’s choice with respect to time and priority. Zero-based budgeting example Let’s say you run a hair salon and sell shampoo and conditioner to customers. Last year, you purchased these products from another company for $30,000. You decide to use zero-based budgeting for the upcoming year. As you’re listing expenses, you realize you can make your own hair products for cheaper than the supplier’s price. Making your own products will save you $22,000. When creating your zero-based budget, you would only mark $8,000 ($30,000 less $22,000) as the expense budget for the beauty products. You also realize that you can cut back on advertisements. Instead of spending $10,000 in this example of zero-based budgeting, you only need to spend $3,000. You would mark $3,000 for advertisements. And, you find out you can get a better rate from a different office supplier, saving you $500. Instead of $1,500, your supplies will now only cost you $1,000. What are the "Best" Franchises?

11:15
Last video where we discussed "best franchises" I got some flak from viewers because I didn't give any solid examples of what the supposedly "Best Franchises" actually are. I'll try and do better this time. But in my defense what is the "Best franchise?" That's completely subjective. And that is why in the last video I didn't mention any names because to do so would be impossible. It's the same as me asking you what is the best car. It depends entirely on your situation and your needs. You wouldn't want a Lamborghini to go 4 wheeling or to drive kids to sports and it's the same for franchising - every person, every location, every budget, every situation is different. But let's break it down and give some individual examples of what a best franchise might mean for you. We have found there are varying top priorities people seek in a franchise. and depending on what your priorities are your best franchise choices will be entirely different. Those 6 priorities are as follows 1. Passive or absentee ownership 2. High earnings 3.Exit Strategy and Resale 4.Lifestyle Businesses 5.Low Cost or driven by budget 6. Lowest Risk These 6 categories have several or even hundreds of franchise choices in each category and from an overall perspective most people will find their "best franchise" in one of these 6 categories. Obviously we wont have time to cover them all as there are hundreds - but we will look at industries within each group that are best suited for your goals. Now depending on which of those are important to you your best franchise choices will be entirely different. Not to mention many people have no idea how much franchises actually make and just go with the big names thinking they pay the big bucks. Not true in fact often the opposite. Lets break down these 6 categories one by one. 1. Passive investment. Some people don't want to actively work in the franchise because they have an existing job or run another business, or it may be a celebrity or investor group. Obviously they don't want to work behind the counter so they need a business that will allow for passive or absentee ownership. Now keep in mind these will not be your highest moneymakers because you also need to hire additional senior management in your place to run your store. many people are under the mistaken impression that all franchises can be run passively and that is just not true. In fact many of them have clauses requiring you to be actively involved in the operation of the store. So from a purely passive ownership perspective some of the best franchise choices are Hair salons, certain types of restaurants, automotive repair and body shop centers, certain learning and tutoring centers, certain health clubs or massage outlets and assorted business services franchises. These businesses also have sufficient margins to allow you to hire a manager and still earn a profit. You typically wont make a lot of money from one location with these types of franchises so the ultimate goal should be multi unit ownership which you can build over time. That's a great move as in a decade you could own 5-10 locations and sell them off for a nice profit.
