MAX Teaching in Action DVD
MAX Teaching in Action is a set of 4 DVDs of actual classroom footage of MAX Teaching in action, filmed with real students and real teachers. All of the reading and writing activities from the book, MAX Teaching with Reading and Writing are demonstrated in classrooms varying from 12th grade career-technical classes to elementary science and social studies classes. All ages and many subject areas are demonstrated in brief 10-15 minute vignettes showing the most salient parts of each of the classes. The focus in each vignette is on two things: 1) what the teacher does to facilitate students of varying ability levels to achieve higher-order thinking about subject matter resulting from their reading and writing activities, and 2) how students behave when they are scaffolded to success with reading, writing, and thinking.

STAT 385@UIUC - Guest Lecture: Max Candocia on "Learning Strategies through Reinforcement Learning"
Title: Learning Strategies through Reinforcement Learning Guest Lecturer: Max Candocia Date: 4/27/2018 Abstract: Reinforcement learning is the optimization of a task using machine learning and repeated simulations. A major application of this is creating artificial intelligences for games. With a proper setup of a reasonable task, human-understandable strategies can be discovered even with complex algorithms. -------------------------------------------------------------- Bio: Max lives in Chicago and works at rMark Bio, Inc., a biotech startup, as a data scientist. He graduated from UIUC in 2013 with a BS in (Engineering) Physics and in 2014 with an MS in Statistics(: Analytics). Since then, he has moved around Illinois and Texas for work. He enjoys learning and most things numeric, so he tends to create many data-related side projects. -------------------------------------------------------------- Resources: Machi AI: https://github.com/mcandocia/machi_ai Splendor AI: https://github.com/mcandocia/machi_ai -------------------------------------------------------------- Social: Website: http://maxcandocia.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/max-candocia-a270b574 GitHub: https://github.com/mcandocia StackOverflow: https://stackoverflow.com/users/1362215/max-candocia Twitter: https://twitter.com/imthestatman

How to Study Effectively for School or College - Top 6 Science-Based Study Skills
How to study effectively with 6 essential skills. Boost your study performance with strategies recommended by science - The ANSWER Method. For free downloadable posters about these six strategies for effective learning, click this link - https://www.dropbox.com/s/sofzb2m3sqzwvlv/6%20Strategies%20for%20Effective%20Learning.pdf?dl=1 This video is a collaboration between The Learning Scientists (http://www.learningscientists.org/) and Memorize Academy (https://www.memorize.academy). EXAMPLES of specific Elaboration questions from MATH You're studying calculus. The topic is “derivatives”. How do derivatives work? Well, they are the rate of the change. How does that work? You take a look at one point, then you take a look at a prior point, over some interval. And then you take the difference divided by the interval. As that interval approaches zero, you have the instantaneous rate of change. Why does this happen? Because “instantaneous” means that the interval is nothing. SCIENCE Imagine you are studying neural communication, maybe in a biology, neuroscience, or psychology class. How does neural communication work? If we look at one neuron, the dendrites receive messages from many other neurons, and then the messages converge in the soma. If there is enough of a positive charge within the soma, then an action potential will occur, and an electrical signal goes down the axon. When the signal reaches the terminal buttons, neurotransmitters release into the synapse where they communicate with the dendrites of the next neuron. Why does this happen? The neurotransmitters are chemicals that allow neurons to communicate with one another. The pattern of activation among different neurons (which neurons fire, how quickly, what neurotransmitters they release) determines the message in your brain. You might then ask, how does the axon work? The axon is a long tail-like structure that produces the electrical signal. How does the signal travel? The axon is covered in myelin sheath, a fatty substance that insulates the axon. The myelin sheath works like the rubber around the cord of an electrical appliance, and it serves to make the electricity travel faster. Why have myelin sheath? Because we need our neurons to be able to send signals fast, since we need to be able to react, make decisions, move quickly, perceive feeling in our skin instantly, etc. Make sure to compare ideas to learn how they are similar and different. For example, an axon and terminal buttons are both parts of a neuron; but, the axon sends an electrical signal while the terminal