The victory of the underdog. The last minute penalty shot that wins the tournament. The training montage. Many people love to glorify victory on the field, cheer for teams, and play sports. But should we be obsessed with sports? Are sports as good for us as we make them out to be, or are they just a fun and entertaining pastime? Leah Lagos and Jaspal Ricky Singh show what science has to say on the matter. Lesson by Leah Lagos and Jaspal Ricky Singh, animation by Kozmonot Animation Studio.

When former college athlete Ed O’Bannon discovered that his name, image, and likeness were being used in a popular EA videogame, he sued the NCAA and other organizations for their use of his image for commercial purposes. Along with 20 other former college athletes, O’Bannon asserted that this use was without consent or compensation, and violated laws surrounding both intellectual property and antitrust. Are colleges and the NCAA collaborating to limit the value of college athletes’ name, image, and likeness? Or are the rules they create necessary to enable competition in college sports? Ed O’Bannon and legal experts explore the legal questions surrounding O’Bannon v. NCAA. As always, the Federalist Society takes no particular legal or public policy positions. All opinions expressed are those of the speakers. Featuring: -Ed O’Bannon, former UCLA & NBA Athlete -Prof. Michael A. One of the most common types of essays you will have to write at university as well as on the IELTS or TOEFL is a comparison essay. In this lesson, I will teach you some useful words that will help you to compare things. By the end of this video, you will be able to use terms such as "alike", "similar", "in the same way", "likewise", and more. Take my quiz at the end for more experience using these words. http://www.engvid.com/writing-6-ways-to-compare/ TRANSCRIPT Hello. My name is Emma, and in today's video, I am going to teach you some key words you can use when you talk about how things are the same or similar. Okay? So when you compare two things -- when you're comparing apples and oranges, there are some similarities. They're both fruits. When you're comparing shopping to skiing, when you're comparing a city to a country or the countryside -- there is a certain language we like to use when we're saying how these things are similar or the same. In this video, I'm going to teach you a bunch of expressions you can use when comparing two things to show their similarities. Okay? So this video is called "Talking about similarities". So for this video, I decided I wanted to do a theme. I wanted to look at how Canada and England are similar. In what ways are they very much alike? Okay? So each of my sentences are going to have to do with Canada and England, and we're going to look at how they're alike using these comparison words. So for those of you watching, if you are doing the TOEFL, these words are essential. If you are doing the IELTS -- very important vocabulary here. General English, you can use these at university for essays, college, or even just general conversation. So let's get started. Okay. So how are Canada and England the same? Well, I would say, first of all, both Canada and England have a queen. Both Canada and England have Queen Elizabeth. So one word we often use when we're talking about similarities is this word, "both". Both Canada and England have a queen. Both Canada and England have trees. Both Canada and England have cities. Okay? So there are a lot of different things you can compare. This is just one of them. Now, I want to say why I wrote the word "beginning" here. "Both" often comes at the beginning of a sentence. And notice how the construction is. We have both A and B. Another example, "Both cats and dogs are animals." "Both hamsters and mice are rodents." Okay? So we use this a lot when we're comparing. We can also say "like". In this case, we're not saying, "I like Canada" or "I like" -- you know, showing preference -- we're again showing similarity. "Like Canada, England has many immigrants." Canada has many immigrants. England has many immigrants. "Like Canada, England has many immigrants." And again, you'll notice "like" is at the beginning of the sentence. It's often -- not always, but often -- at the beginning. We have it followed by a noun. I could change this to something else. Imagine if I wanted to compare cats and dogs. "Like cats, dogs have fur." Okay? I could say that. If I'm comparing men and women, "Like women, men are human." Okay? It's not the greatest of comparisons, but you can use these types of words when you're comparing. Okay? So now, I have some other things I want to compare. In England, they speak English. In Canada, we also speak English. Not everybody, but many Canadians speak English. Some speak French, but a lot of people speak English. So I'm going to teach you some words you can use when comparing these two sentences. "In England, they speak English. Similarly, in Canada many people speak English, too. In comparison, in Canada many people also speak English. In the same way, in Canada many people speak English." And finally, another way similar to this but slightly different, "Likewise, in Canada many people speak English." So these are a little bit different from these ones. They all mean how they are the same. But you'll notice one of the differences here is these are followed by a comma. "Likewise, comma." And then, we have the rest of the sentence. These go at the beginning of the sentence. Okay? In case you can't tell, this is a period. So we have our first sentence, "In England, they speak English. Similarly, in Canada many people speak English." Okay? So you can use these in your writing. They would really, really help on your TOEFL, IELTS, or university essays to help you get a better mark.

