ARE U OK? http://geni.us/sva4iUY I think it would be cool to do a video like "25 coping skill ideas" I spent a lot of time trying to find healthy coping skills and as usual over thought it to the point I figured there was no other skills I could do I really wanted to talk about this question because I mention coping skills all the time, yet I am pretty sure I haven’t ever defined it or given you some ideas or options to help you get you started. First, let’s define coping skill: A coping skill is any characteristic or behavioral pattern that enhances a person's adaptation. Meaning that if we feel stress all the time, we can create these defense mechanisms, or coping skills to help us better manage or lessen the stress. These can be distraction techniques or tools to help us process through all that we may be feeling. Due to the 2 types of coping skills, I am going to break these into 2 sections. The first section will be all distraction techniques! So let’s jump into these techniques! Going for a walk - Getting some fresh air, moving your body and getting away from any of your unhealthy coping skills (like self injury tools, food to binge on, or alcohol to drink) can be a great distraction! Painting your nails! - This works if you struggle with purging, self injury, as well as many other issues. It makes us focus on one thing, and then we can’t do much with our hands until it dries. And by then, maybe the intense stress or urge to act out has passed. Blowing bubbles - yes I know children love this, but adults can too! It’s actually really relaxing to watch the bubbles grow and burst. I even have my patients imagine their issue is that bubble and when it pops let the bad or stressful thoughts go away too. Read a good book or listen to a wonderful audiobook. Exercise! Obviously this can only be done if it’s okay with our doctor and body. But moving and exercising regularly can lower our blood pressure, releases endorphins which can help boost our mood and reduce any pain we may be feeling. Deep breathing or breathing techniques. My breath of fire video: https://youtu.be/aT74nms0SBo Watching your favorite show or video series. Draw or doodle! Color! Duh! You knew this one was coming. I love to color, and it is just such a great distraction. There’s something about the feeling of a crayon or colored pencil on paper that is so relaxing to me. So maybe give it a try and see if it works for you! Do a crossword puzzle - or really any puzzle that you like. Writing down some positive or motivational quotes and sticking them up all over your house. Cleaning you house Playing music or even creating new playlists! And with that! Let’s move into the processing type of coping skills! Write a friend a nice card - Call or text a friend (calling is preferred) Impulse logs! Use feelings charts! Write down 2-3 things you like about yourself and your situation. Talking to a therapist! Taking stock of how an emotion feels in our body Write a letter to our younger or older self. Write letters to those who are upsetting us still (but never send them) you can of course tear them up or burn them or whatever, but it can help to get out all that you have been wanting or needing to say but never got the chance. Anxiety is an enhanced state in which one is extremely sensitive to detecting potential threats. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one type of anxiety disorder that is known to be associated with excessive, uncontrollable worry about everyday things. Leading up to conditions such as depression, increased risk for suicide, disability and requirement of high health services, very few people who often need treatment actually receive it. In her talk “How to cope with anxiety”, Olivia Remes of the University of Cambridge will share her vision on anxiety and will unravel ways to treat and manage this health disorder. Arguing that treatments such as psychotherapy and medication exist and often result in poor outcome and high rates of relapses, she will emphasise the importance of harnessing strength in ourselves as we modify our problem-coping mechanisms. When we talk about social anxiety, that worry or nervousness is focused primarily on social interactions. Anxiety is made up of 3 different components: The physiological part, cognitive part, and behavioral part. Physiological Part: This is how anxiety feels in your body. The racing heart, sweaty palms, flushed face, or feeling faint. This is one of the most important components of anxiety because it’s the first one that people notice. Cognitive Part: Our thoughts or thought processes. Any anxious thoughts we have would fall into this category. Such as “I am going to make a fool or myself” or “they will just think I am boring.” Any prediction that comes out of our anxiety would be considered part of the cognitive part. Behavioral Part: For something to be part of this component it needs to be something someone else could notice us doing. This could be not making eye contact, stuttering or even fidgeting. This could also be something we aren’t doing because we are avoiding it, but someone could still notice that we didn’t go to lunch with the team like everyone else. Therefore avoiding something because of our anxiety would still fall under this category. Most people with social anxiety don’t just experience one component. In fact, these 3 parts usually work together to intensify our anxious episodes. Therefore in order to overcome our social anxiety we are going to have to fight back against all 3 of them! The first step is Systematic Graduated Exposure. Which is honestly just a fancy way of saying that we are going to have to slowly expose ourselves to the scary or anxiety provoking thing until it’s no longer so scary. I have talked about exposure therapy in the past, and this is very similar, however, this is specific to social anxiety and it’s treatment. It’s important that this type of exposure therapy be done with a mental health professional so that we can role play different scenarios in session, and get feedback on how it went. It also allows us to play out any situations or circumstances that we are afraid will happen when we try to do this outside of therapy. It also works because it gives you the time you need to see that any of the bodily responses you are having to the anxiety will go away after awhile. As long as we are able to