Bitcoin Q&A: Bitcoin vs. blockchain

04:27
What is the difference between Bitcoin and "blockchain"? Blockchains are only one of the foundational technologies. In an attempt to co-opt the interest around Bitcoin, companies and governments are trying to circle the square by creating centralised and permissioned versions while entirely missing the point: decentralization. This is part of a talk which took place at Pebble Beach for the Capgemini CXO Forum on November 1-3rd 2017 in Monterey, California. Bitcoin Q&A: "Blockchain, not Bitcoin"

07:12
Why is the “blockchain, not Bitcoin” line of thinking wrong? What is the purpose of blockchains? Can blockchains or special purpose cryptocurrencies be used for debt and credit systems? Will the role of fiat be reduced to this? These questions were part of the monthly live Patreon Q&A session on March 31st and the (rescheduled) April session on May 5th. Bitcoin Q&A: Inspiring cryptocurrency projects

07:53
How can we get more women involved with cryptocurrencies? What are the most inspiring projects that encourage people to think beyond the current system and explore the innovative potential of the technology? Tired of hearing about the latest scammy ICO? Instead, here are some inspiring real-world projects using cryptocurrencies for good! 1. Fereshteh Forough's "Code to Inspire" (@CodeToInspire) educational initiative, the first coding school for girls in Afghanistan, which uses Bitcoin for financial support & autonomy due to a lack of payment processors and high fees in the country (http://codetoinspire.org) More: https://bitcoinmagazine.com/articles/code-to-inspire-bitcoin-gives-afghan-women-financial-freedom-1460652348/ 2. The BitGive Foundation (@BitGiveOrg), a nonprofit organization that runs a program called GiveTrack, which allows donors to trace bitcoin transactions on a public platform in real time to see how funds are spent, ensure they reach their final destination, and track the results generated from contributions. (https://www.bitgivefoundation.org). I would also like to see more people addressing the issue of international remittances for migrant workers. Sending money home is a big business where a lot of money is going towards paying fees, about the same amount that is being spent in foreign aid. Why not just let people keep more of their own money? Doing so also generates more economic activity in return. If the informal cryptocurrency remittance market becomes really successful, Western Union will probably go out of business, but -- at least here -- not a single tear will be shed. This is part of a talk which took place on July 7th 2017 at a Bloktex event hosted by the Wisma BeeOn Group in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: https://antonopoulos.com/event/the-future-of-money-kuala-lumpur-malaysia/ RELATED: Remittances and smuggling in Venezuela - https://youtu.be/RRXecXfWARw Design for the disabled and disempowered - https://youtu.be/VlcHyl_rPVM Bitcoin, Payment Security, and Consumer Protection - https://youtu.be/qMkGfB8X58o Crossing the chasm of theoretical vs. real need - https://youtu.be/yIR0OBEAaUE How long until mainstream adoption? - https://youtu.be/y3cKBDBabtA The end of vampire-squid financing - https://youtu.be/yyXOQG5iNWo Andreas M. Advanced Bitcoin Scripting -- Part 1: Transactions & Multisig

59:58
This is the first part of a more technical talk where Andreas explores Bitcoin script, with examples from the 2nd edition of Mastering Bitcoin, focusing on the use of conditional statements, flow control, guard clauses and time locks. The examples will include advanced multi-signature scripts, hash time lock contracts and asymmetric revocable commitments. Then he answers questions about Bitcoin's quirky bugs, where Bitcoin differs from Ethereum at a scripting level, how SegWit works, how consensus rules change, and whether Bitcoin is more than just a currency. Bitcoin Q&A: Inflation and debt systems

12:04
How do you see the roles of debt and inflation changing in society with the advent of cryptocurrencies? Does Bitcoin have the best monetary policy? Bitcoin and many other cryptocurrencies are not debt instruments, whereas most of the popular, state-run forms of currency today are. You can't do fractional reserve banking or issue debt with bitcoin. Airdrops / fork coins are a form of supply inflation. How do you explain the different approaches to cryptocurrencies from China and Japan? The first question is from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on January 27th 2018. Bitcoin Q&A: Job opportunities with cryptocurrencies

07:31
Job opportunities provided by the Bitcoin ecosystem, beyond software development. When you change one of the most fundamental technologies (money), anything and everything that is touched by it will be affected. The user composition of the Bitcoin community is becoming more diverse and the mainstream consciousness is changing over time. There are dentists, hairdressers, and cab drivers who have now heard of Bitcoin. We really need graphic designers, UX/UI designers, and customer service people to contribute. We need accountants who are willing to learn to understand this new form of money. Artists can now bypass the intermediaries and connect directly to their audience. Bitcoin Q&A: Altcoins and specialisation