We admire the most famous soccer (or football) players for their amazing sports skill, but, in fact, there’s another good reason to look up to them: their acts of incredible kindness. Stories of super stars helping children, the poor and the starving and doing other great things for charity will surely melt your heart. The Neymar Jr. Project Institute helps thousands of kids get a good education and provide them with physical activity facilities. In 2009, Didier Drogba donated $3 million for the reconstruction of a hospital in his hometown of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Messi’s foundation helped build 20 classrooms and get 1,600 children back to school in war-torn Syria. Along with Serena Williams, Messi worked in the “1 in 11” campaign to provide access to education to 58 million elementary-aged kids out of school in Nepal, Indonesia and Bangladesh. Beckham helped raise $185,500 for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children to prevent bullying in schools. Besides, the superstar donated all his wages when he played for Paris St. Germain. One of the greatest soccer players of all time comes from the rough back streets of Marseille, France. Zinedine “Zizou” Zidane hasn’t forgotten his troubled childhood and has been actively working to improve the life of a new generation contributing to initiatives in over 27 countries. Cristiano Ronaldo donated over $7,000,000 after the terrible 2015 earthquake in Nepal. He also sold his Golden Shoe Award and donated his Champions League bonus of over $720,000 to charity. Ronaldo is an official Save the Children's Ambassador and helps individual children and families as well. He also hosts and takes part in charity games on a regular basis. -The Didier Drogba Foundation is doing a lot to help impoverished communities in Ivory Coast and all over Africa, like giving local kids access to education and healthcare. -From his extensive charitable work with UNICEF to his Lionel Messi Foundation, which helps other foundations and organizations like those doing medical research in Spain and Argentina, Messi has done so much good for a lot of people. -Kuyt’s foundation supports 64 projects specializing in giving disabled kids a chance to take part in sports and helping homeless children. -When his team won the World Cup in 2014, Ozil donated all of his earnings for this victory. That money, around $370,000, was enough to sponsor surgeries for 23 kids in Brazil. -A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador with a special focus on Sports for Development and founding member of the Malaria No More UK Leadership Council, David Beckham has also done a lot with the Help for Heroes campaign, whose aim is aiding injured servicemen and -women coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq. -The Michael Essien Foundation works to provide health care and education facilities, libraries, clean drinking water, and public restrooms in his hometown of Awutu Breku, Ghana. -The Craig Bellamy Foundation’s biggest project was starting a football academy in Sierra Leone. It gave scholarships to local boys aged 10 to 13 with athletic and academic potential so that they could get a good education and play soccer. -Zidane regularly takes part in charity games, the most notable of which is the “Match against Poverty”, which brings together soccer stars from all over the world. -Childhood hunger and obesity, conserving biodiversity, cancer research, and funding a cancer center in his homeland of Portugal, seems like there’s no cause Ronaldo isn’t fighting for. The study of sports science traditionally incorporates areas of physiology (exercise physiology), psychology (sport psychology), anatomy, biomechanics, biochemistry and biokinetics. Sports scientists and performance consultants are growing in demand and employment numbers, with the ever-increasing focus within the sporting world on achieving the best results possible. Through the study of science and sport, researchers have developed a greater understanding on how the human body reacts to exercise, training, different environments and many other stimuli.

A significant growth opportunity exists for golf if it can attract more women, girls and families into playing the sport more often according to a new research report published by The R&A. Many countries are seeing a fall in the number of both males and females playing golf and the research report analyses the factors which affect whole family participation in the sport, including women and girls, and details a number of useful practical recommendations for national golf bodies and golf clubs to help them encourage more women and girls to play. The R&A commissioned the International Institute for Golf Education, based at the University Centre Myerscough, to carry out the research which brings together the findings of existing academic and industry research with the individual views of a wide-ranging group of golf experts. The key themes identified in the report, which was produced by Dr John Fry and Philip Hall, include: The importance of establishing the optimum environment for family participation by being aware of the make-up of the modern family A direct link between equality in sports participation and wider measures of gender equality such as women in influential decision-making positions in golf That parents are the chief factor underpinning families’ likelihood to play golf and that their motivations for their children taking part include having fun, improving health and developing friendships The increasing desire for golf to provide opportunities for socialising and to be adaptable and flexible given the time and cost constraints placed on the modern family The need for the sport to evolve to meet the demands of contemporary society and for clubs to encourage memorable events for their customers, as that memory itself or the ‘experience’, is increasingly replacing the ‘product’ of playing golf The research reflects The R&A’s continued drive to encourage more women, girls and families to play golf more regularly, working with its affiliates around the world to enhance golf’s appeal. Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, said, “The research demonstrates there is a tremendous opportunity for golf to grow its participation numbers and generate more income if it can attract more women, girls and families into playing the sport. “We know that more work needs to be done to achieve this outcome at a time when there are concerns about declining participation levels and this report provides useful actions and guidance for our affiliates and clubs that can lead to tangible, positive outcomes for golf.” Dr John Fry, added, “The report brings together for the first time in one place the key academic and industry research articles conducted on family sports participation. “The process involved searching scientific databases containing more than one million citations, peer-reviewed research papers and selecting the most appropriate evidence based studies that can help underpin strategies to increase participation in golf. “The research is supplemented with case studies of best practice, analysis from a number of industry experts and offers a series of practical actions which golf clubs can adopt.”

