In modern organizations with flatter hierarchical structures, these high impact teams are smaller, more agile, and themselves structured to benefit from individual specialization without regard for a ‘pecking order’. Even though these teams are designed to provide maximum flexibility in a constantly changing environment, it is likely that an organization will still experience resistance to change. Overcoming resistance to change in the workplace doesn’t have to be a constant battle. Even though change is ever present, both in the market and within organizations transition does not need to be a struggle, especially regarding those that will help the team in the long run. With a forward looking and proactive strategy, resistance to change is first reduced and then eliminated. 7 things to do to eliminate resistance to change Leadership is an organizational imperative when managing change, and leaders who inspire a cultural shift in their staff have the greatest success in managing change. In a 2013 PwC survey, nearly two thirds of staff surveyed felt that a top leader is in charge of change management and almost half felt that top leaders should be in charge of cultural change. The good news here is that the same number of people who felt that cultural change is also their responsibility. The bad news is that only 14% saw any responsibility for change management falling on their shoulders. The harsh reality is that effective change is determined by having in place a corporate culture conducive to change. It is here that inspirational leadership in flat hierarchical structures is, perhaps, at its most potent. Here are seven strategies for overcoming resistance to change in the workplace: 1. Structure the team to maximize its potential Give team members appropriate roles and responsibilities that use skills to their best advantage, while also providing the potential for personal and team development. 2. Set challenging, achievable, and engaging targets Be clear in guidance about goals and targets. Break change projects into smaller milestones, and celebrate achievements. Goals should be seen as progressive and in line with values and beliefs. 3. Resolve conflicts quickly and effectively Utilize the seven methods of care-fronting to regulate and control communicative breakdowns. Encourage openness and honesty and engender an environment of mutual trust and respect. 4. Show passion Communicate passionately and be an example of belief in the future vision. When other people see leaders’ behaviors emulating those required by change, they more quickly come into line with the new behaviors and become change advocates themselves. 5. Be persuasive Engage employees in change by being an energized leader. Focus on opportunities and persuade rather than assert authority. Share experiences as you persuade change through stories that focus on positive change. 6. Empower innovation and creativity Give opportunities for feedback and remain flexible as you alter course toward your change goals. Encourage people to be creative, discover solutions to unfolding problems, and to become part of the change process. The process is difficult for everyone involved, and your team will be more invested with solutions they have created themselves, rather than those dictated to them. 7. Remain positive and supportive People find change unsettling, even though change is a constant in personal lives as well as professional environments. They will need the support of a positive leader who inspires free thought, honest communication, and creativity as personal and team development is encouraged. Employees expect leaders to manage change. Inspirational leaders create a culture where change becomes the responsibility of all. Retain talent and develop your employees: It may seem counter-intuitive, but as a manager, one of your most reliable means of retaining talent is to keep a continual focus on the employee's own potential for career growth and development. Plenty of managers jealously guard their most valuable people, and some even go so far as to hinder the career advancement of their employees out of a fear of losing good talent. But this practice is counter-productive in both the short-term and the long-term. The more talented and productive the associate, the more likely it is that you will eventually see them move on from your team - either through promotion inside the company, or else in a lateral move to a rival (if they don't see a clear-enough path to progress in your organization). Even taking for granted that the upward momentum of a high-value team-member means that we'll probably lose them at some point, there is still always a great deal to learn, a considerable amount of formal and informal training to go through, before a good individual producer is ready to make the transition to a supervisory role. And the team-member who is actively building the skills to become a viable candidate for advancement, is meanwhile bringing those skills to bear for the benefit of your team. And later on, the reward of seeing an employee whose development you've nurtured through coaching rise to become a colleague brings clear personal and professional benefits as well.

Push the corners of your mind. Just get on this kind of continual learning roller coaster and see what happens." This was among the advice Apple CEO Tim Cook shared with students at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business on April 26th. Back on campus for his 25-year reunion, Cook took part in an hour-long dialogue with Fuqua Dean Bill Boulding and the students in a jam-packed Geneen Auditorium buzzing with excitement to hear from the leader of the world's most profitable company. The Apple CEO has embarked on a career far different than he had envisioned after graduating from Fuqua's Evening Executive MBA program in 1988. "For me the journey was not predictable at all. You have to find your own north star and stay with your north star." As 450 Daytime MBA students prepared to graduate, Cook advised the students to heed Abraham Lincoln's words of wisdom: "I will prepare and someday my chance will come." Cook shared the three keys to his leadership at Apple: people, strategy, and execution. "If you get those three right the world is a great place." Students were able to get a unique glimpse into Cook's motivation, inspiration and leadership role models. Raised in the south and a witness to racial injustice, Cook described his admiration for Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Junior's bravery in risking their lives to fight for what they believed in. He has just three photos in his office: two of Kennedy and one of King. Cook was asked when to follow strict principles of business theory and when to break the rules. His response stressed the importance of risks and learning from failure. "You should rarely follow the rules. What Fuqua teaches you so well is how to learn and how to collaborate. Write your own rules." This message resonated with first-year MBA student Shelby Hall. "I know this follows Steve Jobs' belief that Apple creates products which consumers didn't ever know existed," she said. "It was interesting to hear Tim Cook's perspective on how we should balance writing our own rules while applying the foundations of business taught here at Fuqua." Cook also spoke about some of his recollections from Fuqua. "The people made it an incredible experience. It was great for me to see how bright people approached solutions in different ways." First-year MBA student Juan Danzilo says Cook's willingness to share his experiences shows a deep commitment to Fuqua. "Tim Cook's presence reflects Fuqua's sense of community. His humility and eloquence is admirable. It certainly was a unique opportunity for MBA students to hear from such an inspirational leader."

People are the most important resource of any business. The real question is why wouldn't a manager want to invest time in people? The sad reality is that too leaders get caught up in their inflated self-importance to want to mingle or interact with employees. So, they don't coach. It's inexcusable. Formal coaching in a one-on-one meeting is an effective way for managers to communicate with and motivate employees on a regular basis. A one on one should be done privately, and can take as little as fifteen to as much as sixty minutes, depending on employee needs or situation. Coaching one-on-one meetings are beneficial to the employee, manager and company if done well. Coaching promotes effective communication, recognition, goalsetting, training, employee engagement, performance management, and problem-solving. You can expect positive results from an investment in the leadership skill of coaching if you do it consistently. Research says good coaching can enhance results by 88% improvement. A manager is responsible for the following during coaching: be available, make it a priority, be prepared, limit interruptions, and make it a developmental positive experience.
