Should We Trust Studies On Mice?

03:44
Over the last century, 95% of all medical experiments have been done on lab mice. But are they the perfect laboratory stand-in for humans? Some recent studies may suggest otherwise. Read More: Of mice, not men http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2014-11/uoc--omn111714.php “For more than a century, the laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) has stood in for humans in experiments ranging from deciphering disease and brain function to explaining social behaviors and the nature of obesity.” New comprehensive view of the mouse genome finds many similarities and striking differences with human genome http://www.genome.gov/27559596 “Looking across evolutionary time and the genomic landscapes of humans and mice, an international group of researchers has found powerful clues to why certain processes and systems in the mouse - such as the immune system, metabolism and stress response - are so different from those in people.” Mus musculus (house mouse) http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/genome?term=mus%20musculus “The mouse is one of the major organisms for modeling human disease and comparative genome analysis.” What are some backgrounds that scientists use mice for? http://scienceline.ucsb.edu/getkey.php?key=1226 “Mice are used in a wide variety of scientific projects. Mice breed very quickly,so scientists often use mice to study questions about genetics.” Why Do Medical Researchers Use Mice? http://www.livescience.com/32860-why-do-medical-researchers-use-mice.html “From formulating new cancer drugs to testing dietary supplements, mice and rats play a critical role in developing new medical wonders.” Advantages of the mouse as a model organism http://research.jax.org/mousegenetics/advantages/advantages-of-mouse.html “Among the many advantages to using the mouse as a model organism, the most important is their striking similarity to humans in anatomy, physiology, and genetics.” The Mouse Trap http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/the_mouse_trap/2011/11/lab_mice_are_they_limiting_our_understanding_of_human_disease_.html “Mark Mattson knows a lot about mice and rats. He's fed them; he's bred them; he's cut their heads open with a scalpel.” A comparative encyclopedia of DNA elements in the mouse genome http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v515/n7527/pdf/nature13992.pdf “The laboratory mouse shares the majority of its protein- coding genes with humans, making it the premier model organism in biomedical research, yet the two mammals differ in significant ways.” ____________________ DNews is dedicated to satisfying your curiosity and to bringing you mind-bending stories & perspectives you won't find anywhere else! The Curious History of the Lab Rat

04:19
If you give them any thought at all, you probably associate them with sewers, cargo ships and maybe animated movies about animals that want to become French chefs. But for almost 200 years, tens of millions of rats have played a central role in science, performing a job they did not volunteer for, and one that almost always results in a premature death. Here at SciShow we explore the big questions like, "Why the rat?". Like SciShow? Want to help support us, and also get things to put on your walls, cover your torso and hold your liquids? GMOs and Roundup - 'GMOs Cause Tumors in Rats' Scientist Wins Defamation Lawsuit

12:35
GMOs and Roundup: 'GMOs Cause Tumors in Rats' Scientist Wins Defamation Lawsuit In November 2012, the Journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology published a paper titled Long Term Toxicity of Roundup Herbicide and a Roundup-Tolerant genetically modified maize by Gilles-Eric Seralini and his team of researchers at France’s Caen University. It was a very significant study that made a lot of noise worldwide, the first of its kind under controlled conditions that examined the possible effects of a GMO maize diet treated with Monsanto’s Roundup Herbicide. After the research was completed, it went through rigorous reviews, as well as a four month review process by scientists and researchers. It was eventually approved and published, only to be retracted by request of the Journal. Although hundreds of scientists around the world condemned the retraction, and the researchers addressed the criticisms, it was to no avail. This major GMO study has now been republished following its controversial retraction (under strong commercial pressure), with even more up to date information and a response to previous criticisms. “We also show that the decision to retract cannot be rationalized on any discernible scientific or ethical grounds. Censorship of research into health risks undermines the value and the credibility of science, thus, we republish our paper.” – Seralini As always, use this info to gather more info. We’ve talked a lot in this series about how often you see data and statistics in the news and on social media - which is ALL THE TIME! But how do you know who and what you can trust? Today, we’re going to talk about how we, as consumers, can spot flawed studies, sensationalized articles, and just plain poor reporting. And this isn’t to say that all science articles you read on facebook or in magazines are wrong, but that it's valuable to read those catchy headlines with some skepticism. Crash Course is on Patreon! What Is Wrong With People? Qanon Dig Mind Control

Support for my work: https://paypal.me/PollyStGeorge Q repeatedly mentioned the war for our minds. In this video I talk about Christine Blasey Ford's Stanford research into hypnotherapy & the exploration of ego-dystonic states as they relate to Mind Control of the masses. Does this type of research play into the seeming psychosis of a certain segment of our population as they fight to have their 1st and 2nd amendment rights taken away and are calling for an end to due process?? Dr. Volek & Dr. Phinney - Translating the Basic Science of Nutritional Ketosis & Keto-Adaptation