buttons release chemicals. Both Schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease are related to the neurotransmitter dopamine, but Schizophrenia is the result of too much dopamine while Parkinson’s disease is the result of too little dopamine. Also, try to make connections to your own memories or experiences, and compare ideas to learn how they are similar and different. We already made the connection from myelin sheath on axons to the rubber on cords to electrical appliances. Here is another example: a family member or close friend who suffers from Schizophrenia disease is suffering from too much dopamine. This means that too much dopamine is being released, by the terminal buttons, into the synapse. A doctor could give them a drug to reduce the dopamine in their brain, called a dopamine antagonist. If too much of this drug is used, the patient might begin developing symptoms similar to Parkinson’s disease. How would a dopamine antagonist work? … continue asking yourself elaborative questions! HISTORY Imagine you’re studying World War II, and the attack on Pearl Harbor. You could ask yourself, how did this attack happen? On December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. The attack included Japanese fighter planes, bombers, and torpedo planes. Why did this happen? The Japanese intended to destroy the United States’ Pacific Fleet so that it could not interfere with Japanese operations. Here you could also ask another type of question: What was the result of this historic event? Well, Japanese casualties were light, while they damaged eight U.S. Navy battleships. The Arizona was among those that the Japanese sunk, and was not raised from the shallow water. U.S. aircrafts were also destroyed, and 2,403 Americans were killed (1,178 were injured). Why is this event important? The day after the attack, Roosevelt delivered his Infamy Speech, the United States declared war on Japan, and Japanese-Americans were then relocated to internment camps. You could then go on: how did the U.S. enter the war? How did the Pearl Harbor attack lead up to the release of the atomic bomb? How did the war end? And so on. There are so many ways to explain the idea and add details!

A Simple Trick on How to Save Up A Lot of Money Fast
How to save up money easily for a house or for a new car? Learn a genius hack on how to save more money each month. As a bonus, we'll tell teach you how to safely hide your cash. "If only I could stop spending money on stuff I don’t need, I would buy so many useful things!" Have you ever thought this? Then this video is just for you. RULE 1: Subtract the last digit from each number to get a zero at the end. It’s easier to “zero out” cash into a piggy bank, and you may use a savings account or any other bank account to transfer the money from your card. RULE 2: Save everything that’s left over before payday — "zero out" one more time at the end of the month. For instance, you still have $300 in cash and $1,000 in the bank — just move it to your savings account. TIMESTAMPS «Zero out» your money every evening 0:31 Move any unspent money to your saving account 1:46 What are the advantages of this simple method? 2:05 The worst places to hide your cash: In the backyard 2:41 Under your mattress 2:58 In shopping bags 3:13 In old wallets and handbags 3:27 In laundry baskets 3:40 Behind a picture or photo in a frame 3:58 In safes that are not bolted down 4:13 In drawers and cabinets 4:34 Where to hide your money 4:53 SUMMARY If you feel like you have run out of places to hide your money, try the following suggestions: • Wrap your money in a plastic bag, and tape it to the bottom of the kitchen counter or to the bottom of your kid’s toy box (the best option is to create a false bottom in it). • In a waterproof container stored in the lowest drawer of your refrigerator or freezer. Make sure it doesn’t read "Ice cream" or something else yummy thieves might want to try. • Hide your savings among buttons, threads, and other sewing accessories. Unless thieves suddenly need to sew something, they most probably won’t look for your money in there. • In a pair of old shoes, clothes, or maybe in an old computer that no longer works. Make sure it all looks like junk you have not disposed of yet. "Thrifting Alpha: Using Ensemble Learning To Revitalize Tired Alpha Factors" by Max Margenot
