19. Investment Banks

01:11:19
Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) Professor Shiller characterizes investment banking by contrasting it to consulting, commercial banking, and securities trading. Then, in order to see the essence of investment banking, he reviews some of the principles that John Whitehead, the former chairman of Goldman Sachs, has formulated. These principles are the basis for a discussion of the substantial power that investment bankers have, and their role in society. Government regulation of these powerful investment banks has been a thorny issue for many years, and especially so now since they played a significant role in world financial crisis of the 2000s. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Why A Certificate Of Deposit Is a Great Investment! How and When To Invest in a Bank's CD?

05:35
Should you buy a certificate of deposit? Can a banks' CD help you save your money and beat the inflation? In this video, I'm sharing with you my opinion. They say that it doesn’t make sense to buy certificates of deposit, because they (CDs) cannot beat the inflation. That’s right, that’s correct. But let’s imagine the following situation. I have ten thousand dollars. I don’t need this money right now. But I know that I will need it in a year, in three hundred and fifty six days. What should I do with this money? What can I do with it? The most common advice: never hide your money under the mattress. Well, I agree with this advice, because I could be robbed, or there could be a flood, a fire… And what’s even more dangerous, inflation… Yes, two-three percent is not too much. But I don’t want to lose that two hundred or three hundred dollars. Money must work for you. We all know that. Another advice: Invest in the stock market. Make ten percent. In a year you will have eleven thousand dollars. That's possible, but the opposite situation is possible as well. Look, I don’t want to make ten or five percent on money, I already invest in the stock market and contribute to my retirement account, I just want to be able to use my money in a year. Bitcoins? No comments here. A savings account. Bingo! But there is a little problem with savings account. Too low interest rates. And too much additional features. For example, I can withdraw my money at any time. It’s like a pocket. I don’t need my money in thirty or one hundred days, I will need it in one year. So, the best solution for me is to go to the bank and buy a one-year certificate of deposit, or a CD, which stand for certificate of deposit. This is going to be the best choice for me, better than investing in the stock market, better than buying gold, silver, cryptocurrencies, better than savings account because of a higher interest rate. My goal is not to make, double, triple or invest this money, my goal is just to be able to use it in a future. And I know exactly the day when I will need that money. What are some benefits of buying a certificate of deposit? The first benefit is that my money is insured by FDIC - the Federal Insurance Deposit Corporation. If my bank goes bankrupt, I will get my money back. That’s great! Higher interest rates. Yes, I know and I agree that two or three percent won’t beat the current inflation rate, but additional two hundred - three hundred dollars is quite enough for me. No additional features and options, like I cannot withdraw my money earlier. But I don’t need this option. If someone has some amount of money, and they don’t need this money right now, but they will need it in future, I believe, that buying a certificate of deposit is a smart investment choice. For some people buying a CD, if they understand why they do that, and what their goals are, might be the best solution to save money. For others, who, for example, want to start their investing journey, and don’t know where to start from, it might be not the best solution, because I do agree that CDs don’t beat the inflation. It depends. Let me know your opinion about Cds, do you buy certificate of deposits, do you invest in Cds? Maybe there are some other more profitable and more secure options, what do you think about a “bonds versus CDs” battle? Let me know your opinion in a comment section below this video, and don’t forget to get your free gold investment guide that will help you learn how to diversify your investment portfolio with precious metals. Skip Your Bank! These 7 Options Will Make You MUCH More Money.

