Study Abroad / Exchange Year - FAQ
For those who don't know, I was an exchange student at the University of Hong Kong and just got back from my year abroad. I had the time of my life in Hong Kong and could honestly talk about how much I recommend studying abroad for hours -tried so hard to cut this video short but it's still 9min ugh-. Many of you requested a video like this so I hope this helps for those who are interested! Blogpost: What You Will Gain From a Year Abroad: https://sussexstudents.wordpress.com/2016/03/23/what-you-will-gain-from-a-year-abroad/ Blogpost: How to Prepare to Study Abroad: https://sussexstudents.wordpress.com/2016/02/09/finding-home-away-from-home/ I forgot to address the question about how to finance a year abroad: in England you only pay 15% of your normal tuition fee for your year abroad. I believe this is how it works in all UK universities and think this is an amazing deal. You still have to pay for accommodation and living costs but you'd have to do this either way right? Since I went to Asia, things were generally cheaper than they are in Europe so it was quite affordable for me. However, there are plenty of scholarships and student loan schemes that you could check out if finance is still an issue. The best thing to do is probably to speak to someone at your school/uni since these things vary depending on what country you're in. Another missed question was about racism: I never experienced any sort of racism during my time in Hong Kong. In fact, I traveled to multiple other countries in Asia and did not ever come across any racial discrimination. Again, this is just my experience, I'm not saying there aren't any racists in Asia^^ Find more of my year abroad here: instagram: http://instagram.com/kyufleck facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kyufleck twitter: https://twitter.com/kyufleck

🇹🇷 🇬🇷 The Great Population Exchange between Turkey and Greece | Al Jazeera World
As part of the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, Greece and Turkey agreed to uproot two million people in a massive population exchange, the lasting effects of which are still felt by some in both countries today. Only since the 1990s has it been possible for the 'exchangees' caught up in the upheaval and their families to visit what they see as their ancestral villages in Greece and Turkey. Huseyin Selvi was forced out of Greece when he was five, but at the age of 97 he was able to travel in a group from Turkey to the village where he was born. The exchangees had to travel on foot, by train and by sea and many of the ships involved in this mammoth operation were full to overflowing. The elderly and the young especially suffered from the shocking travel conditions. "My mother had to throw my younger sister, who was three or four, into the sea. I don't remember it but that's what my mother told me", says Huseyin. Numan Toker, a second generation exchangee, also travelled to the village in Greece his late mother was forced out of. "It was my mother's last wish. Now I'll bring water from there, to her grave. I'll bring soil...She was longing to see it [village] again but never had the chance. I asked her if I could take her. She replied, "Yes son, please. Would you really take me there?" Of course, I said I would but it wasn't meant to be. We couldn't make it in the end," says a tearful Numan. His ancestors had lived in Greece for 400-500 years, until the population exchange. Recalling his mother's stories, Numan says "She cried, laughed and talked about what they used to do. The day they were called back to Turkey and were leaving, they left 500 sheep and their farmland behind. She even left dinner cooking on the stove. They left everything behind." Population shifts occurred in the early twentieth century as old empires disintegrated and new nation states emerged. But these changes often raised complex questions of identity for the ordinary people caught up in them. Greek Orthodox Christians and Muslims had lived together under Ottoman rule for centuries, though not always entirely peacefully. The Greek war of independence from the Ottomans was fought between 1821 and 1832 and the new state of Greece founded. This created tension which increased after the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913. Muslims remaining in Greece and the Balkans suffered discrimination and persecution, while Greek Orthodox Christians were expelled by the Ottomans from the Aegean region. After the Ottoman defeat in World War One, the victorious allies maneuvered to divide up their former empire. This was resisted by the Turkish nationalists led by Mustafa Kamal Attaturk who fought the Turkish War of Independence between 1919 and 1923. At Lausanne in Switzerland, all the parties sat round the conference table in 1922-23. Part of the resulting Treaty of Lausanne involved an agreement between Greece and Turkey to forcibly exchange around 1.5 million Greek Orthodox Christians and a lower number of Muslims in the largest population displacement of modern times. When the exchangees arrived at their destinations, they often faced serious problems integrating into their new communities – and some of their social, housing and education problems have persisted. Language was an immediate problem and exchangees like Nuriye Can who left Greece in 1923 for Turkey were all Greek-speakers. It was hard for the first generation to learn Turkish after having grown up with Greek as their native language. "I couldn't speak any Turkish when I got married", says Nuriye. "My mother-in-law used to ask me why I spoke the language of an 'non-believer'. She asked, "Why don't you speak your father's language?" I did eventually learn Turkish." There are now reciprocal visits by both Greek and Turks, as part of a cultural project supported by the European Union and the Foundation of Lausanne Treaty Emigrants. "I thought it was a debt of honour, a moral obligation to come and kiss the ground where my grandfathers were born," says Evangelia Kiortci who found her grandparents' village. "They didn't make it, nor did my parents but I'm a third generation refugee, and I've come...They left for Greece and they've always had this sorrow. They had never had the chance to come back and walk on the same ground. I'm deeply moved." For Dimitris Dayioglu, a visit to the Turkish village his grandmother was expelled from, was an equally emotional experience. "My grandmother wanted very much to g Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/ #AlJazeeraWorld #Turkey #Greece

