HR Basics: Human Resource Policy
HR Basics is a series of short courses, designed to highlight what you need to know about a particular human resource management topic. In today’s HR Basics, we explore developing and managing human resource policies, creating an effective employee handbook. Human resource policy serve as guidelines and standards on the approach an organization intends to adopt in managing its people. Human resource policies state the intent of the organization and represent specific guidelines on various matters concerning employment. A good HR policy provides generalized guidance on the approach adopted by the organization, and therefore its employees, concerning various aspects of employment. Policies serve as a reference point when decisions are being made about an organization's workforce. In this course we will explore strategies for the successful development and management of your human resource policies. Employee policy begins with careful development of the right policies for your organization. Then, strong management of your policy ensures consistency in people management from implementation through administration of your policy. When developed and managed appropriately, human resource policy preempts misunderstandings between employees and employers about their rights and obligations in the workplace.

Employee Handbooks
Employee handbooks are an important tool for communicating information about workplace culture, benefits, attendance, pay practices, safety issues, discipline, and other critical information for employees, and it can help prevent employment lawsuits. An employee handbook is a physical or electronic manual that explains a company’s essential policies, procedures, and employee benefits. Handbooks are sometimes written in a formal legalistic fashion but are more effective when written so that employees can easily understand the contents. Using more common language can make the handbook more readable and usable. To communicate and discuss HR information, a growing number of firms provide employee handbooks electronically using an intranet, which enables employees to access policies at any time. It also allows changes in policies to be made electronically rather than distributed as paper copies. Additionally, the handbook can be linked to related information that makes accessing details easier for employees. A sensible approach is to first develop sound HR policies and employee handbooks to communicate them and then have legal counsel review the language contained in the handbook.

Human Resource Management System (HRMS)
A human resource management system (HRMS) or human resource information system (HRIS), refers to the systems and processes at the intersection between human resource management (HRM) and information technology. It merges HRM as a discipline and in particular its basic HR activities and processes with the information technology field, whereas the programming of data processing systems evolved into standardized routines and packages of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software. On the whole, these ERP systems have their origin on software that integrates information from different applications into one universal database. The linkage of its financial and human resource modules through one database is the most important distinction to the individually and proprietary developed predecessors, which makes this software application both rigid and flexible. The function of human resources (HR) departments is generally administrative and common to all organizations. Organizations may have formalized selection, evaluation, and payroll processes. Efficient and effective management of "human capital" progressed to an increasingly imperative and complex process. The HR function consists of tracking existing employee data which traditionally includes personal histories, skills, capabilities, accomplishments and salary. To reduce the manual workload of these administrative activities, organizations began to electronically automate many of these processes by introducing specialized human resource management systems. HR executives rely on internal or external IT professionals to develop and maintain an integrated HRMS. Before the client--server architecture evolved in the late 1980s, many HR automation processes were relegated to mainframe computers that could handle large amounts of data transactions. In consequence of the high capital investment necessary to buy or program proprietary software, these internally developed HRMS were limited to organizations that possessed a large amount of capital. The advent of client--server, application service provider, and software as a service (SaaS) or human resource management systems enabled increasingly higher administrative control of such systems.