This talk was given by Max Margenot at the Quantopian Meetup in San Francisco on July 18th, 2017. Video work was done by Matt Fisher, http://www.precipitate.media/. Max’s background is in applied mathematics, statistics, and quantitative finance. He runs the online lecture series at Quantopian and is responsible for workshop curriculums and educational content. In addition to having experimented with algorithmic trading of cryptocurrencies and Bayesian estimation of covariance matrices, Max has published work in theoretical mathematics. He works with top universities including Columbia, U Chicago, and Cornell and holds a MS in Mathematical Finance from Boston University. "Thrifting Alpha: Using Ensemble Learning To Revitalize Tired Alpha Factors" Finding alpha is a constant search in algorithmic trading. New alpha factors are always exciting, but sometimes you can come up with new trading signals simply by applying novel aggregation techniques to familiar factors. In this talk we will discuss using ensemble learning methods to combine individual weak signals into stronger factors and assessing their predictive power for long-short equity strategies. Memory fit - How I learnt to exercise my memory | Anastasia Woolmer | TEDxDocklands
Our modern lives hinge on learning from a young age, but wouldn’t it be a lot easier if we first learnt how to learn and remember? Anastasia Woolmer guides us on her journey from a physical to a mental athlete. After a career as a professional Ballet and Contemporary dancer, she completed a university degree with very little high school behind her. Like many of us, she studied without the benefit of memory techniques, just a lot of over preparation and late nights. Anastasia discusses what a dramatic difference memory training has made on her life since then. We can all benefit immensely from directed memory skills and a little practice pays big dividends. This talk reveals that combining the two types of fitness training – mental and physical – helps us to achieve the most out of life. Anastasia is a two times Australian Memory Champion, is the first female to hold this title and has set several Australian memory records along the way. Anastasia is a 2 x Australian Memory Champion and holds several Australian memory records. She is both a physical and mental athlete, with an international career as a professional Ballet and Contemporary dancer. Her love of learning attracted her to memory sports as a path to absorb new information quickly and she now helps others to learn memory techniques. Anastasia is also uniquely able to demonstrate the mental imagery she uses during memorisation. Anastasia believes combining both physical and mental fitness gives us the best chance for a happy and full healthy life. She knows that anyone can train themselves to perform remarkable memory feats and bypass slower conventional learning methods. Use of Deep Learning in Tactical Multi-Asset Strategies with Calvin Yu
In this webinar, we will discuss a theoretical case study done in conjunction with an institutional investor to demonstrate how one can use deep neural networks for tactical asset allocation. Two very different ways of portfolio construction - one based on expected returns and uncertainty and the other which obtains allocations as part of the neural network and optimizes a custom utility function such as portfolio Sharpe - are shared. The objective is to share the process and the nuances involved in practical implementation. Finally, the results show how the deep learning strategies trained in walk-forward manner have comparable performance to traditional framework currently used by CIOs. From this talk, participants will gain a better understanding of how AI strategies can be implemented to assist CIO's with tactical asset allocation decisions, business drivers for allocators when considering an AI-driven approach to asset management, and deployment and scalability related practical challenges for a machine learning strategy. About the Speaker: Calvin Yu is Managing Director and Head of Multi-Asset Solutions at Qplum. Calvin has over 11 years experience in multi-asset investing. Prior to joining Qplum, he worked at Goldman Sachs as Lead Portfolio Manager and Outsourced Chief Investment Officer, managing over $20 billion of institutional assets. Prior to that, he was Vice President at Pacific Global Advisors, an institutional solutions business that was acquired from J.P. Morgan. Calvin is a CFA charterholder and graduated with a Bachelors of Honors Business Administration from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. The missing link in classroom learning | Max Clark | TEDxYCISHK
A current trend in the field of education is that of experiential learning. Many people are trying to convince the world that their method is the best but what most people are not talking about is why these methods are effective. What educator Max Clark suggests is the missing element in classroom teaching that experiential learning can provide is authenticity; an authentic experience is one where the objectives and evaluative feedback are implicit in the endeavor. Max Clark is a teacher of English, Global Perspectives and Theory of Knowledge at YCIS, Hong Kong. He has also taught and worked in school management in Malaysia, Italy, Japan and his native England. He is curious about how, what and why we learn. He likes to make music and things that fly. Workout Plan for Skinny Guys / Hardgainers (THIS BUILDS MUSCLE!)
