Today I will speak about my new role as shadow Minister for Small Business and the need for Government to meaningfully engage with our small business community. After my appointment to the portfolio the Minister for Small Business said he was pleased to spar with someone who had small business experience. I assure him I have experience. My husband and I owned and managed an award-winning second generation family business for 17 years and I also worked for a number of years in a small retail business while studying at university. In 2007 I completed the company directors course at the Australian Institute of Company Directors. The approach I bring to this position will be informed not only by my own experiences but also those of other business owners that I have met. I have also gained experience through being a member of a number of boards and committees of local, State and national businesses, business chambers, business enterprise centres, industry groups and women in business organisations. I also bring my perspective as a tourism operator after working with thousands of small businesses delivering tourism around Australia for the past 17 years. I will soon organise a tour around the State to formally consult with many businesses. My experience has been gained not only from my work in the industry but also from the experience of my colleagues, which will inform how I contribute to Labor's policy in this important area. I will also harness the wealth of information gained from research by academics, government agencies and other sources to develop evidence-based approaches to supporting the small business sector. Most importantly, I will consult widely and cooperate with small businesses and stakeholders and will strive to achieve tangible outcomes that will assist the small business community. The small business sector is a community made up of mums and dads, young people newly out of TAFE or university, disrupters and families. There is much debate on how to classify small businesses. Should it be based on revenue, profitability, the number of full-time equivalent employees or the payroll size? We know that small businesses make up 96 per cent of businesses in our economy with 650,000 small businesses operating in New South Wales, which employ approximately half of our workforce. They are small in size but big in number and thus make a significant contribution to our economy. We know what small business is but, more importantly, Government must know what small business wants. The conservatives champion red tape reduction as one of the most important issues for the small business sector and the Liberal-Nationals Government claims it is addressing the red tape burden placed on small businesses with its red tape reduction target. However, many of the measures that have been implemented have not yielded any savings or have not been verified by an independent body as having achieved the claimed outcomes. Any claimed reductions in red tape and costs should be properly and independently verified, particularly those concerning issues of safety or other compliance. We do not want to raise the bar too high so that established small businesses cannot be successful, or set it too low so that disruptive businesses are able to prosper. Small Business Lending for High Risk Industries Although you are operating a very successful business, have ever wondered why your business loan request is always declined? Lending institutions may view your business as high risk or restricted industry. They specialize in helping business owners with follow up and client retention. This video addresses some of the more common questions that come up in the process of starting and running your small business. What top issues should the new small business owner be wary of or educated about when they are in the very beginning of starting their business? For example, what should you be aware of when picking a business name or starting a new business in a competitive industry? When it comes to choosing a name for your small business, it is important that you make sure you aren’t taking someone else’s business name and possibly infringing on their trademark rights. This could get you in some hot water; even if it doesn’t get you into trouble, it can certainly give you some hassle down the line if you are forced to change your business name once you have already built a brand or a reputation. Before you start your business, Google the name that you have in mind for your business. That will give you a preliminary idea of your competition and if there are any other similarly-named businesses. After you Google the name, you can then search your state’s Secretary of State website for a business name or trade name to see if somebody has already registered your potential business name. After that, go to the USPTO website and do a trademark search to see if someone has a registered or pending trademark with the same or a similar name as what you want to use for your business. This doesn’t always completely cover your bases because there are still some ways you can get bitten later on, but these are at least a few simple first steps to making sure that you are going to be able to build a brand with a name that you can keep and hopefully avoid any problems later on. When hiring somebody to work for you, the biggest mistake business owners make is improperly classifying the person they are hiring. A lot of people want to treat their new hires as independent contractors rather than employees because they get to avoid paying worker’s compensation insurance and payroll taxes. But if the new hire is actually an employee, not an independent contractor, that misclassification can have very big consequences. So, the very first step is to make sure that if your employee is indeed an employee, then you must treat him as an employee. If he really is a contractor, then great, you can classify him as a contractor. If you are dealing with a type of business where you have trade secrets or proprietary information that you wouldn’t want to get out to your competitors, you can have your new hires sign an Employment Agreement or Independent Contractor Agreement that contains a confidentiality clause or a non-disclosure clause to protect that