17:49
Let’s see if this sounds familiar….you have some money sitting in a savings account and it is probably making next to nothing. If you are not really sure what to do, you have several options. 🤔 You can go to a bank and stick it in a savings or money market account, chances are they are not going to pay you anything. If there were, you wouldn’t be watching this video. With that in mind, I want to talk about 7 alternatives to placing you savings into a bank. 🏦 I am also going to share a client story with you about where a client was keeping his cash. (You won’t believe where he was keeping it or how much he was keeping there!) So let's dive right into your options: ➡️ Online savings [1:10] - Any sort of online savings or bank account (just make sure they have FDIC). They have a lot less overhead than traditional brick and mortar - this could mean higher interest rates. ➡️ US Treasuries (TBills) [3:54] - It may seem a little old school - but you can do all of this online. ➡️ High Dividend Stocks [4:42] - This is a little higher risk and not somewhere you want short-term money. Just because a stock pays a dividend doesn’t mean it won’t drop in value. ➡️ Bonds [6:27] - You are most likely not going to buy individual bonds, but rather bond mutual funds. I would suggest ETFs, just remember higher yield = higher risk. ➡️ Blended Portfolio [9:30] - This would be a mix of stocks and bonds, and utilizing ETFs to get this blend. You can utilize a platform like Betterment or Wealthfront. 🤯 Before we get to the last two, I want to tell you about this client ...he had $140,000 in a safe in his basement. I can’t remember how long he had this cash sitting there, but I thought it was crazy. Sitting there, making nothing for him. This is an option that you DO NOT pick.🤯 ➡️ Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) [12:14] - This is a way to invest in real estate without managing properties. You can buy these many different ways, the simplest is to buy a REIT ETF. Another is online real estate investing, my favorite platform for this is Fundrise. ➡️ Peer-To-Peer Lending [14:25] - This allows YOU to be the bank. You are lending money to other peers. The great thing is, you can see their reasons for borrowing. This allows you to set your risk level. That is my top 7 alternatives to bank accounts. You can pick as many or as few of these options as you like. I just wanted to share that there is more than one way to invest and earn interest. Which options sounds the most attractive to you? Are you already using one or more of these options? Let us know how this is going for you. ★☆★Resources Mentioned in Video★☆★ 📉 https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/fundrise-youtube-invest-500.php 📉https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/lendingclubinv-youtube-get-started-with-lc.php 📈 https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/betterment-youtube-invest-500.php 📉 https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/ally-youtube-invest-500.php 📉 https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/resources/etrade-youtube-invest-500.php ★☆★ Want More Good Financial Cents? ★☆★ 💻 Check out my blog here: https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/ Listen to my podcast here: 🎙 https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/good-financial-cents-podcast-investing-building-wealth/id775107294?mt=2 Pick up my best selling book, Soldier of Finance, here: 📗 http://amzn.to/2xOH78V Connect with me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jjeffrose My most favorite inspiration T-shirt line, Compete Every Day: 👕 https://www.goodfinancialcents.com/compete

Passive Income Dividends: Pay Your Bills with Monthly Dividend Cash

09:16
How I created a monthly income stream from passive dividend investing. There is no investing strategy more popular than dividend investing and for good reason. Dividend stocks outperform the rest of the stock market and put cash in your pocket. Dividend investing is safer than other investing strategies and will help you reach your investing goals. The only problem with dividend stocks is that most companies only pay dividends four times a year. That makes it difficult to create a monthly stream of income from just dividends. In this investing tutorial, I show you how to create a source of passive income from just four dividend investments. You'll not only get constant cash flow every month but will benefit from price appreciation for double-digit returns. Stop chasing stocks and worrying about a stock market crash. Learn how to invest in dividend stocks. This dividend investing tutorial will not only explain how dividends work but will show you a dividend investing strategy that includes monthly cash flow and upside returns potential. Learn how to invest in dividend stocks for income and double-digit returns. Includes four picks for the best dividend stocks of 2018 and how to invest in all without losing hundreds in fees. Why Does Warren Buffett Love Bank Stocks So Much?!?!

06:43
Among the more humorous and memorable misquotes of the 20th century was Willie Sutton's apocryphal response to a reporter asking him why he robbed banks: “Because that's where the money is.” But while Sutton didn’t actually say that, Warren Buffett is apparently on that same page when it comes to financial institutions: When Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A) (NYSE: BRK-B) gave the details on its holdings this week, half of the biggest holdings were banks. In this segment of the podcast, MarketFoolery host Mac Greer, along with senior analysts Andy Cross and Ron Gross, reflect on how the investing guru is doing so well with what, at first glance, might seem to be a fairly boring portfolio. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Subscribe to The Motley Fool's YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/TheMotleyFool Or, follow our Google+ page: https://plus.google.com/+MotleyFool/posts Inside The Motley Fool: Check out our Culture Blog! http://culture.fool.com Join our Facebook community: https://www.facebook.com/themotleyfool Follow The Motley Fool on Twitter: https://twitter.com/themotleyfool

13. Banks

01:13:23
Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) Banks are among our enduring of financial institutions. Their survival in so many different historical periods is testimony to their importance. Professor Shiller traces the origins of interest rates from Sumeria in 2000 BC, to ancient Greece and Rome, up to the Song Dynasty in China between the 10th and the 12th century. Subsequently, he looks at banking in Italy during the Renaissance and at the goldsmith bankers in 16th and 17th century England. Banks have survived so long because they solve adverse selection and moral hazard problems. Additionally, he covers Douglas Diamond's and Philip Dybvig's model, which does not only analyze the banks' role for liquidity provision, but also reveals the possibility of bank runs. This leads Professor Shiller to deposit insurance as a means to prevent bank runs. He discusses the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as well as the Federal Savings and Loans Insurance Corporation, together with the role that the latter played during the savings and loan crisis of the 1980s. The necessity to regulate banks in the presence of deposit insurance results in a discussion of the role of the Basel commission and an explicit calculation to illustrate the core principles of Basel III. At the end, Professor Shiller provides an overview of financial crises since the beginning of the 1990s, with the Mexican crisis of 1994-1995, and the Asian crisis of 1997. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Warren Buffett Portfolio [4 Investments that Make No Sense]