07:06
What other crypto-assets and technologies interest you besides Bitcoin and Ethereum? I'm interested in the cryptocurrencies that are pioneering privacy and anonymity, such as Monero and Zcash. I'm interested in resource-sharing ones as well. It is less likely that they will be eclipsed by Bitcoin and its second layers as long as they maintain that privacy-conscious differentiation. Is Litecoin still "the silver to bitcon's [digital] gold"? Litecoin often follows the core roadmap, but it has filled a niche of rapid development that acts as a testing ground for innovations that may end up in Bitcoin. I think there is room for multiple cryptocurrencies that have less adoption overall but are "apex" in certain categories. Bitcoin: Where the Laws of Mathematics Prevail

23:48
In this talk, Andreas speaks about Bitcoin as a system of commerce that is the culmination of decades of research into cryptography and digital currencies, and how it achieves digital scarcity through proof-of-work and decentralized consensus. He argues that Bitcoin is powerful because it is where the laws of mathematics prevail to deliver robust security, financial autonomy, and censorship resistance. Bitcoin Q&A: Passphrases and seed storage

14:14
Do passphrases protect against leaks or compromises of mnemonic seed words? Why are brain wallets usually insecure? Why should you not "roll your own crypto" and promote creative schemes that deviate from the standards (like BIP39), without at least getting peer review and testing from other developers, cryptographers, or security researchers? Bitcoin Q&A: Wealth distribution statistics

05:44
What are your thoughts on wealth distribution / concentration in Bitcoin? Addresses are not people! The majority of addresses are used anonymously / pseudo-anonymously, so clustering is very difficult. Exchanges or payment processors may be holding the funds of hundreds of thousands of people in only a few addresses; at the same time, a single person could be controlling thousands of addresses with very small amounts, or a single address may be a multi-sig that is controlled by more than one person. Cryptocurrencies in general do have poor Gini coefficients (i.e. unequal distribution) when compared to society as a whole, especially because we are still in the very early stages of adoption. However there is no sound evidence to support most of the internal wealth distribution statistics being published in the media. The implications of large numbers of bitcoin being held in very few addresses has greater implications for the storage security of custodians -- and the risk of an expensive hack -- than it does for wealth distribution. Bitcoin Q&A: Operating a business with cryptocurrency

Bitcoin Q&A: The value of proof-of-work

14:30
Can a blockchain exist without miners, proof-of-work, or blocks? What are the implications for security, trustlessness, and decentralisation? Not all distributed ledgers are blockchains. What is the influence of alternative energy generation on mining in proof-of-work cryptocurrencies? Should we use alternative algorithms that generate "useful work" in addition to mining cryptocurrencies? The hard promises that Bitcoin provides are valuable and useful in themselves. What is the difference between proof-of-work and proof-of-stake? Note: These sessions were recorded live using Google Hangouts. The audio and video may be slightly out of sync at some points. These questions are from the MOOC sessions 7.2 and 8.2, covering the Byzantine Generals' Problem, which took place on February 26th 2017 and September 15th 2017 respectively. What is Consensus: Rules without Rulers

29:21
Who is in charge of Bitcoin? Why is it so hard to change the rules? The governance model of Bitcoin, where there can be transparent and neutral rules without rulers, without regulators, is confusing to most people. It is a natural human inclination not only to appeal to authority but to see the absence of a leader as an invitation, a "job opening." Bitcoin has resisted this for nine years, but it is still immature and trying to find its potential. What the failure of SegWit2x demonstrated was not that this group one and that group lost, but that consensus is an overwhelming majority system. Without it, you are unlikely to succeed. The question is not whether we will scale, but how. The battles we've faced so far are tiny compared to what lies ahead. The choice you all make between convenience and liberty, between safety and freedom, will open up opportunities for billions tomorrow. Bitcoin Q&A: Will governments ban cryptocurrencies?