The Columbian Exchange: Crash Course World History #23
In which John Green teaches you about the changes wrought by contact between the Old World and the New. John does this by exploring the totally awesome history book "The Columbian Exchange" by Alfred Cosby, Jr. After Columbus "discovered" the Americas, European conquerors, traders, and settlers brought all manner of changes to the formerly isolated continents. Disease and invasive plant and animal species remade the New World, usually in negative ways. While native people, plants, and animals were being displaced in the Americas, the rest of the world was benefitting from American imports, especially foods like maize, tomatoes, potatoes, pineapple, blueberries, sweet potatoes, and manioc. Was the Columbian Exchange a net positive? It's debatable. So debate. Exchange Ability - UNICA Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe
ExchangeAbility project aims to encourage and increase the number of students with special needs taking part in exchange programs by stimulating their mobility through the organization of site visits connected with different activities across Europe. The project itself offers a possibility for young people with disabilities to take ownership in the promotion and improvement of exchange programs according to their needs. Mobility offers young people opportunities for self-development and future employability. This becomes even more important when we speak about groups more vulnerable to suffer from social exclusion.  The video was shot  by two students of film arts, Mathias Ruelle and Lena Dewaegenaere. The attached video is 1 of 5 portraits of students from five different countries and with five types of disabilities. http://www.unica-network.eu/project/exchangeability

Collecting European and Asian Art Objects in Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century Batavia
Michael North will be giving a Brown Bag Lunch presentation on Wednesday March 23, 2016, from 12 to 1:30pm, at the Bard Graduate Center in New York City. His talk is entitled “Collecting European and Asian Art Objects in Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-Century Batavia." Michael North is Professor and Chair of Modern History and Director of the Graduate Program on Baltic Borderlands at Ernst Moritz Arndt University Greifswald. This winter he was a visiting Professor in the Department of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His publications include Art and Commerce in The Dutch Golden Age (1997), Material Delight and the Joy of Living: Cultural Consumption in Germany in the Age of Enlightenment (2008), The Expansion of Europe (2012), and he is editor of several more publications, including Art Markets in Europe (1998), Artistic and Cultural Exchanges between Europe and Asia, 1400–1900 (2010), and Mediating Netherlandish Art and Material Culture in Asia (together with Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann 2014). His most recent book, The Baltic: A History, was published this past year by Harvard University Press. After John Maurice was named stadholder of Brazil by the West India Company, he took the painters Frans Post and Albert Eeckhout with him on his Brazilian travels as members of his entourage of learned men. Over the next six years the painters recorded what they saw—Post painted mainly landscapes and Eeckhout people and their work—thus making an important contribution to contemporary Europe’s knowledge of Brazil. Compared with this series of paintings, the visual documents of the Dutch presence in Asia have, apart from the graphical reproduction of Batavia, found less attention, although the Dutch East India Company (VOC) has long attracted scholarship. Yet while there are important publications on the trade, shipping, institutional organization, and administration of the Dutch East India Company, the role of the VOC in cultural history, and especially in the history of visual and material culture, has not yet attracted comparable interest. In this talk, North will discuss the role and function of art in the settlements and factories of the VOC in Asia. He will also explore the many forms of cultural exchange that occurred across Asia and offer insights into the mediating processes between the different ethnicities and cultures in Batavia.

