Analog Signal:- An analog signal is a continuous wave denoted by a sine wave (pictured below) and may vary in signal strength (amplitude) or frequency (time). The sine wave's amplitude value can be seen as the higher and lower points of the wave, while the frequency (time) value is measured in the sine wave's physical length from left to right. There are many examples of analog signals around us. The sound from a human voice is analog, because sound waves are continuous, as is our own vision, because we see various shapes and colors in a continuous manner due to light waves. Even a typical kitchen clock having its hands moving continuously can be represented as an analog signal. Digital Signal A digital signal - a must for computer processing - is described as using binary (0s and 1s), and therefore, cannot take on any fractional values. As illustrated in the graphic below, digital signals retain a uniform structure, providing a constant and consistent signal. Because of the inherent reliability of the digital signal, technology using it is rapidly replacing a large percentage of analog applications and devices. For example, the wristwatch, showing the time of day, with its minute, hour, and sweeping second hands, is being replaced by the digital watch, which offers the time of day and other information using a numerical display. A typical digital signal is represented by 1s and 0s .

A digital signal processor (DSP) is a specialized microprocessor (or a SIP block), with its architecture optimized for the operational needs of digital signal processing. The goal of DSPs is usually to measure, filter and/or compress continuous real-world analog signals. Most general-purpose microprocessors can also execute digital signal processing algorithms successfully, but dedicated DSPs usually have better power efficiency thus they are more suitable in portable devices such as mobile phones because of power consumption constraints. DSPs often use special memory architectures that are able to fetch multiple data and/or instructions at the same time. Digital signal processing algorithms typically require a large number of mathematical operations to be performed quickly and repeatedly on a series of data samples. Signals (perhaps from audio or video sensors) are constantly converted from analog to digital, manipulated digitally, and then converted back to analog form. Many DSP applications have constraints on latency; that is, for the system to work, the DSP operation must be completed within some fixed time, and deferred (or batch) processing is not viable. Most general-purpose microprocessors and operating systems can execute DSP algorithms successfully, but are not suitable for use in portable devices such as mobile phones and PDAs because of power efficiency constraints. A specialized digital signal processor, however, will tend to provide a lower-cost solution, with better performance, lower latency, and no requirements for specialized cooling or large batteries. The architecture of a digital signal processor is optimized specifically for digital signal processing. Most also support some of the features as an applications processor or microcontroller, since signal processing is rarely the only task of a system. Some useful features for optimizing DSP algorithms are outlined below.

A logic signal is a digital signal with only two possible values, and describes an arbitrary bit stream. Other types of digital signals can represent three-valued logic or higher valued logics. A digital signal is a physical quantity that is alternating between a discrete set of waveforms. Alternatively, a digital signal may be considered to be the sequence of codes represented by such a physical quantity. The physical quantity may be the alternating current or voltage of an electrical signal, the light intensity of an optical signal, the signal strength of a radio signal or acoustic signal, the magnetization of a magnetic storage media, et cetera. Digital signals are present in all digital electronics, notably computing equipment and data transmission. With digital signals, system noise, provided it is not too great, will not change the quantification whereas with signals handled using analog processing, noise always degrades the operation to some degree.

