Sick Leave was passed in Washington, Oregon, Rhode Island, and New York have new sick leave laws The California Equal Pay act prohibits pay history inquiries and discrimination against military persons, and workers based on gender, sexual orientation, and gender expression. Delaware and Massachusetts have equal pay laws that prohibit asking an applicant for their pay history and paying different pays based on gender. Nevada has a new domestic violence leave law that affects employers and provides 160 hours of leave too. In addition, several states passed laws requiring employers to accommodate pregnant employees.

It can cause the other person to subconsciously assume that this is a theoretical question - If you ever want someone to feel uncomfortable, look at the middle of their forehead during the conversation. - If someone you're talking to is trying to avoid answering a question, just make a pause in the conversation while still keeping eye contact. - When asking a question that you want an affirmative answer to, try to nod subtly as you make your request. It sounds bizarre, but it really does help you easily get out of bed feeling refreshed. - If a person tries to pull you into an argument or some drama, say something nice to them. The ol’ “kill ‘em with kindness” trick really does stop them in their tracks. - If you have that one lazy person on your team that slows the whole work process down, don't give them tasks by saying "Do this." It’s better to say "Start with this." - If someone is staring at you in the subway (happens all-too often, right?), just look at their shoes. Don't give up, keep gazing! It’ll drive them crazy! - If someone has done something wrong, but you don’t wanna sound too accusing, change the way you construct your sentences. - If you didn't get a good night's sleep, tell yourself that you did. I know, it sounds like nonsense, but it does work 100% if you say it with meaning! - People are better at remembering what happened at the beginning and end of the day. To find out more, visit http://therulesofwar.org ******** Rules of War in a Nutshell - script Since the beginning, humans have resorted to violence as a way to settle disagreements. Yet through the ages, people from around the world have tried to limit the brutality of war. It was this humanitarian spirit that led to the First Geneva Convention of 1864,and to the birth of modern International Humanitarian Law. Setting the basic limits on how wars can be fought, these universal laws of war protect those not fighting, as well as those no longer able to. To do this, a distinction must always be made between who or what may be attacked, and who or what must be spared and protected. - CIVILIANS - Most importantly, civilians can never be targeted. To do so is a war crime. “When they drove into our village, they shouted that they were going to kill everyone. I was so scared, I ran to hide in the bush. I heard my mother screaming. I thought I would never see her again.” Every possible care must be taken to avoid harming civilians or destroying things essential for their survival. They have a right to receive the help they need. - DETAINEES - “The conditions prisoners lived in never used to bother me. People like him were the reason my brother was dead. He was the enemy and was nothing to me. But then I realized that behind bars, he was out of action and no longer a threat to me or my family.” The laws of war prohibit torture and other ill-treatment of detainees, whatever their past. They must be given food and water and allowed to communicate with loved ones. This preserves their dignity and keeps them alive. - SICK & WOUNDED - Medical workers save lives, sometimes in the most dangerous conditions. “Several fighters from both sides had been critically wounded in a fierce battle and we were taking them to the closest hospital. At a checkpoint, a soldier threatened us, demanding that we only treat his men. Time was running out and I was afraid they were all going to die.” Medical workers must always be allowed to do their job and the Red Cross or Red Crescent must not be attacked. The sick or wounded have a right to be cared for, regardless of whose side they are on. - LIMITS TO WARFARE - Advances in weapons technology has meant that the rules of war have also had to adapt. Because some weapons and methods of warfare don't distinguish between fighters and civilians, limits on their use have been agreed. In the future, wars may be fought with fully autonomous robots. But will such robots ever have the ability to distinguish between a military target and someone who must never be attacked? No matter how sophisticated weapons become it is essential that they are in line with the rules of war. International Humanitarian Law is all about making choices that preserve a minimum of human dignity in times of war, and makes sure that living together again is possible once the last bullet has been shot.

