"Optimization in Sports League Scheduling" Prof. Dries Goossens (ICORES 2017)
Title: Optimization in Sports League Scheduling Keynote Lecturer: Dries Goossens Presented on: 23/02/2017, Porto, Portugal Abstract: Millions of people, all over the world, are enthralled by sports, be it actively participating or as a fan or spectator. At the same time, almost every sports competition needs a schedule of play, stating who will play whom, when, and where. Not much more than a decade ago, most professional sports competitions were scheduled by unskilled personnel, equipped with little more than pen and paper. A good schedule is important though, because it has an effect on the fairness and outcome of the competition, public attendance, commercial interests, as well as security and the cost of policing. As league owners managed to close astonishing broadcasting deals and the financial interests in the sports industry continued to grow, the importance of a good schedule became more and more apparent.Sports scheduling is a young academic discipline: although the first substantial contributions were published in the early 80’s (e.g. De Werra, 1981), a considerable increase in sports scheduling articles appeared only in recent years, including publications in top journals in operations research. Simultaneously, several academics reached out to the sport scheduling practitioners, offering new methods to deal with the increasingly more complex problem of scheduling a league. In this talk, we attempt to illustrate the many ways in which the sports industry can benefit from operations research, particularly in sports scheduling. We discuss practical applications involving the scheduling of the Belgian Pro League football (soccer), for which we develop the official schedule since 2006. Our contract with the Belgian Pro League now involves 2 professional and 1 amateur division with interdependencies (e.g. teams from different divisions sharing a stadium or a police force) and play-offs. We present methods that have proven their value in real-life sport scheduling. We discuss fairness issues, such as the carry-over effect, as well as a discrete choice experiment we carried out in order to estimate the impact of the schedule on TV viewership and stadium attendance. Writing Skills: The Paragraph
http://www.engvid.com The paragraph is the most important unit of a well-written essay. The paragraph has a specific structure and standards that make it effective and enjoyable to read. In this writing lesson we will look at how to construct good paragraphs and improve writing with better flow and clarity. After the lesson, take the quiz: http://www.engvid.com/writing-skills-paragraph/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, welcome again to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is about the paragraph. It's a writing lesson, and I want to show people what a paragraph is and how to construct one, what to do, what not to do so you can write very clear, very tight paragraphs. This is especially important for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students but everybody has to follow the exact same rules. Now before I even begin, I must say that I'm talking mostly about academic writing or even business writing. Creative writing like novels or short stories, anything fiction, you can do anything you want. Only always remember: somebody has to read what you wrote so it has to be clear. But academic essays, for example, certain rules you have to follow; you have to be very careful about them. So let's begin. In terms of like the actual way a paragraph looks: you have to indent or skip a line. So let me just make sure you understand what an indent is. This is an indent, the first line a little bit pushed in or you can make sure you skip a line between paragraphs. But don't do both. If you skip a line, don't indent. Okay? That's the main thing. Now, that's in terms of the way it looks. In terms of content -- and this, I can't stress this enough -- very, very, very important: one central idea in one paragraph. Okay? I've seen many people, I've seen many essays where you start a paragraph talking about one thing, and then you go off on a tangent and talk about something completely unrelated. So for example: if you start a paragraph and you're talking about apples, continue to talk about apples. If you go to oranges, that's maybe okay because you're still talking about fruit. But if you start with apples, go to oranges, go to bananas, and then end up with monkeys in space there's a bit of a problem; the reader has no idea what you're talking about. One paragraph, one central idea. Now, make sure that you tell the reader what this central idea is. This is your thesis statement. Okay? It's a very general sentence. All it does is introduce the topic of the paragraph, nothing else. All the details comes after. So speaking of details, we'll talk about details in detail, but all other ideas, all the other sentences, all your sentences with the details must directly relate back to the main idea. So let's say here is your thesis statement; very general, every sentence after must relate back to that thesis statement. Okay? You can't go off to another idea. Everything must support this, must talk about the same topic. Very important. Okay? How long should your paragraph be? Technically, a paragraph could be one sentence, but in an academic essay that rarely happens. But it could be any length you want, as long as you're still on that one topic, as long as you still have things to write and things to say about that topic, say it. If you have four sentences, fine; if you have 10 sentences, also okay. Again, for IELTS, TOEFL, SAT students: four, five sentences should be your limit. You can't be too long because you don't have time and you're going to start making mistakes. So now, the details. Very important to have lots of details. Why is this topic important to your overall idea of your essay? Not only tell me what is the topic, what is the thesis statement of the paragraph, make sure you explain to me why this is important to the general idea of the essay. Give me your reasons. Now, why is it important? And then reasons, why you think what you're saying supports this idea. Examples, always use examples because giving me the reasons is okay; examples make me see exactly what you're trying to say. Very easy for me to understand what you're trying to say. Now, in terms of flow, in terms of the way the reader can approach the paragraph, you have to have bridges. What is, what do bridges mean? Basically, when you have one idea in this sentence, you must connect it to the next sentence, you must connect it to the next sentence. Every sentence must have a link to the next sentence. This creates flow, makes it much easier to read and understand, and it keeps you on the one topic. Now, key terms. If you're talking about something specific and you have to use a key term, use it as many times as you need to. Otherwise, avoid repetition. Try not to use the same word more than once in one paragraph. Okay? For example: if you're using the word "moreover" in the paragraph, don't use it, don't use "moreover" again -- use "in addition to", use "furthermore", "another", etc. Try to avoid using one word more than once, especially in the same paragraph.

