Alarmed by the nonsensical ideas of Transactional Analysis, Patrick Vermeren set out on a mission to reveal the truth about the many HR theories, models and questionnaires. The academic literature revealed that most HR practices (in recruitment, assessment, development, coaching…) are very problematic and some even dangerous. In this Talk valid alternatives are presented. Patrick Vermeren has been active as a consultant, trainer and coach since 1996. He built on his experience at major Belgian banks ( Cera and Dexia) and an American multinational ( Procter & Gamble). Since he joined Perco he advises HR professionals and he guides groups and individuals in the areas of leadership, coaching and facilitating decision making in groups ( participation). He also assists CEOs, managers and high potentials through training and personal coaching. Adidas 0:52 The current logo is three stripes at an angle which together form a triangle. This symbolizes a mountain, which in turn represents the challenges that all sportsmen have to overcome day after day. Apple 1:21 Rob Janoff, the designer who came up with the world-famous Apple company logo, explained his idea in one of his interviews. He bought a bag of apples, placed them in a bowl, and spent time drawing them for a week, trying to break the image down into something simple. Vaio 1:58 The first two letters of the Vaio logo symbolize an analogue wave. The last two are similar to the numbers 1 and 0 — that is, symbols of a digital signal. Amazon 2:14 The orange arrow is similar to a smile because the company wants its customers to be satisfied. Toblerone 4:32 The famous chocolate company based in Bern, Switzerland, has a silhouette of a bear in its logo. That's because Bern is sometimes called a city of bears. BMW 4:55 The logo is simply a part of the Bavarian flag, the area of Germany where the company originated. LG 5:18 The logo is a stylized image of a person’s face. According to the company, this represents its aspiration to have human relations with their customers. Evernote 5:34 The corner of the elephant’s ear is folded over in a similar way how people fold the corner of a page to make notes. Coca-Cola 5:57 In the space between the letters ’O’ and ’L’, you can see the Danish flag. It’s purely a coincidence. 08 common Interview question and answers - Job Interview Skills 1. "Tell me a little about yourself." You should take this opportunity to show your communication skills by speaking clearly and concisely in an organized manner. Because there is no right or wrong answer for this question, it is important to appear friendly. 2. "What are your strengths?" This is a popular interview question. They want to know what you think of yourself. Although this is a general question, there is a wrong and right answer. The wrong answer is a generic answer saying you are organized and friendly. Although it will not hurt you during the interview, it will certainly not help you either. Answer this question based on the type of job you are applying for. 3. "What are your weaknesses?" For this answer, you should display a weakness that can be seen as a strength. There are many types of answers that will work. Some answers will be good answers for certain jobs, while the same answer will be a bad answer for a different job. Select an answer that will work for the position you are applying for. 4. "Where do you see yourself in five years?" This question primarily depends on where you are in your career. A person with 5 years of experience will have different goals than a person with no work experience.This question is asked to see how serious a candidate is about his or her career. Some people might not know their goals, and some people might have goals of becoming rich and retiring early. Those are incorrect answers for this question. The type of answer you want to give is an ambitious answer that shows you really love your career. A good interviewer will read between the lines and find out if a person is going to be a hard worker or just a mediocre one. Being descriptive and shooting for a big goal is something interviewers want to hear. 5. "What do you know about our company?" A typical job interview question, asked to find out how much company research you have conducted, is "What do you know about this company?" Prepare in advance, and in a word, research, so you can provide relevant and current information about your prospective employer to the interviewer. 6. "Are you good at dealing with change?" Dealing with change is common in the work place. A simple yes will not be sufficient to impress the interviewer. This is another type of question where everyone will have similar answers. Of course everyone is going to claim being excellent dealing with change. You got to communicate that you are really good at dealing with change. 7. "Do you work well under pressure?" In most cases, the best answer to this question is answering yes. Working well under pressure is a good trait to have. However, I think if you answer that you work the same with pressure and without pressure, the interviewer will be more impressed. However, you will need to explain in words why this is better. 8. "How do you make important decisions?" There are many ways to answer this question, and if you have a reasonable method of making decisions, it will probably be sufficient. One answer I thought of included not being afraid of asking your manager. You can follow up by saying even the best needs mentoring, and you always want to improve. So basically, this could work as an answer, but depending on the job, you might have a better shot with an answer like my example.

