Nvidia Optimus graphics are always a bit of a pain to use in Linux. Here I'll show you how to install the driver, and be able to switch between both GPU's. There's also some discussion thrown in there, and some questions! My system runs a GTX 960M. Install Nvidia Drivers: Ubuntu 18.04 - Best Method - 2019 - Debian - Fastest Boot Times
Please subscribe -Youtube pretty much makes you have over 1000 subs now This tutorial was made for the GTX 1050, GTX 1060, GTX 1070, GTX 1080, GTX 1080 Ti, and GTX TITAN X. However it will work with any Nvidia card. https://interwebaesthetics.com ***Linux mint users need to run the command "sudo service mdm stop" in place of "sudo service lightdm stop"*** UPDATE: I have updated the commands in here with the most recent driver Nvidia recommends for the GTX950-GTX TITAN X This guide will help you set up your Nvidia graphics card even if you boot to a blank sceen or are completely locked out of your GUI. Commands: Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 at log-in screen (type in user-name and password into command line) *No Apple Keyboards* (You may be able to change that in the keyboard settings, but it might be a little harder without GUI) sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf blacklist amd76x_edac blacklist vga16fb blacklist nouveau blacklist rivafb blacklist nvidiafb blacklist rivatv sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia* sudo service lightdm stop (for Mint its "sudo service mdm stop") without qoutes cd ~/Downloads wget us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/375.39/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-375.39.run sudo chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-375.39.run sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-375.39.run sudo nvidia-xconfig sudo update-initramfs -u sudo reboot Booting to blank screen and don't even get to the log in page? Try this... Press "e" at grub menu to edit the boot options. (adding "nomodeset" to your grub boot options right after "quiet splash"near the bottom line will help you) **** Sometimes after updating your OS you will need to repeat this process minus the whole blacklisting the drivers part.**** That is everything you need to know about Nvidia drivers in Ubuntu, Hope I helped someone. Install Nvidia Driver on Ubuntu 16.04 (GUI Method for Beginners)
A quick tutorial video for installing the Nvidia proprietary driver on Ubuntu 16.04. Recommended that you watch the video in at least 720p for clarity of text. I have included English subtitles to assist you, just enable it in CC. This video is meant for beginners who have just done a fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 on their computers and have an Nvidia graphics card. Step-by-step: 1. Make sure you have an Internet Connection. 2. Run the Software Updater in Ubuntu at least once. 3. Open the Ubuntu dash by either pressing the Ubuntu Icon or by pressing the Windows key on your keyboard. Search for 'Additional Drivers'. 4. Select any Nvidia binary driver that is available. Selecting a higher number is preferable over a lower numbered one. Click 'Apply Changes'. 5. Once it's done, restart Ubuntu. 6. You're done! To check that it installed successfully, open Ubuntu's dash. Search for 'Nvidia'. If you have the Nvidia X Server Settings program, your installation is successful. Whilst I specifically mention the 1000 series graphics cards in this video, this video is applicable to Nvidia graphics cards as far back as the 500 series. Please note, if you're using an Optimus laptop things may be different. I cannot assist you here as Nvidia's Optimus support is different for each card generation. My main computer rig specs: CPU - Intel i7-4770 3.4Ghz GPU - Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB RAM - 16GB DDR3 ADATA 1600MHz OS - Ubuntu 16.04 64Bit/Windows 10 Pro 64Bit (Dual Boot) Video recorded using: Media Express Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4k Audacity 2.1.2 Blue Yeti Mic Video edited using the following software: KDENLIVE 15.12.3 GIMP 2.8.16 Download Ubuntu 16.04 and 16.10 for free: http://www.ubuntu.com/ Download GIMP 2.8.16 for free: http://www.gimp.org/ My small development blog: techpromad.wordpress.com My alias in ubuntuforums.org: myromance123 About me: I'm just a Malaysian, who loves Ubuntu and Linux, and more so gaming!