Remember Sherlock Holmes? He couldn’t name all the planets of the Solar system — this was not because he missed school or something like that, but because he was too smart to have such irrelevant information in his memory. He deliberately erased facts he would never need. This is what your brain does: it protects you from overloading with information. That’s why all new data is stored in the short-term memory, not the long-term one. So, if you don’t repeat it or use it, you forget it very quickly. A German psychologist, Hermann Ebbinghaus researched the memory and its mechanisms. He described the Forgetting Curve which shows that just one hour after learning something new we forget more than half of the learned information. One day later we remember only about 30% percent. Well, you see where this is going. - There is a memorization technique called «Spaced repetition». To keep some information in your head for a longer time, you need to try to put it into your long-term memory. Forced memorization is not very effective in this case because your brain can’t make sense of the information quickly and form strong associations. Here it all depends on the reason why you are learning something. - To memorize something quickly, repeat the information right after learning it. The second repetition should be after 15-20 minutes. You don’t need to return to the information between repetitions — just rest and do something different. Let your brain relax. Repeat the learned material the third time after 6-8 hours. BOOK REVIEW EUROPEAN EMPLOYMENT LAWS: A Comparative Guide Second Edition By Stephen Hardy and Mark Butler Spiramus ISBN: 978-1904905-61-5 www.spiramus.com FOR EU LAWYERS, HR PRACTITIONERS, ACADEMICS AND EURO-BUFFS: AN ACCESSIBLE, READABLE OUTLINE OF EMPLOYMENT LAW IN EACH OF THE 27 EU MEMBER STATES An Appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers Before the first edition of his book was written, the researching of its subject matter not to mention the actual writing of it was considered 'impossible', what with at least (at that time) 25 EU member states to contend with, with their differing traditions, languages and legal systems. However, putting together an account of the employment laws of all member countries of the EU and presenting them in the form of a readable, accessible narrative is precisely what the two authors have achieved -- a feat to which Eleanor Sharpston QC, Advocate General ECJ, has rightly paid tribute. Obviously the book cannot deliver detailed legal advice on specific matters in its less than 300 pages of text. It is, rather, an excellent starting off point for those who wish to explore a particular issue or aspect of European employment law, and/or the employment laws of particular European states. The authors therefore refer to it as 'a comparative guide' rather than a 'definitive' guide, which they modestly insist it is not. This new Second Edition published 2010 by Spiramus begins by reviewing the ways in which labour law has evolved within the EU...it examines the varying regional approaches to employment and social welfare...and it considers the numerous pressures for change in line with the controversial process of creating 'social' Europe. The handiest part of the book is the summary in outline of said employment regulations in each of the now 27 EU member states, from Austria to the United Kingdom. There's a further section covering future EU enlargement if, or when the two aspirant states, Turkey and Croatia join the EU. Check the table of contents for the sub-categories with which you are concerned, from contracts to working time, to pay to dismissals. It is enlightening to be able to compare, almost at a glance, the differences and similarities in employment legislation between the diverse member states. It's also heartening to note that, as a requirement of EU membership, each member state has had to bring its system of employment laws -- despite variations --into line with EU standards. So, if you are an employment lawyer or HR practitioner faced with cross-border employment issues, or in charge of employment policy in a European country, this book will help you understand and (it's hoped) avoid the various pitfalls and obstacles inherent in the many regional variations in employment law and practice throughout the EU. And for further research, the book provides useful lists of cases, sources and relevant websites to make it the accessible, readable outline of the subject that it undoubtedly is.