07:36
Will governments or international government organisations implement their own centralised cryptocurrencies and ban the mining or ownership of open decentralised ones like Bitcoin? If your government is against freedom of association, expression, commerce, innovation, job creation, is it a democracy? Are you free? You must resist, not only through your choices about which governments get elected but about using alternative systems. People in places like Venezuela are making that choice every day, breaking the law to feed their family. This is a much bigger issue than Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies. The first question is from a talk which took place on December 3rd 2016 at the Coinscrum {MiniCon}, hosted by Imperial College in London, England: https://www.meetup.com/coinscrum/events/235709468/ Watch the full talk here: https://youtu.be/Bu5Mtvy97-4 The second question is part of a talk which took place on July 7th 2017 at a Bloktex event hosted by the Wisma BeeOn Group in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: https://antonopoulos.com/event/the-future-of-money-kuala-lumpur-malaysia/ Watch the full talk here: https://youtu.be/HaJ1hvon0E0 RELATED: Bitcoin: Where the Laws of Mathematics Prevail - https://youtu.be/HaJ1hvon0E0 Separation of money and state - https://youtu.be/jGmtRA9S7_Y Could governments take over exchanges? - https://youtu.be/9PrJQeKl9w4 Could a state-sponsored 51% attack work? - https://youtu.be/KUd8ZGgm6Qo Can cryptocurrencies support terrorism? - https://youtu.be/Ryz-pXbsojU Is Bitcoin a democracy? - https://youtu.be/TC3Hq76UT5g Is the centralisation of mining in China a problem? - https://youtu.be/GGwHIHBsjbU The end of vampire-squid financing - https://youtu.be/yyXOQG5iNWo The Currency Wars and Bitcoin's Neutrality - https://youtu.be/Bu5Mtvy97-4 Global financial crisis (GFC) - https://youtu.be/JU3gNC_ZPKM Why I earn bitcoins instead of buying them - https://youtu.be/Ci7TyD8jETY Remittances and smuggling in Venezuela - https://youtu.be/RRXecXfWARw Andreas M. Bitcoin Q&A: What is the role of nodes?

08:17
The role that full nodes play in security of the network. People focus a lot on mining, which has a fundamental role in the network but is not necessarily the most interesting feature of the constellation of technologies involved. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the most essential protocol underlying the world's routing system, and you use it every single day without knowing it, just as you are oblivious to the vast filtration system allowing you to drink clean water from a fountain. A node is a computer that is participating the global peer-to-peer Bitcoin network. They propagate transactions and blocks everywhere. Full nodes act independently as authoritative verifiers. Onion routing. Double-spending protection. Levels of isolation for untrustworthy nodes. Why would you run one? To be in control of your money - your keys, your money. You don't trust anyone else to tell you what the truth is, you cross-check every claim yourself. Be part of the revolution in money. This is part of a talk which took place at the JW Marriott Sahar (International Airport) on March 26th 2017 in Mumbai, India: https://www.townscript.com/e/bitcoin-talk-by-the-world-famous-andreas-antonopoulos-203132 RELATED: Lightning, full nodes, and miners - https://youtu.be/dlJG4OHdJzs Hard Promises, Soft Promises: Promoting Autonomy instead of Authority https://youtu.be/UJSdMFPjW8c Innovations in wallet design - https://youtu.be/K5Ei3_D8LQ8 How to get people to care about security - https://youtu.be/Ji1lS9NMz1E Andreas M. What is happening with the Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs)? Why might they be a bad idea for decentralisation, consensus, and even the price? Bitcoin Q&A: Reflections on the last five years

07:12
What is the most significant thing you've changed your mind on with respect to cryptocurrencies in the last five years? Making predictions with certainty in a new and fast-paced industry; under-estimating the resilience of Bitcoin; the social attack / argument surface. If you were to make one change to Bitcoin, what would it be? I would like to see more implementations of privacy features, which is already happening. However, no one person gets to make changes to Bitcoin. There is not much else I would change in the original design; I think it would be hubris even for me to say I can do it better. There has been a "next Bitcoin" that fixed supposed fatal flaws ever year since the beginning of Bitcoin, but none have superseded its design choices aimed at security, censorship resistance, and decentralisation. (And no, market capitalisation is not a great measurement for comparison.) This is a question from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on February 24th 2018. Bitcoin Q&A: Can cryptocurrencies support terrorism?

01:59
Can cryptocurrencies be used to support terrorist groups? First we'd have to displace their most important funding mechanisms, which are the US dollar and oil (some of which our governments gave to them directly). We live in a world where criminals use technology (money, telephones, shoes), but we don't ban those technologies just because criminals use them. Most of humanity will use them for food, sanitation, healthcare etc. It is a fake promise that we're going to stop terrorism by controlling everyone's money, because all it does is exclude billions of people from the global financial system. Bitcoin Q&A: Hot vs. cold wallets