Pop!_OS vs Ubuntu 18.10 | Comparison & Gaming Benchmarks
Let's compare Ubuntu 18.10 to Pop OS 18.10 and see how they do for resource usage and gaming performance! System Specs: CPU: AMD FX-8350 Eight-Core @ 4.00GHz GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 2048MB RAM: Kingston HyperX 16GB MOBO: ASUS 970 PRO GAMING/AURA I'm still experimenting with formats for these Benchmark Comparison videos. Let me know if you love em or hate em! Pop_OS is effectively a clone of Ubuntu with some extra software sources and custom daemons tossed in. It's a Linux distribution made by the folks at System76 who are well known for their hardware (Laptops). PopOS comes in two flavors, an LTS version based on Ubuntu 18.04LTS, and a version based on whatever non-LTS version of Ubuntu is out at the time. #AMD or #Nvidia graphics - which is the dominant #GPU on Linux? We'll look at 4 sets of benchmarks to determine which GPU is the better choice on Linux. I think everyone who uses Linux for gaming is aware of AMD's foul reputation for driver support on Linux. Now that I have both AMD and Nvidia cards, I can compare them side by side. And I'll say that installing AMD drivers on Linux makes installing Nvidia drivers look like a joke. As far as raw gaming performance goes, Nvidia clearly has the upper hand. In the synthetic GPU performance benchmarks, the AMD card did quite well. In the actual gaming performance benchmarks, the AMD GPU fell down and never got back up. #AMDVSNVIDIA ⬇︎Social Links ⬇︎ ✔︎ My Website: http://www.egee.io ✔︎ Twitter: https://twitter.com/egee_irl ✔︎ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/egee_irl/ ---- ⬇︎ System Specs ⬇︎ ✔︎ OS: Ubuntu 16.04: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop ✔︎ Motherboard:MSI A88XM Gaming: http://amzn.to/29OQeP6 ✔︎ CPU: A10-7850k: http://amzn.to/29rmTtB ✔︎ GPU: R7 360: http://amzn.to/29tLj4A ✔︎ RAM: Kingston HyperX 8gb: http://amzn.to/29SiRHP ✔︎ SSD: Samsung 850 EVO: http://amzn.to/29BABbA ✔︎ HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm: http://amzn.to/29SjfpI ✔︎ Input: Steam Controller: http://amzn.to/29ufZmo ✔︎ Capture Device: Elgato Game Capture HD60: http://amzn.to/2aiPxup

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Installation & Game Play: Linux & Windows
In this video we upgrade from the GTX 1070 to the GTX 1080 and jump into some game-play to see the FPS difference. We play Doom 2016 with Vulkan drivers in Windows and Ubuntu 16.10. Please note that I recorded this video immediately after installation and was unable to get OBS to cooperate. I will need to invest in some recording hardware to properly capture game-play as OBS is not cutting it. If you have any suggestions please provide below. With that said you will see screen-tearing, and jumping in both Windows and Linux that did not exist on my screen but OBS recorded it that way.

Installing & Testing AMDGPU-Pro Drivers | Rx 460 on Ubuntu 16.04
Installing and testing out the AMDGPU-Pro drivers for my new ASUS ROG Strix RX460. Things started out pretty bad when Mesa & the normal AMDGPU driver was unable to identify the new GPU. It almost seemed like the GPU was DOA. One thing I don't understand is why the AMDGPU-Pro drivers requires uses to go to the AMD website, download it, and install it by hand. Why on earth isn't it at least an deb file? It really should be in the semi-official graphics drivers PPA. For example, I couldn't ask a non-technical user to install these drivers. Amazingly enough, the GPU pulled through and I was able to get the display drivers installed. I did notice that the Catalyst/Crimson control center was missing. Hopefully AMD will fork the Windows version and make some sort of GUI tool available for Linux. I tested a few games. Rust & Ballistic Overkill are native Linux games, Skyrim is a Windows game via Wine, and Paladins is a Windows game via VMware. Overall I am somewhat disappointed with the performance: Rust showed a fair amount of stuttering that you can see in the video. Stuttering like that will get you killed in a fire fight. Performance on Skyrim was quite low. Watching back the video, I'd say I averaged about 20 frames per second, which is totally unacceptable. Paladins was surprisingly OK despite the graphical glitches, however I would have liked to see better performance. ⬇︎Social Links ⬇︎ ✔︎ Discord: https://discord.gg/tVyBHAU ✔︎ Website: http://www.egee.io ✔︎ Twitter: https://twitter.com/egee_irl ✔︎ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/egee_irl/ ---- ⬇︎ System Specs ⬇︎ ✔︎ OS: Ubuntu 16.04: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop ✔︎ Motherboard:MSI A88XM Gaming: http://amzn.to/29OQeP6 ✔︎ CPU: A10-7850k: http://amzn.to/29rmTtB ✔︎ GPU: R7 360: http://amzn.to/29tLj4A ✔︎ RAM: Kingston HyperX 8gb: http://amzn.to/29SiRHP ✔︎ SSD: Samsung 850 EVO: http://amzn.to/29BABbA ✔︎ HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm: http://amzn.to/29SjfpI ✔︎ Input: Steam Controller: http://amzn.to/29ufZmo ✔︎ Capture Device: Elgato Game Capture HD60: http://amzn.to/2aiPxup