I freakin’ love science, and you probably freakin’ love science too – science brought us computers which then brought us youtube, and science brought us sugar that has no calories, and science brought us Neil Degrasse Tyson! But science has a big problem. It’s broken. Science thinks it’s kind of a big deal because of it’s academic journals and books and stuff. But whilst that used to work in the good old days when only certain people could publish stuff, in today’s digital world, anyone can publish stuff. DO you have a paper you want published in the National journal of biological sciences? You can, because I own that journal. I just went online to Hover and registered NatJBS and now i have a journal that sounds totally legit. SO you can see the problem here. There are more journals than ever before, spawning at a frightening rate! These online Journals don’t have a readership so they’ve done away with things like peer review, and even reading the papers it publishes, and just publish anything. the way they make their money is by charging a publication fee. Now you might ask, who would pay actual real money to get their paper published in a shit journal when they could just get it published in a legit paper for free? Well here’s the point, scientists need to get published in order to get promoted, and since it it’s really, really hard to get a paper published, publishing in these journals for the low low price of $799 seems like an awesome idea. Thats how a paper he original paper titled “Get me off your f—–g mailing list.” was accepted in the International Journal of Advanced Computer Technology. Not only did they publish it, but they sent the authors a reviewer report, that had graded the paper as “excellent” which is ridiculous because they claim to be a peer reviewed journal. And right now it’s an act of spectacularly willful denial by the entire scientific community to assume that Science system is still working properly. Now when i pitched this article to my producer Bec, she was like ‘academic journals?” that sounds so boring, why should we care? But the thing is this stuff really matters it means that anti-abortion advocates and gun lobbyists can make up fake data and get it published in legit sounding journals. I cannot tell you how many times people in the comments section have sent me links to this article about gun control - looks like a legitimate article doesn’t it - but it was written by a lawyer for the National Rifle Association (Don Kates) and a Canadian guy who wrote a book called - and I'm not even joking - “Manipulating Public Opinion”. The article was published in the Harvard Journal of Law & Public Policy - which sounds legit, but is actually a student-edited conservative magazine. But people think shitty studies like this are real science, published in real journals, and then they write articles with headings like “Harvard Gun Study: The More Guns, The Less Criminal Activity“ and then we wonder why we can’t get basic gun legislation passed by policy makers. LINK TO ARTICLE - http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/orgs/jlpp/Vol30_No2_KatesMauseronline.pdf it makes it impossible for the public to be able to work out the truth. It means drug companies can make get drugs passed that should never be passed, it means oil companies can continue to lie about climate change, and WORST OF ALL it reduces trust in science, In the words of “Kat Arney” - where nobody is prepared to pull out first, for fear of ruining it for everyone else. And if they’re not going to do anything about it then we have to! We can’t ignore them any longer. https://scholarlyoa.com/2014/11/20/bogus-journal-accepts-profanity-laced-anti-spam-paper/ https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/08/18/outbreak-of-fake-peer-reviews-widens-as-major-publisher-retracts-64-scientific-papers/ http://littleatoms.com/science/science-broken-heres-how-fix-it http://www.economist.com/news/briefing/21588057-scientists-think-science-self-correcting-alarming-degree-it-not-trouble http://www.snopes.com/harvard-flaw-review/ This video is presented by Jayde Lovell, edited by Janina Soriano, at Youtube Space NYC. Scrolling through our social media feeds feels like a harmless part of our daily lives. But is it actually as harmless at seems? According to social media expert Bailey Parnell, our growing and unchecked obsession with social media has unintended long term consequences on our mental health. As social media continues to become part of the fabric of modern life – the “digital layer” – abstinence is becoming less of an option. Bailey think it’s high time we learned to practice safe social before it’s too late. What are the common triggers? How are they affecting you over time? How can you create a more positive experience online? Bailey covers this and more in “Is Social Media Hurting Your Mental Health?” Bailey Parnell was recently named one of Canada's Top 100 Most Powerful Women. She is an award-winning digital marketer, public speaker and businesswoman with a talent for helping people tell better stories. Bailey recently founded SkillsCamp, a soft skills training company where they help people develop the essential skills needed for professional success. She also currently works in digital marketing at Ryerson University. Bailey is a frequent public speaker having spoken to more than 10 thousand people. In our concussion return to play (RTP) protocol, we have reduced premature returns to full activity by capturing and evaluating athlete exertion levels. Our protocol acts as a safety net to catch athletes at Central Michigan University (CMU) who are unable to meet exertional goals or whose symptoms return during the process, preventing them from moving to the next step of the protocol. The NCAA Injury Surveillance Program showed 1485 concussions sustained by 1410 student-athletes from the 2011-2012 through 2014-2015 academic years. The average annual risk for football athletes is 5.42% while the average number of concussions per football team in a season is 5.63. Of all football teams, 80.6% reported a concussion per football season. Over the past few years, a variety of organizations have invested a great amount of resources into research to better diagnose, understand, and treat the condition as well as to investigate the long-term effects of concussion and trauma to the brain. Even if the copyrighted material you use in your YouTube videos falls under Fair Use, you can still get into a lot of copyright issues and difficulties. The only entity that can determine if your use of copyrighted material falls under "Fair Use" or not is a court of law. YouTube doesn't make any judgement calls on fair use. They only give copyright holders the ability to find their material on YouTube through Content ID and determine what they want to do with the video that's using their material. Here's a few rules to help you avoid violating fair use and running into copyright problems on YouTube.