I Wanna Be a Human Resources Officer · A Day In The Life Of A Human Resources Officer
Hans goes behind the scenes to find out what being a Human Resource Officer entails. Check out more information about a career in Human Resources here: https://studentedge.org/career-life/find-a-career/human-resources-officer Want to see more career videos from Student Edge? ↓ Click here http://s-edg.com/careervideos G'day, Hans here. Now look there are two types of people in this world, those that organize things and the rest of us are just kind of do what they say but if you think you're good with people and you like organizing things maybe human resources could be a career for you. We're here at the Department of Mines to find out what it's all about. You hear the term human resources all the time but it's a pretty obscure and confusing job title. All i know is that it involves dealing with lots of people which is why I'm here at one of the biggest people machines in WA, the Department of Mines and Petroleum to find out exactly what a human resources officer does. Great to meet you Alyce. Well let's start with everything, I need to know if you're working in Human Resources what do you do? So pretty much we work with the employees right through from application to retirement and that could be anything from looking after their safety to training to providing wellness programs or diversity events. So you follow someone's career basically from the beginning right through the end. Yeah while they're in that specific organization. Sure and ok well let's start at the beginning how you came to be in the job. What was your particular path? Where did you study how are you here today? I studied the ECU I studied a bachelor of business and I did a major in human resource management and from that I engaged in lots of different work experience, internship placements I put my name on the templates here at this department and they asked me to come back and work on my initial project. Okay, talk me through a day a typical day of yours when you turn up what do you get up to? First thing I do is look at my emails to make sure there's no employees that are concerned about any issues. That's the first thing you need to get to you need to reply to them quickly. I also because I'm the wellness coordinator I do a lot of events and presentations so i might be one day I might be booking in a presentation I'm checking that staff have RSVP'd properly that kind of thing. We also organize occupational safety and health inductions for new staff so i might be sending out invites. Okay, it's time for you to give us the edge. Can you do that? Absolutely question number one, just quickly from school to what you do now what's the process? Definitely finish high school and an excellent way to increase your opportunities then enroll in either a human resource management course at there's a number of different institutions that offer it or you could do a degree in business and get a a major in human resources or even a psychology degree. Question 2 if I want to be really successful in human resources what characteristics do i need? Definitely a good people person, you need to love working with people, also excellent communication skills that's a big one you need to always be talking with people and also being able to say the same thing to everybody being consistent with your advice to give throughout the organization. And question number three, if you could have done one thing differently but still end up exactly where you are today what would you have done there? Good question i'm quite happy with the path I took but I will say definitely being a little bit more comfortable about asking questions and seeking advice. Well Alyce, thank you so much for talking me through it I now know what it means to work in human resources. Thank you very much it's been really fun. Well there you go that's just the tip of the iceberg of what it means to work in human resources. If you want to get involved you want more info you gotta get onto https://studentedge.org and don't forget if you really keen about it get out there network and meet people.

HR Basics: Sexual Harassment
HR Basics is a series of short courses, designed to highlight what you need to know about a particular human resource management topic. In today’s HR Basics, we explore how to prevent and correct sexual harassment in the workplace. Sexual harassment is a form of unlawful sex discrimination that can occur in a variety of circumstances. Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when this conduct explicitly or implicitly affects an individual's employment; unreasonably interferes with an individual's work performance; or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment. Sexual harassment is illegal. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (Title VII) prohibits harassment of an employee based on race, color, sex, religion, or national origin. Harassment violates federal law if it involves discriminatory treatment. Employers should develop strategies for preventing and correcting sexual harassment in the workplace. Whatever form it takes, prevention is the best tool to eliminate sexual harassment, and it must be a priority for the employer to step in to stop it when it happens. Taking steps to eliminate sexual harassment in the workplace promotes a healthy and productive work environment, and helps defend an employer against liability of unlawful harassment. Prevention is the best tool to eliminate sexual harassment in the workplace. Swift corrective action restores a positive work environment when harassment occurs.