Through experimentation. But even if you experiment, it doesn't guarantee success because of the three unseen laws of SEO. Most people think SEO is about building the backlinks, doing these on-page SEO tactics, and all the advice that I'm telling you and other experts are telling you. But the issue is, if you're not leveraging the other things that people aren't talking about that Google is really focusing on, especially in the future, you're not going to do well. And the first one is brand queries. Eric Schmidt once said a quote and he was talking about brands are the solution. That's how you separate the good companies from the bad companies. And I'm butchering his quote because I haven't memorized it. If you built a brand you're going to be better off. You're hearing about fake new all over the web. It's not just a problem with Facebook. It's a problem with Google and every social site out there as well. So they wanna focus on the good quality content. The good sites that aren't pushing out this junk that's duping people. If you use Google Trends and you type in your brand name versus any of the other competitors, you'll see how popular your brand is. In essence, Google is giving you the free tool that'll show you if your brand is going up and to the right, is flat, or is going down. When I wasn't getting too many brand queries, I had the hardest time ranking for the query ‘online marketing’. Without building any extra links, without changing any of my content, the moment my brand queries started increasing, I shot up to the top of page one for the term online marketing. The second unseen law of SEO I have for you is user experience. If you're user experience sucks, people go to your site, they bounce back because they don't find what they're looking for. You're not going to rank well in the long run. Google's using what they call user metrics. Time on site, dwell time, are people hitting the back button right when they come to your site. Is it a lot of pages views per visitor? If users aren't happy with the experience on your website, you're not going to do well. So don't just think about SEO's, optimize your site, building links, writing amazing content. You also need a good product and a good service. Having a good product and service helps with the user experience. People like Dropbox and Slack, companies like that, have done well not because of their SEO first. Even Airbnb, not because of their SEO first. They've all done well because they've tried to create the best user experience for people. The third unseen law of SEO is, SEO's going to adapt and as long as you adapt with it you're going to be fine but most people aren't. I talk about things like voice search. According to Comscore, in 2020, half the searches will be voice search. But yet, no one really cares to read about that or talk about it because voice search isn't that appealing to people. Google Home is connected to your whole home, even your microwave, your oven. As you're cooking on your oven, you can end up saying, "Hey Google, what are some recipes for pasta?" I'm making it up, I don't cook but you get the point. That'll end up pulling from search results. If you don't adapt with technology and where the world is going, you're going to be left behind and you're not going to rank well in the long run. So as long as you follow those three rules, you'll do well. Quantum Physics Explained
Quantum mechanics is the branch of physics relating to the very small. It results in what may appear to be some very strange conclusions about the physical world. At the scale of atoms and electrons, many of the equations of classical mechanics, which describe how things move at everyday sizes and speeds, cease to be useful. In classical mechanics, objects exist in a specific place at a specific time. However, in quantum mechanics, objects instead exist in a haze of probability; they have a certain chance of being at point A, another chance of being at point B and so on. Three revolutionary principles Quantum mechanics (QM) developed over many decades, beginning as a set of controversial mathematical explanations of experiments that the math of classical mechanics could not explain. It began at the turn of the 20th century, around the same time that Albert Einstein published his theory of relativity, a separate mathematical revolution in physics that describes the motion of things at high speeds. Unlike relativity, however, the origins of QM cannot be attributed to any one scientist. Rather, multiple scientists contributed to a foundation of three revolutionary principles that gradually gained acceptance and experimental verification between 1900 and 1930. They are: Quantized properties: Certain properties, such as position, speed and color, can sometimes only occur in specific, set amounts, much like a dial that "clicks" from number to number. This challenged a fundamental assumption of classical mechanics, which said that such properties should exist on a smooth, continuous spectrum. To describe the idea that some properties "clicked" like a dial with specific settings, scientists coined the word "quantized." Particles of light: Light can sometimes behave as a particle. This was initially met with harsh criticism, as it ran contrary to 200 years of experiments showing that light behaved as a wave; much like ripples on the surface of a calm lake. Light behaves similarly in that it bounces off walls and bends around corners, and that the crests and troughs of the wave can add up or cancel out. Added wave crests result in brighter light, while waves