Education In Society: Crash Course Sociology #40

11:32
Today we’ll explore the history of education as a social institution, with a specific focus on how the US organizes its educational system. We’ll look at education through the lenses of some sociological paradigms: structural functionalist approaches (including some of the manifest and latent functions associated with education), and a symbolic interactionist approach to education that shows us how self-fulfilling prophecies in educational settings contribute to differences in academic outcomes for students. President John Hennessy, Dean Claude Steele, Professor Michael Kirst and Professor Rachel Lotan discuss: How can we attract our most talented students into careers in education -- especially teaching? Featuring: John Hennessy, President of Stanford University Claude Steele, Dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education Michael Kirst, President of the California State Board of Education Rachel Lotan, Director of the Stanford Teacher Education Program Moderated by SPREES Founder and President Julia Quintero The Stanford Pre-Education Society (SPREES) is Stanford University's first pre-professional society for undergraduates pursuing careers in education, particularly teaching. We believe in encouraging a new generation of talented students to pursue careers in education and providing them with the support they need to get there. Students at "elite" institutions like Stanford often overlook careers in teaching and education. We are here to change that. SPREES believes that guidance and mentorship can inspire exceptional students to become leaders in the field of education. What is EDUCATION POLICY? What does EDUCATION POLICY mean? EDUCATION POLICY meaning & explanation

What does EDUCATION POLICY mean? EDUCATION POLICY meaning - EDUCATION POLICY definition - EDUCATION POLICY explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Education policy are the principles and government policy-making in the educational sphere, as well as the collection of laws and rules that govern the operation of education systems. Education occurs in many forms for many purposes through many institutions. Examples include early childhood education, kindergarten through to 12th grade, two and four year colleges or universities, graduate and professional education, adult education and job training. Therefore, education policy can directly affect the education people engage in at all ages. Examples of areas subject to debate in education policy, specifically from the field of schools, include school size, class size, school choice, school privatization, tracking, teacher education and certification, teacher pay, teaching methods, curricular content, graduation requirements, school infrastructure investment, and the values that schools are expected to uphold and model. Issues in education policy also address problems within higher education. The Pell Institute analyzes the barriers experienced by teachers and students within community colleges and universities. These issues involve undocumented students, sex education, and federal grant aides. Education policy analysis is the scholarly study of education policy. It seeks to answer questions about the purpose of education, the objectives (societal and personal) that it is designed to attain, the methods for attaining them and the tools for measuring their success or failure. Research intended to inform education policy is carried out in a wide variety of institutions and in many academic disciplines. Important researchers are affiliated with departments of psychology, economics, sociology, and human development, in addition to schools and departments of education or public policy. Examples of education policy analysis may be found in such academic journals as Education Policy Analysis Archives and in university policy centers such as the National Education Policy Center housed at the University of Colorado Boulder University of Colorado Boulder.

Will Technology Enslave Us? Jobs, Privacy, Education, Society (2014)

44:48
The Transparent Society (1998) is a non-fiction book by the science-fiction author David Brin in which he forecasts social transparency and some degree of erosion of privacy, as it is overtaken by low-cost surveillance, communication and database technology, and proposes new institutions and practices that he believes would provide benefits that would more than compensate for lost privacy. The work first appeared as a magazine article by Brin in Wired in late 1996. In 2008, security expert Bruce Schneier called the transparent society concept a "myth" (a characterization Brin later rejected), claiming it ignores wide differences in the relative power of those who access information. Brin has introduced versions of the concept into his fiction. In Earth, the setting's future history includes a war pitting most of the Earth against Switzerland, fueled by outrage over the Swiss allowing generations of kleptocrats to hide their stolen wealth in the country's secretive banks. The war results in the end of secret banking and the destruction of Switzerland as a nation. In the setting's present, surveillance by elderly retirees wearing recognizable networked camera-glasses is common. His novel Kiln People is set in a future where cameras are everywhere and anyone can access the public ones and, for a fee, the private ones. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Transparent_Society Shermer appeared as a guest on Donahue in 1994 to respond to Bradley Smith's and David Cole's Holocaust denial claims, and in 1995 on The Oprah Winfrey Show to challenge Rosemary Altea's psychic claims. Shermer made a guest appearance in a 2004 episode of Penn & Teller's Bullshit!, in which he argued that events in the Bible constitute "mythic storytelling," rather than events described literally. His stance was supported by the show's hosts, who have expressed their own atheism. The episode in question, The Bible: Fact or Fiction?, sought to debunk the notion that the Bible is an empirically reliable historical record. Opposing Shermer was Paul Maier, professor of ancient history at Western Michigan University.[34] Shermer made several appearances on NBC's daytime paranormal-themed show The Other Side in 1994 and 1995. After getting to know that show's producers, he made a formal pitch to their production company for his own skepticism-oriented reality show whose aim would be to present points of view of both believers and skeptics. His proposals were not fruitful, but several years later, one of the executives of that company went to work for the then-newly formed Fox Family Channel, and impressed with Shermer's show treatment, requested he pitch it to the network. The network picked up the series, Exploring the Unknown, of which Shermer became a producer and cohost. The series, which was budgeted at approximately $200,000USD per episode, was viewed by Shermer as a direct extension of the work done at the Skeptics Society and Skeptic magazine, and would enable Shermer to reach more people. The equivocal title was chosen so as to not tip off guests or viewers as to the skeptical nature of the show.[35] Various segments from Exploring the Unknown can be found on Shermer's YouTube channel.[36] Shermer has been a speaker at all three Beyond Belief events from 2006 to 2008. He also spoke at the 2006 TED Conference on "Why people believe strange things."[37] Shermer is an occasional guest on Skepticality, the official podcast of Skeptic.[25] Shermer has debated Deepak Chopra on multiple occasions,[38][39] including during their March 2010 appearance on the ABC News program Nightline.[40] He has named Chopra as his personal favourite debating partner.[15] On August 21, 2010, Shermer was honored with an award recognizing his contributions in the skeptical field, from The Independent Investigations Group during its 10th Anniversary Gala. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Shermer Photo by Gnsin [GFDL (http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/fdl.html) or CC-BY-SA-3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/)], via Wikimedia Commons