Track the Field to Athletic Scholarship
Track the Field to Athletic Scholarship --- Get contents for your website or ebook - http://www.thebigarticlesbundle.com/ --- Many of the youth today are gifted with aptitudes in sports. Some excel in gymnastics, swimming, archery, while the others excel in football, golf, martial arts, track and field events, and the list goes on. Nowadays, the youths agility to fulfill their passions comes with a bonus—athletic scholarship. Athletic scholarships are specially designed for the students who excel in sports provided they will be able to acquire a good grade which is appropriate to the required scores of the organization who funded the scholarship. And of course, the talent that goes with the discipline a devoted sports person desires. If you are one of these sports person who want to acquire the said scholarship, your initial step is to look for the college institutions or universities which present the academic program that suits to your interests. However, you still have to note that educating yourself even thoughplaying sports. As you join a division, you must carefully weigh the pros and cons of attending either in smaller colleges or large institutions. You may find yourself standing out though in a smaller college. You may also join in large institutions, but chances are you might find yourself just as an alternative to a lot of other athletes. You must be aware that the sports played during college are not like playing in your school or in your local community. Before engaging here, you can consult first your trainer/coach if you're “good enough” to qualify for college sports already. The level of play is very much different and so much competition has sent what was dubbed as great players in their community to mediocrity in this level. There are two ways in presenting the athletic scholarship. First is through official applications. And the following is the scout’s recommendations who represents the colleges and who travels to assess players in various sports, looking for the players that possess star qualities. If you aim to succeed, aim to excel in your sophomore year. Maintain high grades to meet the academic requirements. It is also advisable that you compile your accomplishments for being an athlete. Consult to your coach whether which sports you will be best fitted according to your abilities. Also, be keen in selecting the school which offers an immense balance between sports and academics. Talk to a career guidance counselor; this may help you in choosing the subjects you can study so you can qualify not just in sports alone. Establish contacts among the coaches of the college where you are applying, in addition, and let them know that yoo are dedicated and eager to know more about their curriculum. Most of all, show your best advantages like showcasing both academic and athletic accomplisments. Then cite that you are looking for a scholarship. It will also be an advantage if you would initiate in submitting the applications to the college where the coach you wanted to contact works, this will emphasize your enthusiasm on the program. With all the colleges and universities that offer athletic scholarships for great athletes, your college education will never be too straining to your parent’s purse anymore. Instead, they will feel glorified of having a kid who can excel not just in sports alone, but also in academics. Now, as you go on to your application, remember that handling the application sensibly matched with discipline are the best recipes to ensure full scholarship in college.

European Journal of Sport Science - EJSS update
High ranking sport science journal @EurJSportSci European Journal of Sport Science (EJSS) | 2.69 Impact Factor | ejss.info EJSS has had its most successful year yet. In June, our Impact Factor jumped from 1.79 to 2.69! This elevated us from the 31st ranked journal (out of 82) in the Sport Sciences category to 15th (out of 81), making us one of the highest ranked multidisciplinary sport science journals in the world. This certainly reflects the increased influence that the papers published in EJSS are having on knowledge and practice in sport science. The number of papers submitted to EJSS for review also increased markedly (1300+) and led to the appointment of new Section Editors to cope with the increased demand. However, competition for space in the journal is fierce and our acceptance rate is presently just 9%, such that only the very best papers we receive are published. Last year saw us introduce the ‘Best Paper Award’ which was won, despite stiff competition, by Dr Lennart Raudsepp for his paper entitled “Bidirectional association between sedentary behaviour and depressive symptoms in adolescent girls.” Our social media presence remains very strong (with 11.7k+ Twitter followers) and we have introduced video abstracts in which authors provide visual summaries of the key points of their published papers. We invite you to submit your best work for publication!