Get the complete workout plan to build muscle in 90 days http://athleanx.com/x/what-skinny-guys-use-to-add-size Skinny guys and hardgainers have a very difficult time building muscle. Usually the issue is two pronged with both their workouts and nutrition plan to blame for their lack of muscle size. In this video, I’m covering the mistakes made in the workouts and giving you a workout plan for skinny guys that will help you to start adding muscle to your frame without having to sacrifice your low body fat level you likely are starting with. In order to build muscle as a skinny guy you have to look yourself in the mirror and confront your fears first. I know it sounds odd but it is a common problem that sets the roadblock up, preventing you from making any progress. Many hardgainers will fear going to the gym because they don’t want to face the ridicule of the bigger guys around them. That has to stop today. In fact, you’d likely find that if you talked to the majority of these big muscle guys that they would admire your pursuit of change and might even sympathize with you having taken that journey themselves already. Once you get to the gym it’s time to start simplifying your workout plan. The biggest problem with skinny guys is that they try and to more rather than less. It’s an obvious mistake and one that I can see why people make so often. That said, if you are not enhanced and are a natural lifter, doing less is almost always the first step to take rather than trying more. That said, you want to pick just one exercise for each of the six major muscle groups in your body. These are your chest, back, shoulders, legs, and arms. The exercises you choose should be compound in nature and hit multiple muscles at one time. Not just that but these exercises allow you to gradually load up the weight over time as you get stronger. This is why you would pick a barbell curl instead of a concentration curl. Once you identify the exercises you are going to use (my suggestions are provided in the video) then you want to actually lower the weight you might be inclined to try and use. Remember, your discomfort in the gym might make you try and compensate by swinging around weights that you simply cannot command. Don’t do this. Instead, back down on the weight and make sure you can actually lift it with good form and own it. From here, the fun begins. Add weight to the bar on every exercise at every opportunity. Soon you will see that your muscles will grow almost before your eyes. You will gain confidence and you will see muscle growth that will inspire you to keep going. Your only goal at this point should be to be sure you are pushing yourself as hard as you can. Only when you get comfortable being uncomfortable will you see the gains continue to come at a rapid pace. If you are looking for a complete workout plan that helps you to build the foundation of strength needed to pack on muscle size and mass, then head to http://athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System. Start training like an athlete and start looking like one faster than you ever thought before. For more videos on how to build muscle as a skinny guy or how hardgainers can add muscle mass, be sure to subscribe to our channel here on youtube at http://youtube.com/user/jdcav24

B2B Purchasing Negotiation Five Strategies to Reduce Vendor Prices
The following video outlines five purchasing and procurement strategies all geared towards lowering vendor prices and or reducing supply chain and inventory management costs. These strategies are put forth from someone who has worked in sales and marketing for 20 years and wanted to combine the best strategies employed by the best purchasing negotiation teams. In essence, these strategies come from those purchasing and procurement agents I have negotiated with. They include the most successful strategies employed against me. The first includes not tipping your hand and or broadcasting your needs too soon in the negotiation process with a salesperson. Instead, nail down your price and then use your requests, needs and or concession to reduce pricing. For instance, agree upon a final price and then ask for a discount or reduced price for 1) prepaying total or a portion of your purchase, 2) prompt payment incentives like net-10 day terms 1 to 2 percent discount or 3) increasing volumes or committing to long-term supply contracts or orders. The second tip includes avoiding using veiled threats - which are simply threats you have no intention of following through on. When you threaten vendors too much without ever following through on a threat, then you are simply training them not to take your threats seriously. Third, match a high-value concession for a high-value concession. In this case, come up with a list of requests and or "must-haves" as outcomes from the price negotiation. When the salesperson makes a request, make sure you counter with one of your own of equal value. Fourth, when it comes to getting price reductions from a salesperson, you have to sometimes appeal to their better nature. In this case, add a little personal touch to your negotiations. Ask for a price reduction by outlining the pressures and demands that are placed upon you as a purchasing agent. In this case, you have to attain a certain inventory cost structure so ask your salesperson to help you attain that. Finally, keep your vendor honest by constantly going out for competitive bids. Even the best of vendors can become complacent. However, if they know you know as much about pricing in the market as they do, then those vendors will be less likely to take advantage of you.

Texas Holdem Poker Strategy - Preflop Strategy - Pre Flop Poker
In this video, I cover the basic preflop strategy for Texas Holdem poker. Preflop poker hands for Full Ring and Shorthanded play are included. Learning basic poker strategies start preflop, and as a beginner, you should learn these preflop hands before you learn anything else. Poker is a complex game and the hands you play preflop will affect how you proceed with your post-flop strategy. This creates the fundamental baseline of your overall poker strategy. Play tight in early position and open up your starting hand range as you get closer to the button. While this advice may be very basic it is still not understood or implemented correctly by many players. By mastering this fundamental aspect of poker you will be ahead of many other players at the poker table. Using the strategy outlines in this video, which includes raising or folding only pre-flop, you will avoid the pitfalls of many players who limp their weak and medium strength hands pre-flop. I hope you enjoy this video! For more of my content follow my channel on Twitch! https://www.twitch.tv/unexceptionalrounder