40:52
Filmed at the Emerging Science of Carbohydrate Restriction and Nutritional Ketosis, Scientific Sessions at The Ohio State University Learn more at https://blog.virtahealth.com/category/science-research/ An impressive body of scientific evidence over the last 15 years documents long term benefits of carbohydrate-restricted, especially ketogenic, diets. We now understand molecular mechanisms and why they work. Popular books and articles now challenge the advice ‘carbohydrates are good and fats are bad.’ Circa mid-19th century urinary ketones were identified in diabetics sealing their toxic label for the next 150 years. Despite work four decades ago showing ketones were highly functional metabolites, they are still misidentified as toxic byproducts of fat metabolism. The vilification of fat by regulatory and popular dogma perpetuates this myth. But the nutrition-metabolic landscape is improving dramatically. A growing number of researchers have contributed to what is now a critical mass of science that provides compelling clinical evidence that ketogenic diets uniquely benefit weight loss, pre-diabetes, and type-2 diabetes. In the last five years, basic scientists have discovered that b-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), the primary circulating ketone, is a potent signaling molecule that decreases inflammation and oxidative stress. BHB has been suggested to be a longevity metabolite, with strong support from recently published mouse studies showing decreased midlife mortality and extended longevity and healthspan. Although type-2 diabetes is often described as a chronic progressive disease, emerging evidence indicates that sustained nutritional ketosis can reverses the disease. There is growing interest in studying potential therapeutic effects of ketosis on cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. There are even reasons certain athletes may benefit from nutritional ketosis and ketone supplements ─ debunking the long-standing dogma that high carbohydrate intake is required to perform optimally. With the support of the well-established Ohio State Food Innovation Center, this conference will bring together the top experts in these fields to share what has been achieved and what remains to be done to advance this exciting field of scientific discovery.

Empathy and Pro-Social Behavior in Rats (s2)

02:07
Movie S2: Learning to open the door. Activity of the same free rat on days 1, 5, and 12 of the paradigm is shown. On day 1, the rat does not open the restrainer and 5 min of activity is shown at 20 times real time speed. On day 5, the rat opens the restrainer door for the first time 25 min into the session. Note the momentary startle at the door falling and the extended interaction with the liberated rat. On day 12, the rat opens the restrainer within the first minute. There is no startle and much less interaction between the two rats. Activity from days 5 and 12 are shown at real time. Rats Feel Each Other's Pain - Rats Feel Each Other's Pain http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2011/12/rats-feel-each-others-pain.html?ref=hp - Helping Your Fellow Rat: Rodents Show Empathy-Driven Behavior The first evidence of empathy-driven helping behavior in rodents has been observed in laboratory rats that repeatedly free companions from a restraint, according to a new study by University of Chicago neuroscientists. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/12/111208141933.htm - Empathetic Rats Help Each Other Out The act of helping others out of empathy has long been associated strictly with humans and other primates, but new research shows that rats exhibit this prosocial behavior as well. http://www.sott.net/articles/show/238683-Empathetic-Rats-Help-Each-Other-Out Reference - Social Modulation of Pain as Evidence for Empathy in Mice Science 30 June 2006: Vol. 312 no. 5782 pp. 1967-1970 DOI: 10.1126/science.1128322 http://www.sciencemag.org/content/312/5782/1967.short Abstract Empathy is thought to be unique to higher primates, possibly to humans alone. We report the modulation of pain sensitivity in mice produced solely by exposure to their cagemates, but not to strangers, in pain. Mice tested in dyads and given an identical noxious stimulus displayed increased pain behaviors with statistically greater co-occurrence, effects dependent on visual observation. When familiar mice were given noxious stimuli of different intensities, their pain behavior was influenced by their neighbor's status bidirectionally. Finally, observation of a cagemate in pain altered pain sensitivity of an entirely different modality, suggesting that nociceptive mechanisms in general are sensitized. - Empathy and Pro-Social Behavior in Rats Science 9 December 2011: Vol. 334 no. 6061 pp. 1427-1430 DOI: 10.1126/science.1210789 http://www.sciencemag.org/content/334/6061/1427.abstract Abstract Whereas human pro-social behavior is often driven by empathic concern for another, it is unclear whether nonprimate mammals experience a similar motivational state. To test for empathically motivated pro-social behavior in rodents, we placed a free rat in an arena with a cagemate trapped in a restrainer. After several sessions, the free rat learned to intentionally and quickly open the restrainer and free the cagemate. Rats did not open empty or object-containing restrainers. They freed cagemates even when social contact was prevented. When liberating a cagemate was pitted against chocolate contained within a second restrainer, rats opened both restrainers and typically shared the chocolate. Thus, rats behave pro-socially in response to a conspecific's distress, providing strong evidence for biological roots of empathically motivated helping behavior. 30 GENIUS HACKS FOR YOUR LIFE