China’s old Silk Road revival: hi-speed trains, massive skyscrapers and free-trade zones
More films about China: https://rtd.rt.com/tags/china/ - The Ancient Silk Road was a major trade route that linked Europe and Asia between the 2nd century BC and the late 16th AD. - Modern China is a rapidly growing economy. “One Belt, One Road” is an initiative to revive the Silk Road to help the country play a bigger role in global affairs. - Ancient towns that were once key outposts on the Silk Road are undergoing rapid growth both economically and in infrastructure as they are to reprise their roles as major trading waypoints along the route - Citizens now enjoy new business opportunities and contribute further to developing their cities In its heyday, the ancient Silk Road was Eurasia’s most important trade route, connecting two rich continents to facilitate trade and cultural exchange. Modern-day China has seen near constant economic growth. It boasts of several record figures, including the highest number of skyscrapers and the longest railroads. Five years ago, the government announced a new plan, “One Belt, One Road”, an initiative to revive the Silk Road. The strategy seeks to help China play a bigger role in global affairs through developing an infrastructure that will unite the countries of the two continents under a cohesive economic area. Many ancient Chinese cities that were once outposts along the Silk Road, desert oases or transport hubs are now rapidly transforming themselves into megacities, so that they can, once again, service and profit from the trade route. New businesses are opening, facilitated by the development of a reliable transport system, which in turn brings greater tourist flow. Some cities are also grated the status of special economic area, offering attractive tax incentives to foreign investors. We visit two very different cities; Lanchjou and Urumchi, united by the Silk Road’s history. Both are experiencing rapid development. We meet businessmen who tell us how it feels to watch their home towns transform into economically and politically significant conurbations and how it inspires them to aim for international markets and seek new outlets for their businesses to grow. When The Dutch Ruled The World: Rise and Fall of the Dutch East India Company

The Netherlands is one of Europe's economic centers, despite its small size. This surprising twist of history is due, however, to a less savory turn of events. During the 16th century the Dutch were under the dominion of the Spanish Empire and they didn't like that very much. They fought for their independence for 80 years and their country suffered greatly because of it. Back then the Spanish controlled the lucrative Asian spice trade, which the Dutch economy relied on. However, when the Spanish closed off Lisbon (then the spice hub of the world) the Dutch had no choice but to sail to the Far East and claim the spice trade for themselves. While the Spanish were bogged down in a costly war against the English, the Netherlands swooped in and took over the Asian spice trade through their Dutch East India Company (VOC). In the span of a few decades this new business venture grew to massive proportions and funded the Dutch independence effort, as well as massive land reclamation. Eventually the VOC declined and a perfect storm of wars abroad and at home eventually destroyed it. But after two centuries of operation this one company left an impressive legacy of colonial scars and capitalist wealth that still influences the Netherlands to this day. Under the kind patronage of Nagabhushanam Peddi, James Gallagher & Brett Gmoser.

Two years ago, in Ulaanbaatar, the ASEM leaders decided to designate March 1 as the “ASEM Day”. ASEM Day celebrations have since then taken place in Europe and Asia. It’s a day to promote cooperation, partnership and connectivity between Asia and Europe. A day to celebrate the importance of connecting the two continents, based on the principles of equal partnership and mutual respect. On March 1 in Europe and in Asia there will be opportunities for exchange and encounters, involving young people, students, lecturers, the business world and the diplomatic community.