proprietary information. It’s always a good idea to seek legal advice and help from a business attorney when you are just starting out. You will be so busy with your growing business and the last thing you want to do is waste your time on legal issues that 1) you’re probably not an expert in, and 2) you really don’t have the time to learn about and do. It’s always better for you and your business in the long run if you just stick to what you know (your business) and outsource the other stuff to other professionals. I wanted to discuss sharing economy companies, and provide a framework based on Perren and Kozinets (2017) and others’ work on the sharing economy. What is the sharing economy? From my perspective and others, it encompasses some form of resource exchange over software platform intermediation. Many people focus on the social and networked aspects of the platform. To a large degree, it does not different much from the existing economy, we still use all of the same mechanisms in the traditional economy, but software platforms amplify the effects of the traditional economy. Perren and Kozinets classify different platforms into consociality and platform intermediation, and they come up with 4 types: : Forums Matchmakers : Enablers Hubs Here are some key aspects of the sharing economy: 1. Focus on the long-tail. It is about connecting people that would not normally be connected in the real world. 2. Blurring of boundaries. Roles are boundaries change rapidly in the sharing economy. 3. Trust and reciprocity. I think this is the term of consociality that occurs. 4. Quality mechanisms. The platform needs to display good quality mechanisms. 5. Content production. Jolly Roger bots crush the spirit of a potential "Business Loan" scammer

This call is another "business loan" scam. Now, it might not be fair to classify all business loan telemarketers as scams, but there are a TON of warnings from the BBB, FTC, and various trade organizations regarding these types of calls. So if you are a small business, please be cautious before making any kind of deal with telemarketers or cold callers who offer you unsecured business loans. Everyone understand? Nobody mad at me? Great. In this call, the telemarketer sounds like a nice person. But our goal here at the Jolly Roger Telephone Company is to disrupt the unsolicited outbound telemarketing industry, and this is a fantastic example of the bots at work. This call starts with Whitey Whitebeard, then transitions to Debbie Doldrums, and then finally to Moby Dick. To any of you long-time listeners, you will recall that these bots used to simply restart. Well, I figured out how to get the bots to hand off to each other without having to record any new lines with the original voice talent (although Whitey recently came back for another recording session - updates coming soon!) So please try not to empathize too much with this woman. She sounds like she can get a decent job with customer service. Maybe her employer will finally stop this terrible and despised business practice. Thank you everyone for using the Jolly Roger bots and helping to disrupt the outbound telemarketing industry! Since then, the town composts, recycles, or reuses 80% of its garbage. It may not technically be 100% zero waste, as the remaining 20% goes into the landfill, but it's a remarkable achievement for an entire community, in such a short amount of time. The impacts have been positive - cutting costs for the community drastically, as well as improving the conditions of the lush and beautiful environment that surrounds the town in Southeast Japan. Residents must wash and sort virtually anything that is non-compostable in their household before bringing it to the recycling sorting center. Shampoo bottles, caps, cans, razors, styrofoam meat trays, water bottles...the list goes on and on (literally) into 34 categories. At the sorting center, labels on each bin indicate the recycling process for that specific item - how it will be recycled, what it will become, and how much that process can cost (or even earn). It's an education process for the consumer. All kitchen scraps must be composted at home, as the town has no garbage trucks or collectors. And as for other items, reuse is heavily encouraged. According to Akira Sakano, Deputy Chief Officer at Zero Waste Academy in Kamikatsu, the town has a kuru-kuru shop where residents can bring in used items and take things home for free. There is also a kuru-kuru factory, where local women make bags and clothes out of discarded items. At first, it was difficult to be come accustomed to the new rules. "It can be a pain, and at first we were opposed to the idea," says resident, Hatsue Katayama. "If you get used to it, it becomes normal." Now, it's even being noticed within Kamikatsu's businesses. The first zero-waste brewery has opened in Kamikatsu, called Rise and Win Brewery. The brewery itself is constructed of reused materials and environmentally friendly finishes. By 2020, Kamikatsu hopes to be 100% zero waste, with no use of landfills, and to forge connections with other like-minded communities in the world, spreading the practice of zero-waste. Big business often goes along with such regulations because burdensome though they are, they give them an advantage over their small competitors. In 2014, the cost of a taxi licence in New York City, a so-called medallion, was a staggering one million dollars. Clearly no small company could afford to put up that sort of price, which is the point. Mega corporations peddling their influence, lobbying, and at times outright bribing politicians, have been doing this sort of thing since at least the late 19th Century. As Adam Smith wrote way back in 1776: “People of the same trade seldom meet together, even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public, or in some contrivance to raise prices.” But Trump isn’t stopping there, it isn’t just feather bedding, make-work and jobs for the boys he’s intent on consigning to the dustbin, it’s the whole socialist apparatus including the police state that spies on Americans without warrant and promulgates foreign wars for profit. The one group he hasn’t attempted to take on yet are the money creators, but given time he almost certainly will.