19:57
GENIUS HACKS FOR ANY SITUATION These life hacks and tricks are gonna be unexpectedly helpful in numerous life situations. If you often use eyewear you'll like these hacks. If your glasses often fogging up, I advise you to rub some plain soap into the glasses and then wipe it up with a napkin as usual. When your eyeglasses keep slipping down, take two rubber bands, tie them round the temples of the glasses. That's it, no more slipping down! If you're just trying to pick up a new pair of glasses or buying eyewear for the first time, don't forget to take the table test. Simply put the eyeglasses right on the table and then carefully look at the glasses' temple tips, whether they both reach the table surface or not. If not, it means the temple tips are of different length! It may cause a lot of discomfort while wearing them. In case you have high myopia of −6.00 diopters or more and accidentally lost your eyewear on the working desk. Grab your phone, turn on the camera and zoom in on the table surface until you see your glasses. Another nasty problem every four-eyed probably faced - scratches on the lenses. Put some toothpaste on the lens and rub it in. Did you know how handy plastic bags can be? You can use them as a smartphone case to protect your gadget from the damp and sand when you take it to the beach with you. You can cook an awesome puffy omelet using plastic bag as well! How Scientists Found a New Neuron Hiding in Our Brains

03:20
This never-before-seen neuron was just found in the human brain, and it might hold the secret to what separates us from other animals. We Didn’t Think This Part of the Brain Existed, and It Could Save Your Life - https://youtu.be/RO3gTX1nlYE Read More: Meet the Rosehip Cell, A New Kind of Neuron https://www.wired.com/story/meet-the-rosehip-cell-a-new-kind-of-neuron/ “ On Monday, an international team of researchers introduced the world to a new kind of neuron, which, at this point, is believed to exist only in the human brain. The long nerve fibers known as axons of these densely bundled cells bulge in a way that reminded their discoverers of a rose without its petals—so much that they named them ‘rosehip cells.’” Scientists identify a new kind of human brain cell https://alleninstitute.org/what-we-do/brain-science/news-press/articles/scientists-identify-new-kind-human-brain-cell “In a new study published today in the journal Nature Neuroscience, Lein and his colleagues reveal one possible answer to that difficult question. The research team, co-led by Lein and Gábor Tamás, Ph.D., a neuroscientist at the University of Szeged in Szeged, Hungary, has uncovered a new type of human brain cell that has never been seen in mice and other well-studied laboratory animals.” Transcriptomic and morphophysiological evidence for a specialized human cortical GABAergic cell type https://www.nature.com/articles/s41593-018-0205-2 “ These rosehip cells show an immunohistochemical profile matching a single transcriptomically defined cell type whose specific molecular marker signature is not seen in mouse cortex. Rosehip cells in layer 1 make homotypic gap junctions, predominantly target apical dendritic shafts of layer 3 pyramidal neurons, and inhibit backpropagating pyramidal action potentials in microdomains of the dendritic tuft.” ____________________ Elements is more than just a science show. Dirty rats versus dirty humans

02:05
The Santa Fe National Forest in New Mexico has placed 224 acres and 200 miles of river shoreline off limits to humans. Ignore this order and suffer a $5,000 fine. In politically correct America the Stupid, rodents enjoy greater freedoms than humans. The Meadow Jumping Mouse was placed on the endangered species list (there around 70 of these rodents) according them privileges to be enjoyed which are denied to their human counterparts. The National Forest Service was established around 1915 to preserve the land for future generations. In 21st America those “future generations” exclude humans and include rodents. The National Forest Service is “Caring for the land and serving the people” to be updated with “…….and serving the rats.” Federal order closing off the area to humans: http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3819757.pdf Map showing the areas closed to humans: http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3819758.pdf Forest Service order closing the areas to humans: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/santafe/news-events/?cid=STELPRD3819831 Related articles: http://www.sfgate.com/news/science/article/Feds-close-part-of-Jemez-Mountains-for-mouse-5814613.php http://www.jemezdailypost.com/content/mouse-closes-mountains http://www.santafenewmexican.com/news/local_news/feds-close-part-of-jemez-mountains-for-mouse/article_b9857085-8b07-57e8-b6cf-7bb50bf6a21a.html Link to Texas Daddy store: http://texas-daddy.shop-pro.jp/ National Forest Service Jemez Mountains Meadow Jumping Mouse endangered species Santa Fe National Forest endangered species act dirty rats rodents propagandabuster Texas Daddy Tony vlog politically correct political correctness animal rights endangered mouse
