Environmental Conservation and Natural Resources - YES

01:09
Environmental conservation and natural resources depend on protecting our planet. http://YourEarthSafe.com Sometimes the best thing you can do is nothing at all! At YES that's exactly what we do: we protect parcels of virgin wilderness by purchasing them on the free market and placing them in an independently managed international land trust safe from human exploitation. YES is a tool that allows you to become the beneficiary of virgin wilderness (generically referred to as "Land Unit") to help preserve them in their natural state thus allowing you to collaborate in the conservation of the planet. However small it might be, all contributions to environmental protection are always helpful. By joining YES you as an individual are contributing in a very real way to maintaining the global ecosystem, protecting the globall community and letting nature take its course.

This free, online event was held on May 14, 2008, and was convened by the Ash Center's Government Innovators Network. Visit the Government Innovators Network to view the slide presentations related to this event, for information on future webinars, and to explore innovations in government at www.innovations.harvard.edu. Event description: Ernest Cook led a presentation about the Trust for Public Land's groundbreaking new online Conservation Almanac, the first comprehensive source of information about the state of land conservation in America. The Almanac contains original data for each of the 50 states on dollars spent on land conservation and acres protected by the states and the federal government, as well as a rundown on the policies and conservation programs at work in each state. TPL's project leaders for the Almanac led an interactive "test drive" during this event. Michael Jenkins offered insight into the Katoomba Group's mission and achievements in promoting the growth of ecosystem service markets worldwide. He also discussed the Ecosystem Marketplace Web site, a leading international source of information on systems that provide payments for ecosystem services (PES). This webinar was moderated by Jim Levitt and was cosponsored by the Conservation Finance Forum.

Imagine KC: Episode 7 - Natural Resources Conservation

28:01
In this episode we focus on natural resource conservation in the built environment. The show demonstrates why planning for what we don't build matters just as much as planning for what we do build. Stories look at how preserving the natural environment improves quality of life, reshapes our built environment and creates a more sustainable region by providing benefits to those who live downstream. This episode also highlights communities that are mixing "green" with "grey" infrastructure to address a number of problems. They are making strategic landscape investments to minimize flooding and water pollution, provide healthy recreation options, protect wildlife habitats and beautify neighborhoods. We'll also see how residential and commercial properties are incorporating sustainable features such as rain gardens and green roofs and other green solutions, to bring the built environment and the natural environment closer together. This yearlong series is produced by Angee Simmons, KCPT along with Mid-America Regional Council. Imagine KC is funded by: American Society of Civil Engineers, Garney Family Foundation Fund, Hall Family Foundation, Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City, Kansas City Chapter of the AIA, William T. Kemper Foundation, Lafarge North America, ULI Kansas City, U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and WNET--Blueprint America. SMART Conservation Software

05:35
Bisbee's Fish & Wildlife Conservation Fund proudly funded the creation of SMART Conservation Software. SMART is a new and improved tool for measuring, evaluating and improving the effectiveness of wildlife law enforcement patrols and site-based conservation activities. SMART was started by a diverse group of conservation practitioners who understood the needs of front-line enforcement and who recognized the day-to-day difficulties faced by many conservation managers across the world: operating on thinly stretched resources in the face of escalating threats to biodiversity. SMART recognizes the power of information and importance of accountability in directing resources to where they are most needed. SMART isn’t owned by any one individual or organization: its free and available to the whole conservation community. Learn more about the importance of a SMART approach to conservation.
Save that Drop (The Importance of Water Conservation) | Spela Kunstelj | TEDxYouth@Bologna

09:46
Water is a natural resource that we often take for granted. In nine years, we will not be able to do so with the amount of water we are polluting every day. While we can blame agriculture and industry for the most, we need to start conserving water in our own homes. What are you willing to do to help our Earth? Špela Kunstelj is a senior in high school who wants to raise awareness for environmental issues, especially those that are not talked about enough. She believes that raising awareness is the beginning of positive change. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Water Resources