that cancel out produce darkness. A light source can be thought of as a ball on a stick being rhythmically dipped in the center of a lake. The color emitted corresponds to the distance between the crests, which is determined by the speed of the ball's rhythm. Waves of matter: Matter can also behave as a wave. This ran counter to the roughly 30 years of experiments showing that matter (such as electrons) exists as particles. For Human Resource professionals the hiring process is a balancing act of juggling state and federal laws and performing due diligence when screening employees. Throw in the sluggish job market, and HR professionals are now dealing with scrutiny over their use of credit and criminal reports to screen new hires. A recent Huffington Post article explains that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission wants employers to curtail their use of criminal and credit background reports because they say the use of these reports unfairly discriminates against Hispanic and African American candidates. The article then goes on to explain that when criminal histories are taken into account, the employers must also consider the nature of the job, the seriousness of the offense and how long ago it occurred. We agree with the EEOC's advice. It would be unrealistic for employers to suspend their use of credit and criminal reports...especially with the growing threat of negligent hiring litigation. However, we want to add a bit of our own advice about the hiring process. Number one, an employer may not disqualify a candidate solely because they have a criminal record, that is considered discrimination. However, candidates must realize that some states require background checks especially if the employee is working around the disabled or children. Secondly, employers are not allowed to make hiring decisions based on juvenile records. There are also statue of limitations on reporting civil judgments, arrest history and bankruptcy records. Lastly, employers have the right to conduct a criminal background check before making an employment decision. However, they must ask the candidates permission before the check is performed. The changes are part of an unpopular programme of welfare-state trims that Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder launched last year in efforts to boost the economy. In June (2004) unemployment stood at 10.2 percent or 4.233 million (m) people out of work. Unemployment support will be cut to 331 euros (410 dollars) a month. The government also pays up to 220 euros (270 US dollars) rent support. Several eastern German states voted against the measure in the upper house, fearing that the planned benefit cuts will further weaken purchasing power in their region, where the unemployment rate is nearly 20 percent. Schroeder's government made concessions last week on the timing of the first payments, but has refused to abandon the law. Two of the people affected by the reform are Sigrid Breitschuh and Susanna Korn. 54 year old Breitschuh lost her job in 1991, 42 year old Korn in 2002. Neither has worked since. They live in Bernburg, near Magdeburg, in the former East Germany, and have been unable to find work there or elsewhere in Germany. Both are not very hopeful that the so-called Hartz reform will stimulate long term unemployed people to look for jobs. The two have created a website to inform other people about how their situation will change on January first. They want other people to protest and fight against the reform. But those againts the reforms are already making their feelings known. For the second Monday in a row, there were demonstrations across Germany billed by organisers as the most widespread yet in a summer of discontent. Around 15-thousand people protested in Magdeburg, where the protests began and 20-thousand took to the streets in the eastern city of Leipzig Rallies also were held in Berlin and in the eastern cities of Halle and Dessau. In all more than 60-thousand took part in demonstrations on Monday afternoon. Trump Wants New Libel Laws To Stop 'Horrible And False' Articles - Newsy
Transcript: In case you haven't noticed, Donald Trump does not like the media. He recently told a crowd in Texas he would stop newspapers like The New York Times from publishing unfavorable articles. "I'm going to open up our libel laws so that when they write purposefully negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money," Donald Trump said to a crowd in Fort Worth, Texas. The Times has published quite a few editorials painting Trump in a less than flattering light. But it's unlikely Trump would be able to win any lawsuit against the publication unless he managed to nominate someone to the Supreme Court who could work to overturn New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. The president is considered a public figure, and according to the New York Times Co. v. Sullivan precedent, public figures have to prove "actual malice" to win a libel case. That basically means the paper knowingly published a false or improperly researched statement. And since the press protections are rooted in the First Amendment, any unilateral executive actions Trump takes as president to alter those laws would likely overstep his constitutional authority. However, The Washington Post points out "Trump could simply use the bully pulpit to promote a culture of frivolous libel suits that ultimately wouldn't go anywhere but would force media companies to spend precious resources on defending themselves." But hey, at least Trump only threatened to sue the