04:59
The dangers of custodial accounts; not your keys, not your money. Security practices for long-term vs. short-term storage, trading, and transacting. I don't leave any currency (crypto or fiat) in an exchange for longer than 15 minutes. I use these cryptocurrencies to pay my bills, so I transact very often. So far, I've only ever lost small amounts of bitcoin through stupid mistakes. 1. Don't leave your money on exchanges longer than you have to. If you day-trade, make sure you understand the risk that entails. 2. Organise a tiered storage system of hot and cold wallets, factoring in the amount of bitcoin you're storing, how you plan to use it (soon or not for a long time), and what security risks you're willing to take with each tier. 3. Use cold storage (i.e. paper wallets) for large amounts or for bitcoins you don't plan on using for a longer period of time. 4. Use hardware wallets that are PIN or password-protected 5. Use multi-signature multi-party or multi-factor wallets for carrying out your weekly business transactions. 6. Use hot wallets (ex. mobile wallets) for petty cash, or if you are the Oprah of cryptocurrency. Bitcoin Q&A: Multi-signature and distributed storage

17:58
What happens when wallets (personal or at an exchange) are hacked? What is "sweeping" with regards to private keys? After a hack, is it possible to track the stolen bitcoin and identify the hacker? How do you keep bitcoin safe in a group / corporate environment? Is it possible to create a multi-signature setup with Trezor and Electrum? Could passphrases be brute-forced? What is happening with browser extension deprecation? You will have to evaluate which tools are the best based on the amount of cryptocurrency you own, your circumstances, and your threat model. Bitcoin Q&A: The Switzerland of currencies

08:24
Can cryptocurrencies have an inflationary monetary policy? How do cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin fit into the global currency wars? Initially there wasn't enough demand in the economy, but as the reward diminishes over time, bitcoin will have a deflationary monetary policy and simulate a scarce resource like gold. But you can simulate whatever monetary policy you want. Digital currencies are now part of the currency wars, because they are giving people all over the world a choice to exit the currency wars, one of the most powerful choices you can make. Within the currency, Bitcoin will act as the Switzerland of currencies. Even if governments start making them illegal to use, this does not destroy demand. In practice, cryptocurrency use has gone up after a country has banned it. Governments are failing in their role of delivering the fundamental functions of currency. When there is a dramatic spiral in an economy, the state takes the entire country hostage. People often haven't thought about money as a language or a technology, constructs that can be created and improved by anyone. So what if you can exit? It changes everything. Bitcoin Q&A: Schnorr signatures and the privacy roadmap

16:29
How important are privacy improvements to Bitcoin in the roadmap? How will second layers and atomic swaps help with this? When will Schnorr signatures / signature aggregation be added to Bitcoin? What are Taproot and Graftroot? Will it be done through a soft or hard fork? Should we keep transaction transparency instead of adding privacy features? Watch Pieter Wuille's presentation - https://youtu.be/YSUVRj8iznU Schnorr signature BIP - https://github.com/sipa/bips/blob/bip-schnorr/bip-schnorr.mediawiki CORRECTION / CLARIFICATION: At 3:47, I mention that Schnorr signatures had to overcome "patent encumbrances" and guessed that the patent expired somewhere around 2010. The precise expiration date of the U.S. Patent (No. 4,995,082) was February 2008. At 4:22, I say that ECDSA and EC-Schnorr are based on the difficulty of solving the discrete logarithm problem over a prime-order field. While this is true for the digital signature algorithm (DSA), ECDSA and Schnorr are based on the discrete log problem over an elliptic curve group. (h/t Daira Hopwood) These questions were part of the monthly live Patreon Q&A session in July and the Denver event as part of 'The Internet of Money Tour' at the Hilton Denver Inverness, which took place on July 28th and August 6th 2018 respectively. Decentralized Truth

19:53
In this talk, Andreas explores the confusion and instinctive disbelief from newcomers about how open, decentralized cryptocurrencies can scale and grow in value without the finality of approval from authorities. He also emphasises the importance of "don't trust, verify" and why we should become accustomed to uncertainty, so that we may individually discover authenticity and truth. Markets are emergent aggregations of subjective decisions. Bitcoin Q&A: How much bitcoin do you have?

03:23
How much bitcoin do you have? What percentage of our wealth should be in bitcoins? A percentage that reflects your understanding of how the technology works and your ability to absorb the risk that it entails. However it also depends on what country you're in, because the volatility and risk in bitcoin may be better than your national currency. This is not a recommendation to invest; I have dedicated to career and my passion, I could lose all of it and still have everything else. Invest in education instead of speculation. Note: Yes, I know - this video is now out of date. The advice about risk tolerance and focusing on education still stands. Bitcoin Q&A: Offline transactions and fault tolerance

05:06
Is it possible to do a bitcoin transaction without using the internet? How do transactions from paper wallets and physical bitcoins work? Does this solve the Byzantine Generals' Problem? NOTE: OpenDimes utilize some additional security measures, especially regarding key generation, which paper wallets and other physical bitcoins do not. When sealed, the public key is accessible and you are able to check the balance, but you cannot access the private key without unsealing, i.e. breaking part of the hardware device. Bitcoin Q&A: Price volatility and store-of-value