SOCIAL LINKS: Twitter: www.twitter.com/osirez Facebook: www.facebook.com/OsirezTech ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COOLBITS: The Coolbits value is the sum of its component bits in the binary numeral system. The component bits are: 1 (bit 0) - Enables overclocking of older (pre-Fermi) cores on the Clock Frequencies page in nvidia-settings. 2 (bit 1) - When this bit is set, the driver will "attempt to initialize SLI when using GPUs with different amounts of video memory". 4 (bit 2) - Enables manual configuration of GPU fan speed on the Thermal Monitor page in nvidia-settings. 8 (bit 3) - Enables overclocking on the PowerMizer page in nvidia-settings. Install Demon Stone Retail On Ubuntu 14.04 Linux with PlayOnLinux
A short beginner-friendly guide on setting up Demon Stone in PlayOnLinux on Ubuntu! Pre-requisites to following this guide: 1. You must have a retail copy/disc of Demon Stone 2. You must have your graphics drivers installed (AMD, Nvidia) This guide can work for Ubuntu 12.04, 12.10, 13.04, 13.10, 14.04 and so on as long as you have access to PlayOnLinux 4.2 or newer. You will also need Wine 1.7.30 or newer. For the professionals/veteran users of Wine, all you need is Wine 1.7.30 combined with your proprietary drivers. The prefix is clean, there isn't any need for additional installations. Summarized Step-by-Step: 1. Open PlayOnLinux. 2. Click on Install. 3. Click "Install a non-listed program". 4. Go through the menus, name the drive anything. 5. Tick "Use another version of Wine" and "Configure Wine". 6. Select Wine 1.7.30 (or newer). 7. Select "32 bits windows installation". 8. In Wine Configuration, go to Graphics tab. Tick "Emulate a virtual desktop" and set it to any resolution you want (for windowed mode). 9. Click Browse and select CD-ROM: Demon_Stone 10. After installation is done, select DemonLaunch.exe from the list to make a shortcut. Name it anything you want. 13. Start Demon Launch from the list, and play! Note: No crack is necessary! However, it's doable if you don't like to play by using the disc. This works out-of-the-box with my wired 360 controller. Older Ubuntu versions or other distros may experience different results due to the joystick driver available. WARNING: I have no idea if this works for AMD and Intel graphics users. This may only work for Nvidia users. Please share your experience in the comments so others know. Which is nice.. but then you realize its really impressive once you see whats going on in the background.. Running Intel quad core cpu with 3x nvidia 8800GTX's - its a 3way sli motherboard but the cards are all running independently. (Complete specs are listed below). Had to use xserver-xgl to get it working correctly. Each vertical row of monitors (3) is running in a twinview configuration- then I use xinerama to combine those 3 virtual monitors together. Tie it all together with another Fake xinerama patch that forces windows to maximize to each monitor and you have once nice setup.. I'll post more videos and blog a breakdown of the workstation later - we documented the workstation build with photos so it should make for a good write-up. Nuclear Dawn Gameplay On Ubuntu Linux (Native)
Gameplay of Nuclear Dawn on Ubuntu 13.10, with maxed out graphics running at 1920x1080. [Only Anti-Aliasing is disabled] In this video I am playing the beta of Nuclear Dawn. Whilst still quite buggy, the latest update renders the game playable! I even get to play a match against other known Linux Youtubers! Nuclear Dawn is now available for Linux and is sold on Steam for anyone wishing to purchase it! It's on sale at the time of this video, but it's still in BETA. Couple of bugs I have experienced: 1. Mouse input messed up (enabled/disable mouse filter to fix) 2. Unable to chat using y,u,i 3. Hangs on black screen when exiting 4. AA makes the screen blotchy Another fun high end game for Linux! Worth the purchase, seriously fun. Learning curve is a bit steep though. $70 New and Used Media PC Build Nvidia GT710, 32GB SSD, Athlon x2, Ubuntu Mate
Today I am going to try to cobble together a low-end media PC with a budget of $70. I am using a Emachines W3644 as the base for this build. I bought this PC for $5 dollars at a garage sale and I swapped out the stock 1GB of DDR2 and Sempron CPU with 4GB of DDR2 and an Athlon X2 4400+ @ 2.3Ghz I had laying around in the back. To compliment this configuration, I purchased a Nvidia GT710 GPU, 32GB king diann SSD, and TP link wireless dongle off Amazon, all of these parts together totaled ~$65 USD. The media box will be running Ubuntu Mate 16.04 but I will be using Windows 10 to run a couple benchmarks. Overall this build was a success, however I was a tad bit disappointed with the performance of the GT710 when it came to the playback of 1080P video at 60FPS. If I could do it all over again I would have either spent a little more and bought a better GPU of Amazon or I would have bought a better used card off eBay (such as the 750TI). It is also possible that the Athlon x2 is the bottleneck in this case, as many have told me that they have a GT710 and it is able to play back 1080p @ 60fps just fine. Despite this little hiccup the system is still perfectly capable of playing back 1080p video at 30fps without issue and it can even handle some lighter games such as Minecraft.