naysayers instead of potentially throwing them in jail like in Egypt, Turkey or China. Get it past the House of Lords, which has been achieved. And finally get a completely new bill onto the law books, namely the EU Withdrawal Agreement Bill. Please do not get this confused with the Withdrawal Act, which is already on the statute books. This has not been published yet so the public won't know what's actually in it, but it's what is most likely to be in it that will surprise people. According to the Institute for Government, once this Act becomes law it will, amongst other things: 1. Keep parts of the European Communities Act in force for the duration of the transition period. This will allow the UK to update its statute book to reflect new EU laws that come into force in the transition, and will preserve the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice. 2. Give the Withdrawal Agreement, and any EU law incorporated into the Withdrawal Agreement, a form of “supremacy” over UK law. 3. Set out a domestic process for the commencement of the Irish border backstop. Now, we are told that the EU Withdrawal Act passed into law last year, will repeal the European Communities Act 1972 (or ECA) to take us out of the EU so we can take control of our borders, laws and money. But what the Institute for Government is saying, is that some of the law contained in the ECA 1972 will have to be put back into force by this new bill when it becomes law. This new bill will repeal some of the Withdrawal Act that parliament only passed a few months ago. So we will still not have left the EU, but will have no representation! Then couple in the never-ending backstop and we are totally trapped. But Theresa May needs an Article 50 extension to get this new bill into law. Without an Article 50 extension she cannot ratify her Withdrawal Agreement. Fight that Article 50 extension with everything you've got! PERSPECTIVES | New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern paid her respects to the families of the fallen victims and she is now vowing to change gun laws in order to stop any further attempts of terrorism. How did Prime Minister Arden change the situation so quickly? Security analyst Amir Oren and our Bianca Zanini and Mohammad Al-Kassim discuss with host Tracy Alexander.  Story: New Zealand's prime minister vowed to toughen the country's gun laws after revealing Saturday that the man accused of murdering 49 people in two mosques legally purchased the arsenal of firearms used in the massacre.  Jacinda Ardern said the gunman, 28-year-old Australian Brenton Tarrant, obtained a 'Category A' gun licence in November 2017 and began purchasing the five weapons used in Friday's attacks in the southern city of Christchurch the following month. The firearms included two semi-automatic rifles, two shotguns and a lever-action weapon, she said, speaking to reporters in Wellington before heading to Christchurch. 'The mere fact... that this individual had acquired a gun licence and acquired weapons of that range, then obviously I think people will be seeking change, and I'm committing to that,' she said. 'While work is being done as to the chain of events that led to both the holding of this gun licence, and the possession of these weapons, I can tell you one thing right now -- our gun laws will change.' She confirmed that the gunman and two suspected associates who were also arrested had not been on the radar of any intelligence agencies, even though he had published a manifesto online indicating plans for attacks on Muslims. 'They were not on any watchlists either here or in Australia,' she said. 'The individual charged with murder had not come to the attention of the intelligence community, nor the police, for extremism,' she added. 'I have asked our agencies this morning to work swiftly on assessing whether there was any activity on social media or otherwise, that should have triggered a response. That work is already underway. 'Given global indicators around far-right extremism, our intelligence community has been stepping up their investigations in this area. Relaxed laws New Zealand tightened its gun laws to restrict access to semi-automatic rifles in 1992, two years after a mentally ill man shot dead 13 people in the southern town of Aramoana. But firearms laws are lax compared to neighbouring Australia, which enacted a strict gun control regime in the wake of a similar massacre in 1996, and most other developed nations outside of the United States. Anyone over 16 can apply for a New Zealand firearms licence, valid for 10 years after completing a safety course and a police background check. Most guns do not require registration under New Zealand's Arms Act and police do not know 'how many legally or illegally owned firearms there are in New Zealand,' according to a police statement last year. In 2014, police estimated there were up to 1.2 million legal firearms in civilian ownership, or around one for every four members of the public -- twice the per capita number of guns in Australia.Separate 'endorsements' are required to own semi-automatic weapons like those used in Friday's attack, as well as pistols and other restricted weapons. But police and firearms experts have pointed to several loopholes allowing owners to bypass registration of semi-automatics. Ardern noted the failure of several earlier attempts to reform gun laws and said a ban on semi-automatic weapons would be considered. A 1997 police review of gun laws called for such a ban, but attempts to update the Arms Act since 1992 have stalled in parliament.