08:07
See all the Warren Buffett stocks in this playlist series - learn how to invest like Buffett. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrJ376bW_kQ&list=PLjsZ3KrTlZoxAJOxA1DJIftwGf6zuxGw6&index=2 Following Warren Buffett stock picking has made more than a few investors very wealthy so it’s no wonder that the quarterly 13-F from released by Berkshire Hathaway is big news. Analysts and investors pore over the report for a look into the Warren Buffett portfolio for long-term investments in great companies. But a recent group of Buffett investments has analysts scratching their heads. Buffett has put almost 5% of the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio in an industry that has always been trouble for investors. In fact, as recent as 2013, he was calling this industry a death trap for investors. At the 2013 shareholder meeting, asked if Berkshire would ever consider adding another airline to its investments, Buffett warned that the industry was, “a labor-intensive, capital-intensive, largely commodity-type business.” And went on to say, “It’s been a death trap for investors ever since Orville took off.” So why is Warren Buffett investing in airlines? What does he see that other investors have missed? What has changed his mind on these stocks? In this video, I’ll review the airlines following Warren Buffet’s rules of investing and share my two favorite stocks in the industry. We’ll look at potential catalysts for investment returns as well as some challenges in the space. We’re looking into the Warren Buffett portfolio in this five-part series. We’re looking at Buffett’s biggest investments, his favorite industries and even his worst investment. We’ll look at the stocks Buffett believes in, why he loves them and how you can use all this to find your own investments. - What’s inside the Warren Buffett portfolio? - Why Warren Buffett has come 180 degrees on these stocks - The four stocks Buffett is betting on in airlines - Why I think a few stocks could be flying higher from here - My two favorite airline stocks in the Warren Buffett portfolio SUBSCRIBE to create the financial future you deserve with videos on beating debt, making more money and making your money work for you. https://peerfinance101.com/FreeMoneyVideos Join the Facebook communities: Personal Finance - https://www.facebook.com/peerfinance101/ Investing - https://www.facebook.com/mystockmarketbasics/ Making Money - https://www.facebook.com/myworkfromhomemoney/ Joseph Hogue, CFA spent nearly a decade as an investment analyst for institutional firms and banks. 4 Key Financial Ratios for Banks - Banking Stocks Fundamental Analysis | Part 2

24:15
4 Key Financial Ratios for Banks i.e. fundamental analysis for banking stocks are as follows 1. Financial Leverage or Equity Multiplier 2. Return on Assets 3. Return on Equity 4. NIM or Net Interest Margin These are profitability ratios or risk ratios. With the help of these 4 Financial Ratios for Banks, you can decide which banking stocks are fundamentally strong or weak. 1. Financial Leverage or Equity Multiplier: This ratio is calculated by dividing total capital or asset to net worth of the bank. The maximum value is 15. If this value exceeds 15 then it implies that bank is taking a high risk by accepting more deposits. 2. Return on Assets: It is the profitability ratio arrived by dividing Net Profit / Total Assets. The idea value is 1% or more than that. 3. Return on Equity: Net Profit divided by Net Worth is Return on Equity. The idea value is 15% or more. You can also calculate by multiplying Equity Multiplier and Return on Assets 4. NIM or Net Interest Margin: This is a very important financial ratio. You can calculate by (Interest Earned - Interest Expended) divided by Total Assets. The max value is 3% i.e. higher NIM means the bank is disbursing more loans to improve NIM and it reduces the return on assets. It is not considered a good sign. Volatile Investment Banks and Brokerage Firms to Add to Your Portfolio