Article 11 and 13 Explained in Hindi | By Ishan

03:35
Article 11 and 13 Explained in Hindi | By Ishan Article 13 of the Proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on copyright in the Digital Single Market, to give it its full name, is an attempt to reshape copyright law for the internet age. The Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market 2016/0280(COD), also known as the EU Copyright Directive, is a controversial proposed European Union directive intended to harmonise aspects of the European Union copyright law and moved towards a Digital Single Market. Article 11 is the so-called “link tax,” which gives publishers a right to ask for paid licenses when online platforms share their stories. The obvious target is aggregators like Google News, but opponents worry the law could have broader applications. The far bigger headache is Article 13, dubbed the “upload filter” by critics. It says that platforms “storing and giving access to large amounts of works and other subject-matter uploaded by their users” are liable for copyright infringement committed by users. (Meaning they can be sud by rights holders.) So, platforms and copyright holders must “cooperate in good faith” to stop this infringement from happening in the first place. UNICEF Education Think Piece #4: Teacher Performance

22:56
UNICEF has commissioned 10 papers and presentations by leading researchers and practitioners to stimulate debate around educational challenges in Eastern and Southern Africa: a region where most children attend school, but many are not learning the basics. While the articles have academic roots, they are not research papers, nor do they represent UNICEF policy. Rather, they are engaging pieces to inspire fresh thinking to improve learning in Eastern and Southern Africa and globally. This fourth Think Piece is about teacher performance. In the presentation, John Martin, makes the argument that by focusing so strongly on teacher development (ie teacher training) over the past 20 years, we have collectively allowed ourselves to be distracted from the main goal of improving teacher performance. He explains that teacher development is only one of a complex set of factors affecting the broader notion of teacher performance. John discusses these factors alongside the overlooked system of initial teacher training. Arne Duncan's unlearned lessons | IN 60 SECONDS

01:24
Former US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recently published his memoir, “How Schools Work” (Simon & Schuster, August 2018). Duncan became a matinee idol for progressive reformers during the high-flying Obama years, even as the school reform coalition unraveled and high-profile reforms like the Common Core and teacher evaluation disappointed. AEI’s Rick Hess explains that Duncan’s memoir offers a revealing if unintentional window into what reformers got wrong. Fund girls' education for the next generation

01:09
Girls are calling for world leaders to fund quality education. Stand with them so they can follow their ambitions and become the leaders of tomorrow. Over 400 million girls in low and middle-income countries will face missing out on secondary-level schooling in 2030, unless world leaders commit to increasing funding for education. On 1-2 February 2018, government leaders will meet at the Global Partnership for Education Financing Conference in Dakar, Senegal, where they will make financial commitments for education over the next 4 years. World leaders have set a target of all children being able to go to primary and secondary school for free by 2030. But we risk falling dramatically short of this target. That’s why girls are calling on international donors and national governments to boost financial support for education in low and middle-income countries from $1.2 trillion today to $3 trillion in 2030. Educating girls has beneficial effects on society which can contribute to the development of entire countries. However, girls are far more likely to remain excluded from school. Education is every child's right and is key to tackling poverty, climate change and gender equality. By funding quality education for all children and addressing the barriers preventing equal participation at school, we can enable girls to reach their full potential and take the lead - in school, at home and in their communities. Control Societies Speaker Series Lecture Title: "The Biosocial Subject: Sensor Technologies and Worldly Sensibility" Speaker: Liz de Freitas About Liz de Freitas: Elizabeth de Freitas is Professor of STEM Education at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her research focuses on philosophical investigations of mathematics, science, and technology, pursuing the implications and applications of this work in the learning sciences. Her recent work examines gesture, sensation, and embodiment in various kinds of mathematical activity, with the aim of developing a new materialist philosophy of mathematics. She also studies the material and social semiotics of STEM classrooms, seeking new research methods that can address biosocial entanglements. de Freitas writes extensively on social science research methodology, exploring alternative ways of engaging with digital data, and developing experimental research methods that draw on speculative computing and inventive diagramming. She has published three books and over fifty chapters and articles on a range of educational topics. About Control Societies: Control Societies was started as part of the School of Social Policy & Practice’s initiative on Culture, Society, and Critical Policy Studies in order to feature and engage cutting edge scholarship on the enumerating acts of governmentality in computational culture and the incalculable possibilities of justice. For the 2017/2018 academic year, the School of Social Policy & Practice will continue its speaker series in partnership with the Annenberg School for Communication, which produces scholarship on the social, cultural, economic, and political implications of digital information and communication technologies, networks, and systems. Through the speaker series, the organizers aim to explore the philosophical foundations of algorithms, data, and their intersections with governmentality, surveillance, social policy, and the reconfiguring of power relations.