005 - Water Resources In this video Paul Andersen explains how water is unequally distributed around the globe through the hydrologic cycles. Seawater is everywhere but is not useful without costly desalination. Freshwater is divided between surface water and groundwater but must me stored and moved for domestic, industrial, and agricultural uses. Subsidized low cost water has created a problem with water conservation but economic changes could help solve the problem. Do you speak another language? Becoming a Natural Resources and Environmental Science Student (NRES)

06:42
Natural Resources and Environmental Science (NRES) is an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science degree grounded in the natural AND social sciences. The curriculum is rich in experiential learning, requiring a 3- week summer camp and an internship or research experience. With small class sizes, one-on-one faculty interactions, writing intensive courses, and a strong network of Alumni working to make a difference locally and globally, NRES is a proven program that has been in existence for over 20 years! NRE 201: Natural Resources and Environmental Science is the entry point into the major. Students learn about the curriculum and the various focus areas as well as get to know each other as a cohort that will spend the next three years together. A highlight of the course is our two-day trip to Mammoth Cave National Park which includes a service learning project. Each year the project is different but the goal remains the same, to introduce students to our natural environment in a hands-on way. Biodiversity conservation- This lecture explains about the conservation of biodiversity.Conservation is the defense, maintenance, management, or restoration of wildlife and traditional assets akin to forests and water. Via the conservation of biodiversity the survival of many species and habitats which might be threatened due to human events will also be ensured. Other explanations for conserving biodiversity incorporate securing useful typical resources for future generations and protecting the health of eco-system features. Conservation can commonly be divided into two types: In-situ: Conservation of habitats, species and ecosystems the place they naturally occur. This is in-situ conservation and the typical tactics and interplay are conserved as good as the elements of biodiversity. Ex-situ: The conservation of elements of biodiversity out of the context of their normal habitats is known as ex-situ conservation. Zoos, botanical gardens and seed banks are all illustration of ex-situ conservation. In-situ conservation shouldn't be normally possible as habitats will have been degraded and there is also competition for land because of this species have got to be removed from the field to save them Threatened Species Over the last 200 years many species have turn out to be extinct and the extinction price is on the develop because of the have an impact on of human pastime. The fame of species has been assessed on a global scale by means of the sector Conservation Union. Taxa that are dealing with a excessive chance of worldwide extinction are catalogued and highlighted within the IUCN purple record of Threatened Species. Threatened Habitats Habitat destruction comes in many forms from clear felling of forests to easy alterations in farming practices that fluctuate the total surrounding habitat. If a habitat is degraded or disappears a species may additionally become threatened. Theodore Roosevelt's Conservation Influences

05:15
Theodore Roosevelt was a great lover of nature long before he became president. From boyhood throughout his adult life, Roosevelt's enthusiasm for conservation was encouraged and shaped by several influential figures. Early on, TR's uncle, Robert Barnwell Roosevelt inspired his nephew with his tireless struggles on behalf of conservation policy. Later, Roosevelt would meet the naturalists John Burroughs, George Bird Grinnell, and Museum ornithologist, Frank Chapman. During his presidency, Roosevelt would call upon them as trusted advisors. One of his greatest political allies in the crusade to preserve America's natural beauty was Gifford Pinchot, the first chief of the U.S. Forest Service. The restored Theodore Roosevelt Memorial is now open at the American Museum of Natural History. Visit amnh.org/roosevelt for more information.

The IUCN Red List: Guiding Conservation for 50 years

03:42
The IUCN Red List is the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of wild species and their links to livelihoods. Far more than a list of species and their status, it is a powerful tool to inform and catalyse action for biodiversity conservation, critical to protecting the natural resources we need to survive. Help us reach our goal of assessing at least 160,000 species by 2020 to make The IUCN Red List a more complete ‘Barometer of Life’. https://50.iucnredlist.org/donate