01:44
With many banks reporting earnings last week, we decided to check Quant Ratings to see if there were any stocks worth investing in. Citigroup's earnings beat expectations on account of lower legal expenses. On the other hand, Goldman Sachs' earnings came in below expectations on account of higher legal expenses. However, Citigroup and Goldman Sachs both beat analyst revenue expectations, which is a bullish sign for bank stocks, and that should be the narrative through 2016. Here are some of the best volatile banks and brokerage firms TheStreet Quant Ratings says you should consider looking at. Number 4 is Charles Schwab Corporation. With a 'B ' rating, the company's strengths can be seen in its revenue growth and expanding profit margins. 3rd is, TD Ameritrade Holding Corporation. With an 'A-' rating TD Ameritrade thrives in its solid stock price performance and expanding profit margins. 2nd is Goldman Sachs Group. This rating is also an 'A-.' The company flourishes in its revenue growth and attractive valuation levels. Number 1 is Raymond James Financial. With an 'A+' rating, the company's strengths can be seen in its revenue growth and solid stock price performance. TheStreet Ratings are algorithmic stock picks based on 32 major data points. Investment Banking Areas Explained: Advisory Services

07:00
The next type of investment banking services we will examine are advisory services, comprising assistance in transactions, like mergers and acquisitions (known as M&A) and debt restructurings. As we already said, M&A stands for Mergers and Acquisitions. In every M&A process, there are at least two parties. One of the companies is called the Buyer or the Buying company, and the other one is called the Target, which is the firm acquired. The Buyer company can offer a compensation to the Target company’s shareholders in several ways. They can offer a cash compensation, a stock package of the new entity, or a combination of both. The technical name of the amount paid is called “consideration.” There are several reasons M&A deals play an important role in a company’s life. Top managers understand that, sometimes, it is cheaper to acquire something that has been already created, rather than trying to generate it internally. In addition, businesses are so complimentary that their combination can unlock a great deal of savings, efficiencies, and opportunities. We will focus on these aspects in the chapter dedicated to the mechanics of M&A services. Why do companies need help when acquiring other companies? Investment bankers are ideally positioned to provide valuable M&A insights to their clients, as they know their business and the industry in which they operate. Sometimes, an investment bank advises several firms from an industry and can gain perspective through multiple points of view. Besides M&A, many investment banks engage in restructuring services. These services are necessary when a firm cannot service its debt and is in danger of going bankrupt. I’m sure you can imagine how tough it is to work on these transactions and assist companies in deep trouble. What leads to the distress of a company? Why would a company borrow money it can’t repay? Well, the simple answer is that things change, and sometimes, unforeseen circumstances can materialize. Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11

10:36
So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) In this lecture, Professor Shiller introduces mean-variance portfolio analysis, as originally outlined by Harry Markowitz, and the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) that has been the cornerstone of modern financial theory. Professor Shiller commences with the history of the first publicly traded company, The United East India Company, founded in 1602. Incorporating also the more recent history of stock markets all over the world, he elaborates on the puzzling size of the equity premium. very high historical return of stock market investments. After introducing the notion of an Efficient Portfolio Frontier, he covers the concept of the Tangency Portfolio, which leads him to the Mutual Fund Theorem. Finally, the consideration of equilibrium in the stock market leads him to the Capital Asset Pricing Model, which emphasizes market risk as the determinant of a stock's return. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Financing Rental Properties The Right Way

11:41
Financing rental properties the right way is a video about the two most commonly used ways to finance rental properties for real estate investors. The first way to finance a rental property is Investor A who purchases a $100,000 property and leaves $20,000 in the deal. He starts with $100,000 capital to invest. After 5 houses leaving in $20,000 this investor will run out of money. Investor B finances his rental properties using the BRRRR method which stands for Buy Rehab Rent Refinance Repeat. You are buying a house at a discounted rate and then forcing the appreciation upwards and value up to where the house is appraised at $100,000. So say you bought it for $50,000 then had $20,000 in repairs and then $10,000 in carrying, financing, and closing costs your total liability is now $80,000. The bank will lend you $80,000 or 80% of the $100,000 appraised value loan to value. Now you have a financed house and your original capital to reinvest. You can do as many rent houses as you want now. financing rental properties I buying rentals I rental properties I landlords I financing houses I cash flow I rent houses I Connor Steinbrook I Investor Army I calculating rental numbers. How to become a Millionaire Investing 10$ a Day: Million Dollar Stock Portfolio

09:04
Investing $10 a day how long will it take to have a million dollar stock portfolio? Today I answer that question and then backtest the data against one of the simplest diversified investments a person can make: investing in the SPY ETF. If I had started investing $10 a day back in 1993 would the value of my investment perform how I had expected? Would it be worth more? Simple stock investment strategies have made many people rich. The key is keeping the cost of investing low and I cover that topic here today. Beginning investors often ask me what to avoid. Mutual funds are helping the banks get rich and keeping the investor’s money from growing by overcharging. Taking advantage of dividend growth investing will help people that are looking at investing $100, investing, $10000 or anywhere i between.