The Waveforms, Definition and Basic Concepts of each digital modulation Techniques are discussed here. This Video also explains the basic difference between digital modulation and analog modulation. The digital modulation techniques are amplitude shift keying (ASK), frequency shift keying (FSK) and Phase shift keying (PSK). First of all let's understand, what is modulation? Modulation is a process, where some characteristic of the carrier wave (amplitude, frequency or phase) is varied in accordance with the instantaneous value of the modulating (message or baseband) signal. So if amplitude of the carrier wave is varied, then it is called as amplitude modulation, but if frequency or phase of the carrier wave is varied, according to the instantaneous value of the modulating signal, then it is known as frequency modulation or phase modulation respectively. So now let's Understand the basic difference between continuous wave modulation and digital modulation- Difference between Continuous Wave Modulation and Digital Modulation- Amplitude Modulation (AM), Frequency Modulation (FM) and Phase Modulation (PM) are the examples of Continuous Wave (CW) modulation, while Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) and Phase Shift Keying (PSK) are examples of Digital Modulation Techniques. The basic difference between continuous wave Modulation and digital modulation techniques is based on the nature of message signal (modulating signal). In continuous wave modulation, the message signal is of analog nature but in digital modulation, the message signal is of digital nature (Binary or M-ary encoded version). In both of these modulation techniques, the carrier wave is of analog form. Here it is interesting to note that, the three forms of digital modulation techniques that is ASK, FSK and PSK are analogous to AM, FM and PM of continuous wave modulation respectively. So now let's discuss each digital modulation technique (ASK, FSK and PSK) in detail- Amplitude shift keying (ASK) In ASK, the amplitude of the carrier wave is changed (switched) according to the digital input signal (modulating signal). Therefore amplitude shift keying is analogous to Amplitude Modulation (analog modulation). ASK is analogous to AM, because in Amplitude Modulation (AM), amplitude of the carrier wave is changed according to the instantaneous value of the modulating (message) signal, in the same way in ASK also, the amplitude of the carrier wave is switched (varied) according to the instantaneous value of the modulating signal (digital input signal). The difference is only of the nature of the modulating signal. In amplitude modulation, the modulating signal is of analog kind but in digital modulation, it is a stream of digital bits. the amplitude of the sinusoidal carrier wave is switched, as per the digital input signal. The carrier wave is either not transmitted or transmitted for digital input signal '0' or '1' respectively. That is why amplitude shift keying (ASK) is also called as "ON - OFF Keying (OOK)". Now we will discuss the Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) If the frequency of sinusoidal carrier wave is varied (switched) as per the digital input signal, then it is known as the frequency shift keying (FSK). It is analogous to frequency modulation (analog modulation). The reason behind why FSK is analogous to FM, is.... In Frequency Modulation (FM), the frequency of the carrier wave is varied according to the instantaneous value of the modulating signal, in the same way in frequency shift keying also, the frequency of the sinusoidal carrier wave is varied (switched) as per the digital input signal. The difference is only of the nature of the modulating signal. In FM the modulating signal is of analogue nature while in FSK modulating signal is digital. So here the basic purpose of Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), is to modulate (change/switch) the frequency of the carrier wave, according to the digital input signal. So in Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), we have two types of frequencies of the carrier wave, low frequency for the transmission of '0' and high frequency for the transmission of '1'. In this way, in Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), the information of the digital input signal is present in the frequency variations of the carrier wave. That is why it is known as frequency shift keying. Now let's discuss the Phase Shift Keying (PSK) Phase Shift Keying (PSK) In phase shift keying, phase of the carrier wave (analog) is varied as per the digital input signal. Phase shift keying is analogous to Phase Modulation (analogue phase modulation). The phase shift keying is very much similar to Phase Modulation (PM), because in both of these modulation techniques

Analog vs Digital Control Signals: The Basics
We will be explaining the forms and types of multiple electrical signals. Electrical signals are used as a form of communication between two devices, whether it is a PLC and an instrument, a PLC to another PLC, a PLC to a computer, a measuring element to a transmitter, etc. Communication can be a two-way street, meaning data can be sent or received. It is thus important to establish the frame of reference for communication (the PLC is receiving this data, the transmitter is sending that data, etc.). For the purpose of this document we will be referring to a PLC and its interactions with other devices and signals, due to this we will be explaining signals as they would be referenced from the perspective of the PLC. Analog vs. Digital Digital signals are signals that convey information as either “true” or as “false”. As far as digital signals are concerned there is no middle ground or gray area, it is either one or the other. An example of this would be a light switch, either the switch is set to on or the switch is set to off. Other examples include running/stopped and open/close and occupied/unoccupied. Computers are also built off of this type of logic, they see everything as either 0’s or 1’s. Digital signals can be generated through AC or DC circuits of varying voltages, resistances, or amperages. Analog signals on the other hand convey information on a range. While there may still be 0’s and 1’s now there are values in-between as well (e.g. 0.1, 0.32, 0.76, etc.). Examples of this would include the level on a tank, the volume on the radio, and the temperature within a room. Analog signals can take many forms including the following: 4-20mA, 0-20mA, 0-5V, 0-10V, mV, resistance, etc. Note 1: In comparison with analog signals, digital signals are generally easier to sense and create and thus the hardware cost for these signals is significantly lower. Note 2: Due to noise, which will undoubtedly affect any significant stretch of wire, it is important to use twisted and shielded pairs for analog signals. Doing so will help reject the noise along the line. Only one end of the shield should be landed. Miscellaneous Signals Pulse Signals Analog signals which are generated through the generation of a discrete signal in relation to another variable (e.g. frequency, length, etc.). Frequency pulse, in which the number of pulses over time relates to what is being measured. Example: A turbine meter, which gives a pulse every time a revolution is made. The frequency of the pulse indicates the RPM of the meter. Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is another form of pulse signal. It is a method of holding signals for varying periods to generate a signal (e.g. generate an average voltage and current). Temperature Signals Thermocouples – The generation of a millivolt signal based on the connection of two different metals and how that signal changes with temperature. It is important to note that these signals need to have the same type of metal run across their lines all the way back to the PLC. Therefore, if a terminal block needs to be used it should be a terminal block which has the same material for contacts. The types of thermocouples have been standardized and can be referenced (e.g. type T, J, E, K, N, etc.) RTDs – Resistive Temperature Devices which vary their resistance relative to the temperature they are exposed to. RTDs are composed of metal and the change in resistance is approximately linear with respect to temperature. Note that there are 2 Wire, 3 Wire, and 4 Wire configurations. The measurement essentially works the same but the ones with additional wires are to minimize error due to resistance in the wire connecting the device to the RTD. Thermistors – The same thing as an RTD (changes resistance based off of temperature) but is made out of a ceramic semiconductor. The resistance in these devices changes non-linearly with respect to temperature. Note that there are 2 Wire, 3 Wire, and 4 Wire configurations. The measurement essentially works the same for each configuration but the ones with additional wires are to minimize error due to resistance in the wire connecting the device to the RTD.

COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS: BANDWIDTH OF SIGNAL: In a communication system, the message signal can be voice, music, picture or computer data. Each of these signals has different ranges of frequencies. The type of communication system needed for a given signal depends on the band of frequencies which is considered essential for the communication process. For speech signals, frequency range 300 Hz to 3100 Hz is considered adequate. Therefore speech signal requires a bandwidth of 2800 Hz 3100 hertz – 300 hertz for commercial telephonic communication. To transmit music, an approximate bandwidth of 20 kHz is required because of the high frequencies produced by the musical instruments. The audible range of frequencies extends from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Video signals for transmission of pictures require about 4.2 MHz of bandwidth. A TV signal contains both voice and picture and is usually allocated 6 MHz of bandwidth for transmission.In the preceeding paragraph, we have considered only analog signals. Digital signals are in the form of rectangular waves as shown in Figure. However, for practical purposes, the contribution from higher harmonics can be neglected, thus limiting the bandwidth. As a result, received waves are a distorted version of the transmitted one. If the bandwidth is large enough to accommodate a few harmonics, the information is not lost and the rectangular signal is more or less recovered. This is so because the higher the harmonic, less is its contribution to the wave form.

Continuous signals are “the signals or quantities that can be defined and represented at any instant of time in the sequence.” That is, infinite or uncountable set of number sequence. These signals have finite or infinite sequence with time. These are also called analog signals. The sine, cosine, and triangular waves are examples of continuous signals. An analog signal is a continuous signal that contains time-varying quantities. Unlike a digital signal, which has a discrete value at each sampling point, an analog signal has constant fluctuations. Discrete signals are “the signals or quantities that can be defined and represented at certain time instants of the sequence.” That is, finite or countable set of number sequence. These are also called digitalized signals A discrete time signal which is not quantized can take any value in the given range (i.e. infinite options for the amplitude) where as a digital signal can take any value from a predefined finite set of amplitudes. For example, if a signal is in range 0-5 volts; a discrete time signal (not quantized) can take values like 0.2, 0.02, 0.0005, 2, 4 etc. (just anything in the range 0-5 volts). But if it is uniformly quantized with say N quantization levels, then range 0-5 will be divided into N equal parts, each part will be assigned one value (which is in the range of that specific part), hence giving a set of N amplitude values. Sampling, Aliasing & Nyquist Theorem
Sampling is a core aspect of analog-digital conversion. One huge consideration behind sampling is the sampling rate - How often do we sample a signal so we can accurately recreate it? This may seem trivial at first, but serious problems can arise if we use a bad sample rate, as this can lead to aliasing - The failure to reconstruct the original signal, causing it to appear as a completely different wave of a lower frequency. To combat this problem, we have to make use of the Nyquist-Shannon Sampling Theorem, which tells us what sample rate to use to prevent aliasing from happening. Today, we take a look at all these points and see just how they link together, to allow us to have the common sample rates (eg. 44100 Hz) we see today! Want to see it for yourself?