Human Resources - How to Annoy HR Managers
Human Resources - How to Annoy HR Managers - top tips on annoying HR managers and other responsible for human resources management from Mark Walsh of Integration Training. Thanks to my clients, Twitter followers and fellow CIPD members who contributed with this. http://integrationtraining.co.uk Moan! Got a problem at work? Bring it to HR whether they can solve it or not, this is your first stop for a good gripe, whinge and moan. They're "the people people" they can take it. Ignore any advice they give. Equally never make responsible complaints at a time when HR can help but wait until taking legal action. HR managers are magicians with powers over the law, other employees, insurance agencies and CEOs -- so always complain to get the magic on your side! Know Tabloid Law and Work The System Get your knowledge of employment law from papers, the internet and TV and quote this to make your trip to a massage parlour in Amsterdam an acceptable expense and your unofficial duvet days seem entirely reasonable. Work the system as much as possible using every PC technique in the book, know your "rights" and always say "my friend is a lawyer". Apply for a Job Like This... First don't read the instructions in the advertisement, then apply in text speak/ bad spelling/ capitals with no covering letter when you clearly do not meet the essential criteria (which you haven't read). NB: Agencies can be used to help with this, if you work for one HR like to be called daily. As a candidate, turn up late for the interview and know nothing about the organisation. If a manager recruit your mates, old school friends and relatives not those who can do the job. Use Management Jargon  (or refuse to understand their's) "delayering, rightsizing, leverage, disconnect, synergy, blue sky thinking and cross fertilisation" as examples. Add your own in the comments. Fluff Them HR may seem an integral part of the business team but we all know they are the fluffy, touchy feely hippies that doesn't really have any financial merit so remind them of this at any opportunity! HR is easy, anyone could do it! Oh, and because they're so fluffy get them to have your difficult conversations, make your complaints and do the firing for you. Training and Conferences Book onto expensive training HR has taken time to organise and then don't show up -- heh you're busy! If there's a conference in central London or some exotic city show up late and then leave at lunch to do a bit of shopping and see some old friends and relatives. Only jerks don't take the perks!

There are 13 HR policies and or procedures that every business ought to have. 1. Job Specification and personal profiles: 2. Contracts of Employment: 3. Managing Probation Periods: 4. Performance Management: 5 . Discipline and Dismissal Policy 6. Grievance Procedure: 7. Sickness Absence & Sick Pay: This policy, which is apt for inclusion in the contract of employment, sets out your rules for notifying absence due to sickness or incapacity, whether the employee can self-certify their absence and, if so, for how long, and what payment they will be entitled to during any such periods of absence. 8. Holiday entitlement: All full-time employees in the UK are entitled to at least 5.6 weeks paid holidays in a year. This is capped at 28 days, which can be inclusive of statutory Bank Holidays and public holidays. These are sometimes called Working Time or WTR holidays. If you give more than the statutory minimum holidays, you can set out rules for carrying over unused holidays into the next leave year. Be aware, however, that the WTR holidays cannot be carried over. 9. I.T. usage: Especially with the temptations of social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, and the Internet, it is best to let your employees know clearly and in advance what I.T. usage is and is not acceptable. This policy should also cover employees using their own devices either during normal working hours or in the course of their work. 10. Data Protection Policy: This is an important policy. It is not just about what data you store, including personal data and sensitive personal data, but how and where you store it, how and where it is processed, and how you safeguard it. Failure to protect this data could not only lead to a huge loss of customer goodwill, but also to a fine that is big enough, potentially, to seriously affect your company's future. 11. Equal Opportunities: The Equality Act 2010 brought together in one place all the separate pieces of UK legislation relating to discrimination and harassment. It is very important to make sure you know and understand the obligations on your business, and for your employees to know what they should do as well as what they should not do or say. 12. Appraisal Policy: Many businesses, especially smaller enterprises, consider a formal appraisal policy as being optional. I disagree. A good appraisal policy helps both you and your employee identify their weaknesses and enables you to devise an appropriate training programme to support them in making any necessary improvements. Such a policy also gives you an objective basis for considering pay reviews. 13. The make-weight: The requirements of health and safety legislation permeate all aspects of employment from choosing a piece of workplace equipment, risk assessing a task, to reporting accidents at work. As a legal minimum, you should have a health and safety policy statement. This is the basic information telling staff what you, and they, must do to make sure your business complies with health and safety law. Health and safety policies are job, activity, and site specific. Because of this, it is common for businesses to incorporate their health and safety policy into their staff handbook by reference. These 13 HR policies and procedures are the very minimum you need to have in place to ensure that your business is compliant.