There's a good old fashion venture capital driven operating system. It goes back to central currency and corporatism and chartered monopolies and really the way our economy works, which has worked for a good 400 or 500 years and promoted everything from the British East India Trading Company right through to Walmart and General Electric. But when you take that and juice it up with digital steroids, weird things start to happen. You end up able to tweak and optimize your business so carefully that you can really see is a growing? Is it not growing? What can we do to promote growth? Growth. Growth. And if your company is not growing you end up in big trouble against all the other players that are growing. It's simple power law dynamics. It's a winner takes all landscape. So if you have a company like Twitter, which I would see in my old fashion view as a successful company. It makes $500 million a quarter based on 140-character app. Success, right? No. In the current environment that's a failure because they don't have a growth strategy. They don't know how to turn into a video company, a news company, a social company, an everything company. And the reason why the digital economy is breaking our businesses is because we're taking the old agenda of growth and running it on digital platforms and it ends up amplifying and spinning this priority out of control. This Employment Law This Week Deep Dive episode addresses the heightened focus on equal pay and executive compensation in the wake of the #MeToo movement and what that means for employers as they evaluate bonuses and pay structures for the upcoming year. Read on for more about this episode:  1. The #MeToo Movement Brings Equal Pay into Focus The #MeToo movement has brought with it a heightened focus on equal pay and executive compensation. As employers are evaluating bonuses and comp structures this year-end, Gretchen Harders, from Epstein Becker Green, explains how even comparable salaries may not always result in equal pay. "Looking at overall compensation, particularly in the industries where maybe salary is lock-step by position, and where the pay differentials can come into play are in the bonuses. The only way to completely ensure that you're in compliance over compensation and bonuses is to do an equity pay audit. There are a number of consultants out there that can come in and look at all the different positions, do the comparisons, run the numbers, and be able to come up with results that really tell you where a company might have some issues." Equal Pay Laws Go Local In 1963, Congress passed the Equal Pay Act, which amended the Fair Labor Standards Act to require equal payment for “substantially similar” work. States and cities have largely taken it upon themselves to clarify the EPA, and that trend continues today in the context of #MeToo. Jeffrey Landes, from Epstein Becker Green, has more about recent equal pay law activity. "We've seen acceleration of the trend with respect to state and local equal pay changes. Particularly, we've seen a broadening of equal pay laws. For example, the federal equal pay law focuses on equal pay for substantially equal work. However, that standard has now been loosened in a number of states. The New Jersey Equal Pay Act that went into effect on July 1 stands out and may be used by others as a model going forward. It is, without question the most robust equal pay legislation we've seen today. For example, while we typically think of pay equity as a gender issue and addressing the gender gap, New Jersey prohibits pay discrimination based on 20 protected categories." 3. Pay Transparency and Compensation We’re also seeing more legislative activity around pay transparency. Gretchen Harders: "The pay transparency idea is that you don't want to prevent employees from speaking to each other about their compensation and disclosing to each other what their salary and wages and compensation is in any given time. And under these state and local laws, employers are not allowed to fire or take any adverse employment action against an employee because they told somebody what their salary was or what their compensation or bonus was." 4. Salary History Inquiries And more efforts are underway to ban salary history inquiries. Marc Mandelman, from Epstein Becker Green, has more. "The premise behind salary history legislation is that, on average, women and minorities have historically been paid less than their male or non-minority counterparts, and that basing a person's pay on what he or she has previously been paid will only perpetuate that trend. A number of jurisdictions have enacted salary history bans and pay transparency laws, and many employers have had to change longstanding hiring and compensation practices in the name of equality. And there isn't really any proof that these laws will have the desired effect. So there is some skepticism out there." The problem is, it’s not always a popular solution as opponents argue it would unfairly hurt the poor- as we’ve seen play out in France lately with the Yellow Vest protests. When we use energy from fossil fuels-- like coal, oil and natural gas, we release carbon dioxide and methane into the air. These gases are “greenhouse gases” that trap heat in the atmosphere and contribute to global warming. They are also known as carbon emissions because they contain the element carbon. With a carbon tax, people and business would have to pay a fee for their carbon emissions. **How would a carbon tax fight climate change? The idea with a carbon tax is to make energy from fossil fuels super expensive, so people won’t use it as much. Examples of this would be really high taxes on gasoline, jet fuel, your monthly electricity bill. If fossil fuel use become