08:30
Does price volatility negatively impact bitcoin's use as a store of value? What contributes to volatility? Are there cartels in the cryptocurrency markets, manipulating prices? Why did so many people buy into bitcoin at the end of 2017? These questions were part of the monthly live Patreon Q&A session on March 31st. Bitcoin Q&A: Nonces, mining, and quantum computing

15:24
Who generates the nonce? What makes it random? How is nonce-guessing important to the competitive process of mining? What happens if the hashing algorithm (SHA-256) was compromised? Is quantum computing a threat? More on nonces and the mining process: https://github.com/bitcoinbook/bitcoinbook/blob/8ae3c056fb257111bda8883d9d204e8476f9870c/ch09.asciidoc More about the SHA-1 collision: https://security.googleblog.com/2017/02/announcing-first-sha1-collision.html More about SHA-1 and Bitcoin: https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/75135/is-sha-1-used-in-bitcoin CORRECTION: At 5:53, I described what a collision was. However, the definition I outlined was actually for a pre-image attack, which is distinct from collision attacks. Bitcoin Q&A: Fungibility, privacy, anonymity

12:29
Is Bitcoin as anonymous as cash? Cash is still more anonymous than Bitcoin, which is pseudonymous. However, Bitcoin will become more anonymous and there are a number of other related cryptocurrencies which you can move in and out of to increase your privacy under certain conditions. The conference on Bitcoin scaling in Milan addressed strengthening privacy and fungibility. I'm a strong believer in financial privacy. Fungibility in Bitcoin, creating blacklists are expensive, common laws "receiving stolen property" and fungibility of fiat. Discount rates, bad money chasing out good money. Gresham's law in India. Human graphs, six degrees of Kevin Bacon. How easily bitcoins are tainted. Lightning Network. The trade-offs for privacy and anonymity. Privacy is inefficient and costly, it takes commitment and sacrifice to implement, but being able to serve that community is very important. Some people think that trade-off is one worth paying because it pays back in the currency of freedom, and there are many places in the world where the trade-off is very easy. You never really appreciate freedom until you don't have it; for most people, privacy and freedom will not be issues until they start feeling their loss, and by that time it's usually too late. The first question is part of a talk which took place on October 19th 2016 at the Bitcoin Wednesday Meetup in Amsterdam, Netherlands: https://www.meetup.com/BitcoinWednesday/events/234498117/ Watch the full talk here: https://youtu.be/P6F1vTG_hA0 The second question is from a talk which took place at the Silicon Valley Bitcoin meetup on April 11th 2017 at the Plug and Play Tech Center (@PlugandPlayTC) in Sunnyvale, California: https://www.meetup.com/Silicon-Valley-Bitcoin-Users/events/233760417/ Watch the full talk here: https://youtu.be/i_wOEL6dprg The third question is from a talk which took place during the 3rd Hackers Congress at Paralelní Polis (30th of September - 2nd of October) in Prague. #HCPP16 Watch the full talk here: https://youtu.be/n2yD1PSWBU0 RELATED: How is fungibility tied to privacy? - https://youtu.be/VuI-8EwqIS8 How do we protect privacy when bitcoin is traceable? - https://youtu.be/PaNDHsix8cs Privacy, Identity, Surveillance and Money - https://youtu.be/Vcvl5piGlYg Why we should resist financial surveillance - https://youtu.be/KBFedmrDTQw The future of digital money - Open Blockchains or Dystopia? - https://youtu.be/Z3oArEyen6M Why KYC is dangerous - Microviolations of Privacy As Payment - https://youtu.be/rwF7nMWUjBs The Lightning Network - https://youtu.be/vPnO9ExJ50A Does MimbleWimble enhance privacy? - https://youtu.be/paOAgR3LuGI Zcash in the cryptocurrency ecosystem - https://youtu.be/j8ILYfIm_G0 Who is Satoshi Nakamoto? - https://youtu.be/1iEv-gUZNx4 Andreas M. Bitcoin Q&A: Mixing services

06:49
How do mixing services work? What are CoinJoin transactions? How much could they improve privacy or anonymity in Bitcoin? CORRECTION: At 05:46, I mentioned 'Ricochet' as a coin mixing service. This is incorrect. Ricochet adds extra hops to your transaction (https://www.samouraiwallet.com/ricochet). I was thinking of Whirlpool, which is a ZeroLink implementation by Samourai Wallet (https://github.com/Samourai-Wallet/Whirlpool).