stay in the anxiety-provoking situation we can realize that our feelings of anxiety only last for a bit. And the more we practice it and expose ourselves to the anxious experiences, the better it gets. Also, by role-playing an anxiety-provoking social situation, we can test out any of our dysfunctional beliefs. Thank you to our sponsor The Great Courses Plus! Now in this video I'll be sharing with you how to overcome social anxiety and three techniques to help you do that. " "Now with this process, and something I think you can just find so powerful, is knowing that many times when we feel anxiety, anxiety could easily be the emotion of excitement if we took the judgment and the label off of it. It's the idea that any time we experience something new, i.e. we're in a social environment and we're around new people, and we then have the feeling of anxiety, it could simply be the feeling of excitement. It's just going through a belief system, it's going through a filter in our mind, that converts it into a negative thing. It's almost like that negative definition itself is what causes the anxiety to begin with. I haven't even got into the three techniques I'm going to share, but that alone can allow you to really transmute it from being that feeling of anxiety to sitting there and saying, "Wait a minute, could this be excitement for something new, and is there some type of negative definition I'm imposing on this feeling, and therefore getting that result?" " "Now I've been someone that's felt social anxiety many times before, and especially because of the way that I grew up. Let me give you a little backstory real quick. Between the ages of me being about 9 to 15, my dad was married to someone that was my ex-step-mom. She was very intense when it comes to discipline. We were allowed to watch TV before. We were allowed to have friends before. All of a sudden, when they got married, we weren't allowed to watch television, we weren't allowed to have friends, and all we were really allowed to do was yard work, house work, or go to school. It was like a very military-type style. " "Between that time, of course we went to school, of course we still had interaction there, but we weren't able to really have that casual interaction of being socially at a party or something like that. Then 15 came around and a little bit before that my dad divorced her. When that happened, all of a sudden me and my brother are very excited because we're allowed to have friends, we're allowed to watch TV, which was something we weren't allowed to do for that whole period in our life, and I had to learn how to relate to people. I had to learn how to not be so anxious around other people. " "I remember, looking back at this, maybe I didn't know all this information now, but when I look back at this, one thing that really helped me go through, which is the first one I'm going to share with you, is to change the story that you tell yourself and to change the attachment that you have. If you go out into public and you always believe that you feel anxiety when you're around other people, it's almost like you've been conditioning yourself to feel that emotion where you could simply decide you are going to change that story. As you change the story and you simply realize, hey, I'm just going to decide right now that that doesn't have to have power over me in the present moment, that's when things began to shift. " "For a period of time I was always thinking to myself, "I lost this period of my childhood and I wasn't around people." I realized that that didn't help me, and that, in a way, influenced or emphasized that kind of experience. I remember, even if I went to a party with friends that were already my friends after I started making friends, I would still feel that anxiety. It always came from making it all about me. When I would go somewhere I'd put all the focus on what will other people think about me. But the moment I decided to put that energy out to simply have fun, have more of a sharing-type vibe, which is just loosening up about it, that's when things really began to change. But I had to let go of that story and I had to be more present to the moment. " "Now the second technique I have for you involves understanding how to simply loosen up and have fun. Now the reason I say this is because, a lot of times when we're in and feeling social anxiety, it's coming simply from such a seriousness, like life is so serious. It doesn't have to be. Life can be more fun. Life can be something that we learn how to really ping off other people and collaborate with other people. To do that, one technique you can use is to simply decide to start laughing more often. See things as funny, because then, when you go into that social environment, you can see that the anxiety itself is kind of funny. Maybe you realize that you can just talk to other people... For those who experience anxiety attacks on a regular basis it can be hell on earth. ➟ Anxiety and addiction often go hand in hand For addicts in particular, anxiety is a huge issue. It might have been there before and actually the reason why they started drinking or taking drugs. If the latter is the case, it's called self-medicating...it's when alcohol and substance abuse offer a quick fix, a short-term solution in dealing with anxiety. On the other hand, the anxiety could be a result of the addict's drinking and/or using. What is rare though, is that an addict - especially in the early stages of recovery - is not struggling with anxiety. Therefore, in addiction treatment there is a special focus on how to deal with anxiety - in more healthy and sustainable ways. And one very efficient way to do so are certain mindfulness exercises. ➟ This video provides exercises and coping-strategies on how to deal with anxiety In this video, Paul Garrigan is explaining the correlation between anxiety and addiction, talks about his own experience as former alcohol as well as with patients throughout his life as a professional nurse and mindfulness coach at Hope Rehab, and provides some hands-on exercises / coping-strategies that'll help you deal with you next anxiety attack. ➟ How mindfulness can help with anxiety (and why it's completely intuitive) You'll learn that mindfulness involves things we'd do naturally to calm or soothe ourselves - like pacing / walking or rocking back and forth.