expensive, businesses would be more likely to invest in cleaner energy sources like wind, solar, hydro, etc. **What are the pros of carbon taxes? It’s one if the easiest ways to decrease carbon in the atmosphere. In some places where a carbon tax has been implemented-- like Sweden and British Columbia, it’s led to a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. **What are the arguments against carbon taxes? One of the main arguments against carbon tax is that it will unfairly hurt the poor. It’s a tax on things that are pretty essential for daily life, like heat for your home, or transportation. So, if you tax these things, it could really be bad for those that are already struggling with their bills. **How is a carbon tax different from cap and trade? Like the carbon tax, cap-and-trade policies aim to reduce greenhouse gas pollution by making it more expensive. But instead of a tax, cap-and-trade rules put a limit on how much carbon big industries like oil refineries, power plants and factories can release into the air. The government makes businesses buy permits, called allowances, for each ton of carbon they emit. And, there’s a financial incentive to be clean: if a business has any allowances leftover, it can sell them to another business that may be going over its limit, and make some extra money. Translation from Spanish: Hi, my name is Bertha Zúniga Cáceres. I am currently the general coordinator of COPINH (Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras). From Honduras, from the Lenca people, from the fight for the truth, justice and a guarantee of non-repetition in the case of our sister and companion Berta Cáceres, we salute the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights for speaking about this case, as it is emblematic and crucial in showing the violation of indigenous communities by companies and financing banks. We would like to tell you that from the side of COPINH, there have been various efforts to uncover the truth and that today, the root of international investigation efforts has been validated, and we have sufficient proof to know the intellectual authors of this crime, in which there was clear involvement of the Honduran private company DESA, state’s security forces, its employees, and also banks and investors which were negligent for not knowing what was happening since 2013 until her murder in 2016. They have done nothing to avoid the killings, not only hers, but of other companions in the area. This criminal structure was financed by international banks such as the Dutch development bank (FMO), Finnish development bank (Finnfund) and Central American Bank for Economic Integration (Banco Centroamericano de Integración Económica). Today we are sure that there was an awareness of what was happening. There are also declarations that have been produced by international banks, local banks, and the private national company. In these declarations the violations against indigenous communities and their fundamental rights to life are clear, but there is also a general violation of human rights that makes this supposed development model, that brings only death, incompatible with human rights. Y desde Honduras, desde pueblo Lenca, desde la lucha por la verdad, la justicia y la garantía de no repetición, en el caso de nuestra hermana y compañera Berta Caceres, saludamos al Foro de empresas y derechos humanos para hablar de este caso, como es un caso que es emblemático en manifestar la violación a las comunidades indígenas por parte de empresas y bancos financiadores. Es decirles que desde el COPINH se han impulsados distintos esfuerzos para encontrar la verdad y que hoy mismo, al raíz de esfuerzos internacionales de investigación, se corrobora y tenemos las pruebas suficientes para conocer el autor intelectual de este crimen en donde se ve involucrada claramente la empresa privada hondureña, en específico DESA, articulada de fuerzas de seguridad del estado, a los funcionarios del estado, pero también donde los bancos y financiadores que tuvieron una actuación negligente por conocer lo que estaba pasando desde el año 2013 hasta su asesinato en el año 2016. No hicieron nada para evitar las muertes, no solamente de ella, sino de otros compañeras y compañeros de la zona. Es decir que, esta estructura criminal fue financiada también por bancos internacionales como son los FMO and Finnfund y Banco Centromericano del integración económico. Hoy tenemos la certeza de que efectivamente tenía un conocimiento de lo que estaba pasando. Es también decir que se producen articulaciones de los bancos internacionales, bancos locales, de la empresa privada nacional, y que en estas articulación se ve claramente la violación de las comunidades indígenas a sus derechos fundamentales a la vida, pero también una violación a los derechos humanos en general que hace incompatible este modelo de supuesto desarrollo que solo trae muerte, con los derechos humanos.

With its long and pointed nose, it can reach top speeds up to 150–200 miles per hour. It didn’t always look like this. Earlier models were rounder and louder, often suffering from the phenomenon of "tunnel boom," where deafening compressed air would rush out of a tunnel after a train rushed in. But a moment of inspiration from engineer and birdwatcher Eiji Nakatsu led the system to be redesigned based on the aerodynamics of three species of birds. Nakatsu’s case is a fascinating example of biomimicry, the design movement pioneered by biologist and writer Janine Benyus. She's a co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit encouraging creators to discover how big challenges in design, engineering, and sustainability have often already been solved through 3.8 billion years of evolution on earth.
